  1. ive been reading and looking at pictures of all the yummy yaki-imo pictures, so today i asked my helper to buy some satsumaimo from isetan in town (im from singapore) 7 of these cost $13 SGD which is about 960 yen!!!!!!! argh! I shall savour each and every one. but shit happened. i nuked the first one for 6 minutes and it turned rock hard. like i hit it against the wall and i swear it could give someone a concussion. but still, for what i paid, i ate it anyway (at risk of breaking my teeth) delish. im onto my next one. im a happy girl
  2. i tried to covert to veggie but there was one hurdle : fried chicken with skin now bacon and pork i can live without. i know many muslims and southeast asia has a large muslim population so pork is easily avoided. and for some people, treated with distaste. (but thats just the muslims. chinese love pork!) but fried chicken is just universal.
  3. durian live octopus sashimi (korean) plalaa (thai fermented fish). and on that note, the fermented crab too campari yak meat and milk whale
  4. hands down : spotted dick in thailand, squash (like pumpkin) is called faak. "lets go to the market to pick up some faaks". pupu platter
  5. any updates? many of the old blogs are no longer updated...
  6. gotta add avocados since in eating one now!
  7. nori for snacking/garnishing (and the line of uncoated deep fried thai seaweed) shirataki noodles & konnyaku what do you guys use for breading/batter? sigh chicken skin is never the same when not coated in sinful tasty carbs
  8. thats aLOT to eat in one sitting. the pictures look yummilicious. the langoustine tempura got me drooling..
  9. um yum. just lovely to read this thread. the school canteens serve everything from homecooked food to junk food herel nothing like this at all! i expect that some kids would not like eating traditional gohan and greens? nope as i kid i didnt like to eat rice with fish and vegetables. all this reminds me of the lunch chapter in the totto-chan book. something from the hills and something from the ocean, with the headmaster going round with his wife (pots in hand) to give out some chikuwa or potatoes to kids who were lacking in food items. "chew chew chew it well, everything you eat, chew it and chew it and chew it and chew it, your rice and fish and meat". im noticing lotsa milk on the menu!
  10. i just read this one today : gun powder smoke
  11. um for the ignorant, any chinese character to assist? the name you posted sounds like some dialect. or cantonese or something.

    Mos Burger

theres more than 20 outlets of MOS burger in Singapore. id love to have understood the nihon-go menu but i cant read. have a look at the singapore mos franchise in english. mos burger sg damn im hungry!!! no naan stuff here yet. but i like the ever loved ebi rice burger and the hot croquette. unlike japan its hard to find them korroke just anywhere! i love mos. i need mos. now. i want.
  13. pardon me and my ignorance i read the kanji / chinese characters as " tian mien jiang' - to mean literally sweet NOODLE sauce' as opposed to 'dou' which is bean.. i have no idea..post a picture or something? ETA: ok! i just googled and wikied to add that tenmenjan is some sorta sweet/salty MISO thing? wiki says that: Sweet noodle sauce (simplified Chinese: 甜面酱; traditional Chinese: 甜麵醬; pinyin: tiánmiànjiàng; literally "sweet noodle paste"; also known as sweet bean sauce or sweet soybean paste) is a thick, dark brown- or black-colored Chinese sauce is made from wheat flour, sugar, salt, mantou, and ground fermented yellow soybeans (that is, what is left of the soybeans after the fermentation of soybeans into soy sauce). (so its sweet bean sauce for noodles)!! edited to add again that i damn hope im referring to whatever you;re talking about..
