  4. So Bodum clearly lies about their glass being shatterproof, as a recent breakage just revealed to me. Is there a Duralex or borosilicate type glass French press? I know about the Frieling stainless steel ones, but those are mega-expensive....

  8. After making a shit-tasting "Brain Duster" (equal parts rye, red vermouth, absinthe + bitters - this drink might be ok with 4:4:1 rye:vermouth:absinthe....) I made a very lovely Applejack Rabbit, which I'm currently enjoying. I used the ratios given by David Embury, but upped the maple syrup a bit: 1.5 oz Laird's Bonded .25 oz lemon juice .25 oz orange juice .5 oz Québecois grade B maple syrup. Shaken and served up. Goooood stuff! Might change it to .5 oz lemon next and keep everything the same, but mm mm mm! PS, the Brain Duster was from Wondrich's Esquire column. It was an utter and profound dud. Really unpleasant. Anybody else tried this and liked it?
  9. It's cold again, but that has little relevance. First: classic Sazerac, with Rittenhouse 100 and Demerara syrup Second: a cube's worth of muscovado sugar, a generous shitload of Angostura bitters, 1/4 oz water - muddled into a syrup. Stirred with 2 oz Scarlet Ibis, and strained up into an OF glass - a sort of rum old fashioned served Sazerac style. This is one HELL of a rich drink! Highly recommended.
  10. Coffee first thing when I wake up, but then tea over coffee nearly every time, if I'm at home anyway. Good tea when out in America is basically impossible, so then I do enjoy a good coffee when presented to me. But as ElsieD said, my desert island hot drink would be tea. (If it wasn't obvious from my avatar)
  11. It's cold. Muscovado sugar + juice of half a lemon in a mug 4 cloves and a cinnamon stick thrown in add 2 oz Cruzan black strap and an ounce of homemade pimento dram Top with boiling water and dash with orange bitters. Mm mm mm~!

  14. Not yet, I haven't passed by the AU area in a while and I don't really need anything else from there. I mean, I could buy more rum, but that would just be irresponsible at this point....but I'm with you on thinking they're most likely to have it. By the way there's a new place on 14th Street, near Cork, that has a small but very impressive selection of stuff, lots of Haus Alpenz products. (Can't remember the name, and Ace is cheaper, I think)

  18. By the way in my experience, a Negroni (which is what Adam George described above) can be a bit heavy-feeling if just built in the glass. If you want it to be a bit lighter in texture, shaking is not out of the question
  19. by Martini you mean Martini & Rossi? Sweet or dry? If the former, DEFINITELY make a Negroni or an Americano. The first is equal parts gin, campari, and sweet vermouth, the second subs the gin for sparkling water.

  22. Book just arrived - barely cracked it open but looks very impressive, and just the sort of recipes I've been looking for. Already read the word organic about 10 times in the first few pages though, yeesh.
  23. I second that Tojiro makes a damn nice knife for the money. I have quite a few Tojiros and while they are very good, I find that I much prefer the Shun Classic line. I'm slowly replacing my Tojiros with Shuns when I find them on a good sale. what do you prefer about the Shuns?
  24. 3L is getting big, it'll take a while to recreate serious aging, methinks..
