  1. the point that the law is making is that people have the right to a smoke-free working environment, not much unlike how they have a right to a smoke free and quiet taxi ride in nyc. accountants and lawyers and mailroom guys also have that right, as the current law proves. i say that if you can smoke in a bar then make all of the buildings in NYC smoking again (up to the owners of course). then we'll come back here in 1 month and see what everyone has to say on this again.
  2. clearly this was my point.
  3. Are we our brother's keeper? Or just big brother? no one seems upset about the seatbelt law, which is in lots and lots of states. ironically, this law is designed to keep the wearer of the belt safe, and protects no one else. hmmm.
  4. actually, my "assumption" was correct, as billy d confirmed. your use of quotes is curious. and please, about this going out of business nonsense. clearly a city-wide ban wouldn't favor any specific bar or restaurant. they would all be non-smoking. unless i'm really missing something fundamental here.
  5. being someone who drives quite a bit, and studies the driving habits of those around him (for safety reasons), i can say that a large percentage of the public doesn't use *any* part of their brain while driving. therefore, cellphone usage is probably a good thing.
  6. i'd assume that most people consider it a friendly reminder, and not an edict of how to behave properly.
  7. so can i assume that you are a proponent of any action that would allow smoking in office buildings again, assuming the company thought it was OK? that's a new thread altogether.
  8. i would like to read any study that even remotely suggests this.
  9. i think it would be clear that these dishes are not made up on the spot, and that the chefs and staff have at least some level of experience in making them. whether the ingredient is giant prawn or lobster, the same dish will be made. it seems to me at least that they have a pretty damned good idea of what they are going to make going into the things.
  10. would you two stop acting like sensitive little tools. thanks.

    Bananas

make one of them banana boats out of them.
  12. foodboy states: while many different facets of this discuss have been presented here, i don't hink anyone would agree with you on this summary. and i really didn't follow your most recent follow. perhaps you could expound a bit on why a stuntman's profession should not be legal. also, please consider discussing how a restaurant is different than say, a sandwich shop, regarding smoking legislation.
  13. well, yeah, it *is* a macho thing. is there something inherently wrong with that?

    Leftover celery

and how does one pre-de-string it? i generally get that little bit in my mouth that i chew for oh, 20 minutes, until realizing that it has to be spit out. any help would be appreciated.

    Leftover celery

i thought it was pretty effing clever myself, and i'm not afraid to admit it.
  18. nick, is this where the "balthazar bread" that i eat at my favorite spot in ho-ho-kus comes from he asked with a run-on sentence?

    Corked Wine

lest you think that i'm something special or smart, or worse yet, lest anyone playing along at home is lead to believe that, a "corked" bottle is easier to spot than nina at a quiet event: it stinks like mildew.

    Corked Wine

uh, no, don't put it in your body in any way shape of form. you should cork it back up, and return it to your wine merchant. hopefully you bought it at a place that accepts returns, as most reputable stores will. although, i'll admit that i've never returned a corked bottle, out of probably hundreds i've come across. probably because they set me back only 12 dollars or so. my local wine merchant makes sure he reminds me every coupla visits that i should return anything that is off. they just pass it back to the distributor, and so on. at least, in a perfect world. but don't dump it, and recork with the same cork, to cover all of your bases.
  21. yes. does anyone have to listen? no. do they have to listen if i've been there 100 times? no. can i judge a thread by its first post? yes: this one is lame.
  22. thanks cabby. now it all makes sense. i was so confused before.

    Leftover celery

filled with cream cheese, with a piece of smoked salmon on top, sprinkle with chopped chives. tuna fish. a dash of salt and skip the snickers for a snack. put it in water in the fridge and it will last almost 2 weeks (little known ancient tommy secret). slice it thin and include it in a cucumber salad, with rice wine vinegar, a little sugar, salt, and pepper. wave it in the air, like you just don't care.
  24. may i?