  14. alrighty, MBK food court is 'comfortable' in the sense that it is clean, air conditioned, staff can speak simple english, signs and prices are in english and clearly stated (meaning you wont get overcharged or confused just because you're farang). also, meaning that youd clearly understand what youre being served. bangkok bob - check out his site the various offerings there can give you a hint (at a price near to street food) of what youd like or dislike. for example, you read all about pad thai or Yum woon sen or Larb etcetcetc; or youd like to sample thai-chinese food like pork trotters, beefball noodles - thats a good place to start. to get acquainted by looking at real food instead of the ones you see online. oh and by the way, half the people you see there will be locals. so fear not! well street food is virtually everywhere. buy a little when you're peckish. its better to continually graze the whole day. a moo ping (pork skewer/satay) from one stall can be so earth-shatteringly good and yet another cart has rubber pork. these carts are nomadic too so you might not find the same stand if you go back to the same spot you found that glorious dish. Big Cs are complexes akin to Tesco or Cosco. i could recommend Khaosan for backpacker places and guesthouses/ cheap hotels. or if you prefer near the siam area, Kasemsan road is at the National stadium monument, opposite MBK i think - ive stayed there twice at muanphol mansion for a really cheap rate $30? i think. there are others around check it out. otherwise i just head for novotel. again i think bangkokbob has some recommendations so check him out too. food food food. lets see. NEVER ask cab drivers as theyd bring you to some place for commission. virtually everywhere has food. even outside danceclubs just to feed inebriated drunkf**s like me (trust me BBQed thai sausage after countless beers just smell and taste so great). instead just keep your eyes open. look around. theres always a cart nearby - be it fruits, various skewered 'balls', satay, or simply sweet corn. damn. sweet corn for 10B. thats like how many cents? anyway id recommend you to stay at khao san road. its nearer to the siam area, has many farangs of your age, is pad thai heaven, mango-stickyrice galore, non gogo bars and all sortsa rubbish basically. DAMN i wanna be there : ( hell i even found a junglist scene there. where are you from anyway? oh and take the train always, at least till it stops service at midnightl.you get to see everything
  15. great tip on the reheating of sushi rice. i simply cant stand it when the rice becomes cold, grainy, crumbly and hard. that always happens to me as i tend to store my sushi in my fridge until the eating mood strikes. you can do that with nigiri i suppose, but unfortunately my favs are the makis. what lovely pictures. i love japanese supermarket takeout. oh and i tend to wash and store the packaging to store leftovers from other food. or to bring along food wheni go out so that i can dispose of them after eating instead of lugging an empty bentobox home with me
  16. more please! this is one of the threads that made me join. i read about 20 pages of every frighteningly hilarious story. any recent thanksgiving or x mas disasters?
  17. geez john. we're on totally different frequencies here! all i had in mind was the street food, sen lek - kway teow stalls, yum stands and moo ping/gai yang carts. ah and all the various chinese influenced dishes, fresh fruit, kha nom everything, fresh fruit and the grannies with the nam prik.. ive never gone 5 star fine dining in bangkok. but its now on my must do list! ive alwyas been sastisfied with good ol street food. and like 3 -4 star and family restaurants. ok mate. just do state where youd be staying and whats your budget
  18. ah yes exactly. there is food just everywhere. near the bts, outside shopping malls, near the Big Cs or just about any soi during lunch time or evening. or midnight. or in the morn. ah food is everywhere. and yes the mbk food court (6th floor) is the best to get started on the food. its cheap and tourist friendly where will you be staying?
  19. wow! i am looking forward to this newyears pictures. personally, whilst i think the food looks nice and ohh so pretty sitting in those boxes, the foods are hardly anything id eat. except for say, the nimono or kinpira gobo. i learnt from the posted links that certain foods have symbolic meanings : does everyone really eat at least a nibble of everthing? mame is great but sweetened??? kombu rolls? i just imagine alot of clashing strong flavours there..
  20. stump th e chef eccentric, funny and entertaining. the chef is given 3 random and sometimes strange ingredients to put together. 3 judges then determines if he passes or fails. combinations include : peanutbutter / cactus / potatoes; kangaroo / malt liquor / coconut. commentators are a little zany and absurd but hilarious. check it out! this page links to afew other broadcasted food clips from Food Science, Budget Health Nut, Dinner with the Band, Cocktails on the fly. Ill be watching those videos now that im done with Stump the Chef. ps if the video keeps stopping, do this. click on it for the video to load, let it play a few seconds of the introduction, the press pause. leave the thing to load while you surf other sites or come back here. resume in 5 minutes.
  21. some of my experiences : burnt rubber petrol drain water rotten apples cough syrup hay stacks im no connoisseur, i do enjoy my wines but im generally el cheapo. so you get what you pay for.
  22. ay what a lovely thread. i never thought that i would ever develop a craving for pickles. id love to run to the import aisle of the supermarket to get me a jar of dills. but alas i cant! i love the tart, salty, cold with just a hint of sweetness when i bite into a section of deli sandwiches to crunch into a slice of pickle. i used to take them outta my burgers when i ate beef as a child. but something about pickles, relish and tangy ketchup just seems irresistable to me now. im asian so things like japanese oshinko tsukemono (esp daikon, eggplant and kappa), kimchi stuff, archar and chinese mustard greens are more familiar to me what i hate though are pickled fish/seafood stuffs. vile! pickled herrings anyone? yuck.
  23. john ^ cool! wish there were more pictures, esoecially the various reactions upon biting into the food im not chickensh-t to eat unidentified stuff. well i guess the fun is in the watching eh? the yami oden sounds more scary as you can just about dump ANYTHinG including garbage and old socks into the soup. wasabi?? ekk!!!
  24. sushi - the japanese tradition the japanese tradition - how ot use chopsticks the truth about sushi ok all in good humour
