  1. i'm still trying to figure out what "sequence of events" john was charged with "reporting on."
  2. i missed this part. i retract most of my statements, as "knowing the audience" now puts this a bit more in perspective.
  3. i don't think that the issue here can be qualified on a point-by-point basis. speaking for myself, which is really the only way i can speak, it is the overall feel and message of the piece that ppl are taking exception to.
  4. i generally subsribe to the idea that you either stick with similiar elements, or go completely opposite. i usually stick with acidic wines with acidic foods. i'd be tempted to pair the potato salad with mustard vinaigrette with a light, fruity, acidic, possibly slightly chilled red. my old standby of a cabernet franc from chinon would be my initial thought (as it usually is).
  5. and when you're ready for some more of that *$^(%( just let me know mister.

    Burgundy

i'm looking to spend 80 retail. i'm also looking to not blow money, which is why i'm asking opinions of you fine people. and more than 20 on a cotes du rhone seems a bit odd. rhone offers far better at that price point. and yes, it's now 6 months after my initial query, and i have yet to make a purchase.
  7. "wise cracks". hehehe. i'd be interested to know who the target audience of this (very well written of course) article is. i think we need a poll of household income. there seems to be some feeling that a lot of us are really really wealthy, as opposed to my impression which is a lot of us choose to spend a good portion of our disposable income on dining. there is a distinct and important difference here.
  8. not really. but i prefer to use amex as often as possible for the points and these ease of management of my finances.
  9. please accept our deepest apologies. wasn't your post "OT" as well? hmmm.
  10. yup. knowing that the bottled and filtered water industry is huge in the US (at the very least), and that different bottled/filtered/city waters have unique tastes, i don't see why this would come as a surprise. i often discussions with people at least once a month arguing poland spring vs. evian.
  11. what size burger, mary?
  12. yeah!! seriously kim, no egg? that's, like, un-new jerseyan.
  13. the "breakfast" thread started getting some entries for "hangover" breakfast. it seems that those who have see the bottom of many bottles the night before tend to approach breakfast in a completely different manner than they would had they not been tipping. for me, the hangover needs orange gatorade and an egg sandwich with pork fat and cheese. any other cures out there? help me out, 'cause it's prom night (thursday) at 8.30 PM, and i'm already getting the feeling tomorrow isn't going to be a picnic.
  14. i'm not buying this parallel as i've never heard of a cough drop that works 100% of the time. to assume this person was remiss in her social responsibility because she didn't take a cough drop when she should have seems presumptuous. i've been in situations with my cell phone when i've forgot to turn it off when it might have been appropriate. the nature is: sometimes you just forget. being human, clearly, is the human race's biggest flaw. edit: races' ??
  15. las vegas has completely changed in the last 5 yrs. whereas i would have never even entertained the thought of going, i am considering it now. and i don't gamble very much.
  16. first off, the woman annoys me, and i'm not easily annoyed. her mannerisms rub me the wrong way. i watched that part of the stupid las vegas show, and thought "why the hell is anyone trying to pinch pennies in vegas?" i can actually understand NYC, or Boston, or wherever, but c'mon, if you're going to vegas, spending a few bucks on food during the day is the least of your worries.

    Dinner! 2002

it's amazing how easy it is to make a really good pho. honestly, i've never actually put the proper soup together, but i've used it as a broth with fish quite often. it's really wonderful, especially with the fresh herbs. set the fish atop the noodles on a bowl with the broth and other goodies, and you've got a complete dish. great. now i want pho, and it's 9 am.
  18. i don't know if i asked, but i guess you can bring beer, no?
  19. and if they tell you in the best Anglo-Saxon tradition to mind your own business? i suppose if i were in that situation i'd probably go ahead and mind my own fucking business. people will be people. what's the answer?
  20. readers' polls are always purely entertainment. to apply any qualitative analysis to them is nothing more than an exercise in frustration, or anger-management, depending on what your beef is.
  21. and that's just if you're dressed in such a way that is contributing to the decline as civilization as we know it.
  22. would that be the 2001/2002 "update", or an actual new 2002 guide. the NJ edition is so full of shit that i'm surprised they get away with reselling the thing without getting garbage thrown at their mansion. pathetic, at best.
  23. filtered PUR at home, poland spring on the go, pelligrino by far is my favorite sparkling, although i won't claim to have tried many. certainly beats the "vantage mandarin organge" of my youth.

    NJ MONTHLY

it is out, at least by mail. isn't *every* edition of NJ Monthly "the restaurant edition"? they are big fans of talking about restaurants it seems. which, i suppose, is why i subscribe. edit: ever, every, whatevery.
