  1. Quest cereal, tang and space sticks. I think Carnation made the space sticks, I really miss those. I'm sure they tasted like cardboard but I miss them just the same.
  2. If time is not a factor could I suggest you ask your local school districts high school industrial arts departments (wood shop). Like all of them within 50 square miles. Could be advantageous for all concerned.
  3. I use 8 and 4 ounce plastic containers. The ones you get when you buy sour cream or yogurt. My dad likes those premade custard and Jello things and I have to say they are nice to use. When you don't feel like cleaning them you can just toss them cause I know I'm going to get more.
  4. I don't know why but have been told when baking bananas it's a good idea to mash them first. I don't think I've ever baked with fresh bananas, going to have to start I think.
  5. I think I was about 6 and I used to make things like muffins and banana bread out of a box. Good times.
  6. Give these guys a serious look. Actually have one of their reps come out and try and "sell" you. Don't think it will be a waste of your time.
  7. Recommending local supply stores might make for a nice pinned thread. No?
  8. Could you do use both? something like Weczeria and maybe underneath in quotes "evening meal"?
  9. I really love it when you see someone take their profession seriously while many others take it for granted. Idea sounds delicious chucklbean, hope you pull it off.
  10. In Chicago these guys come recommended : Herzog Store Fixture Co. 1034 W. Madison St. Chicago, Illinois 312.666.2600 I buy take out containers at supply stores. Kinda of hit for things like Thanks Giving leftovers.
  11. Chicago and goat. Going back to the late 60's Chicago was pretty ethnically diverse and I can remember seeing in different neighborhoods various offerings of goat meals. Today I'm guessing it's offered in just about every neighborhood and can be found well into the suburbs. I think US consumption of goat meat is sizable it's just that most of the population doesn't think about it or is too squeamish.
  12. I think we are just starting to see the impact of bio fuels. Brazil uses almost it's entire sugar production to make alcohol fuel for cars and trunks. They are also using soybeans for the same purpose meaning they are exporting less. Corn in the US used to produce fuel additives if not fuel itself is becoming more and more attractive to farmers. Meaning less production for wheat and more for corn. Power cost may be impacting dairy. I understand Electric is a significant cost in dairy. I haven't seen it here but I am told some people are paying twice what they were 3 years ago.
  13. I keep seeing more and more boar meat. Wonder if it outsells bison.
  14. I wondered why they shot part of that finale in Chicago, this makes sense now.
  15. You stand an excellent chance. I could see the retirement home thing if you want to get some skills but they might be the wrong ones. From a potential employers point of view they want some one that can sell the experience. They want someone that can sell things like $4 glasses of wine to people that would of never thought about having a glass of wine or 3 different ones with their meal. The people that sell the Appetizers and desserts get the better shifts. When you get an interview try and get a look at the menu and think about how you would sell it. They want to hear you say things like "I always try and sell an appetizer, dessert and hopefully a glass of wine." Say they have sea bass on the menu. They want to hear you describe how it was prepared. You've never eaten there and you don't know but tell them that and just make something up they will train you later. Say something like "the fillet is lightly breaded and quickly pan seared before being baked and results in savory, light almost flake like texture. It's served with steamed asparagus that is them chilled and the more I think about it the more I hope there is still some left later when I eat." Yeah it sounds hokey but it works. When they ask you how many shifts you want say three, your flexible but three would be good. Anybody that says as many as you have is really just saying they need the money. When you tell them three you are telling them you want to make money.
  16. Spike a watermelon with Vodka. IF you really want to go exotic hollow out pineapples and make some kind of punch. Line them with solo cups though on things could get sticky.
  17. How do you filter your deep frying oils in between use? I just use coffee filters but I wonder if there is a trick or tip I'm not aware of.
  18. My cooking all around has improved dramatically since I started using thermometers.
  19. Anybody else use your cell phone to keep lists? I was shopping once and the person I was pretty much following through the store kept looking at his phone. At first I laughed but then it dawned on me this makes a lot of sense.
  20. It's 9:pm and you stop checking the ring to see if you broke even for the day.
  21. When I was a kid you would wake up and there would milk at your back door. If you were lucky your mom didn't have a job outside the home and someone would come by and sell you fruits and vegetables curbside, eggs too. If your mom did work outside the home your neighbor would do it for you. I think I was about 6 years young when I figured out what money was. Every time we went shopping my mom would just say put it on our account. Everybody knew who you were and didn't even ask your name when you charged stuff. You could wheel your shopping cart home and just leave it in the alley and someone would come and get it. Often if you were on the way to the store you might even bring one back if it was there. If you saw some mother carrying shopping bags more than ten feet from her home you got in trouble if you didn't offer to carry them. Your doctor would come to your house when you were sick and if you needed a prescription he would phone it in and it would be delivered the next day or sooner if you really needed it. When you went to a grocery store most of the people working there lived within two miles of you and were paying mortgages just like your parents.
  22. Watching the finale again, Casey was exhibiting the classic signs of altitude sickness. Confusion, loss of focus, disjointed speech, and others. If you watch her in several scenes, she's clearly gasping for air and trying to control her breathing. This might be partially a case of nerves but they were at 11,000 feet and altitude sickness can come on after only a short time if you are sensitive to altitude. ← Air Force, Navy or Corps?
  23. Ya know it's amazing how many people that call themselves cooks don't know how to make a French Frie from scratch.
  24. When your suppliers give you credit.
  25. $29 for public broadcasting? Aren't we already paying for that?
