  1. The Canadian Thanksgiving is on the second Monday in October, giving us more than two months between servings of turkey. Any closer and I'm not sure I could do it.
  2. If I can ask here: is turkey not traditional in the USA at Christmas? In Canada, our grocery stores are FULL of turkeys. Up to the rafters with turkey. Now I'm sure not everyone in Canada eats turkey, but it's been part of my life and my husband's life since we were little kids and we were raised in dissimilar households. OTOH, in Canada, Thanksgiving is not nearly as big as holiday as it is in the States. And right, we eat turkey then too. And that's it for turkey for the rest of the year. It seems to me that ham is traditional at Easter. Yes? No? But then I may be off on the wrong track completely.
  3. Good heavens! Only one mention of turkey and it's smoked. Here is the far frozen north we are extremely traditional with roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, Brussels Sprouts, and carrots. Oh, and cranberry sauce. And for dessert, Fanny Farmer's Viennese Crescents drizzled with dark chocolate of course. The traditional flaming pudding with custard is ready to go but is awaiting our Wednesday visitor.
  4. Thanks, Thanks. Don't know about Daisy sour cream. I don't think so....but someone else will know for sure. Went into a Subway today and asked about the Reuben. Only in the USA? Pity.
  5. This old lady hails from Montreal and knows what a smoked meat sandwich and a bagel should taste like. Not to mention that currently sour cream is a mere shadow of its former self. Funny how this is quickly degenerating into a rant.
  6. Thanks for the head's up, lindag. When we travel, we usually stop at Subway to get something to eat. So next time, we'll try the Reuben. Don't worry about the tuna sandwich...I wouldn't eat tuna anywhere, any time, any way.
  7. Ditto from me.
  8. My Mother also. Perhaps there is something to be said for Ontario medical care...not much...but something.... I will add that many decades ago I had our last offspring in the Jewish General in Montreal. The food was excellent and was my first introduction to Cheese Bagels...oh yummm
  9. Glad to see you back online again, my dear, and so sorry to read about your accident and hospital stay. The food...you did say it was food, didn't you?...sounds so incredibly awful. Like something you might be served in a prisoner of war camp. I sat on a regional mental health hospital board for several years and once the 'good' times had passed, the board ate hospital food also. I am delighted to say that it was just fine. Must have been some kind of mistake......lol.... Can you not arrange for some interim help to come in once a day? Here in Ontario, I think you would be entitled to that.
  10. This isn't quite 'culinary', but it has been in a place of honor in my kitchen since 1962 when my parents left Canada for warmer climes. His name is Oscar and he's Art Deco and he's been in my life since I was born and always in the kitchen.
  11. Kind of you to think about it, lindag. And yes, things are more expensive in Canada...but that's just the way it is.
  12. Do you have one? Have you tried one?
  13. Looks good. Two brands were available in Canada. One had good reviews....and the other really, really bad ones. Both looked identical. Pig in a poke like most stuff you buy now. Thanks, Lindag.
  14. My Trudeau silicone spatulas and the set of 3 rubber-bottomed stainless steel bowls I bought in a City Market in Moab, Utah. The bowls were so inexpensive, made in India and the quality is absolutely top notch. After 15 years of constant use, not one bit of rubber has come off.
  15. Hi Lindag, Thanks. I went to Amazon.ca and we don't seem to have the Salad Shooter pro available and I see that the US Amazon will not ship to Canada. Oh well...it seemed like a good idea at the time......
  16. Sorry that I didn't post the site where I found it. And what I found does not make sense. It's listed at well over $200.00 Canadian. I have no idea of what I first found or where it has gone to. Sorry. We could just skip the thing if you like. I am not paying over $200.00 as long as I have Mr. DH, The Excellent Chopper Guy.
  17. Have two glasses of wine. One on me.
  18. I have a feeling that some posted a topic like this... but I can't recall the name of the product. On my flyer, it's called a Veggie Bullet and it slices, shreds and spiralizes. 350W motor. With a blender attachment. On sale for $179.00 (This is Canada.) I don't care about spiralizing. I already have a good blender. But my hands don't work anymore and I ask my DH to slice and shred and chop vegetables and meat. And cheese. Any reports on this item?
  19. Melamine I loathe in any way shape or form. Not really sure why. My Mother-in-Law had Melamine dishes and I hated them. ???? They are thin and feel yucky. Have a set of India-made rubber bottomed stainless bowls that I love with a passion. And a set of small ceramic microwaveable bowls for microwaving...as in melting a chunk of butter or heating up the cream for mixing in. Other than that it's pretty much Pyrex dishes of all shapes and sizes. And yes they weigh a lot. And because they are 'old', (and unscratched), I don't worry about breakage. Would never buy new glass. We live in a century+plus farmhouse and do have little un-invited guests, and the occasional larger one, everything is stored in plastic and then in Rubbermaid.
  20. I would buy canned fire roasted tomatoes. But then we travel in a van.
  21. Wisdom is being dispensed here...
  22. Pretend that I am asking you that question. Of course you would support me. There are some people who have no sense of propriety...not just lacking in a sense of ownership which some might argue is less than...well...whatever they might argue it's less than....but also no filter that tells them when they are stepping over the line. We all know them...and lock up our precious things when they are around. And don't ever touch a jigsaw puzzle that I am working on.......
  23. Where is the OMG! button?
  24. Not exciting and certainly not beautiful...but they'll be scarfed up quickly. Chocolate-dipped candied orange peels.
  25. DH makes a wonderful potato soup and we freeze it. Of course, after thawing, we do add a fresh cooked diced potato. Still, the soup has a litre of half&half in it and I think that makes it freeze quite well. Frozen mashed? Nope. Dreadful.
