    Dinner! 2003

i don't know why, but i made filet mignon tonite, a cut that i rarely eat anymore. i think it's because i wanted to make a port reduction, and wouldn't dare put that on strip or ribeye. roasted brussel sprouts and potatoes as well.
  4. i agree with felonius. for a discussion more focused on babbo and its virtues, click here. edit: sorry, this thread seems to be about water. edit edit: upon review, i declare that "one fucked up thread". glad it's over. carry on.
  5. sam, are you speaking from experience with cast iron grates on a grill?
  6. david, a link would be fine, as long as it doesn't compromise any sort of privacy issues you have. other than that, imagestation should accept any file in jpg format. is that what they're in?
  7. don't. you're much more interesting when you don't watch the shows.
  8. rosie, david brought a blender. you should be looking forward to a nice hairy shot of me.
  9. getting back to the original topic, i really don't think it's a restaurant's concern if someone is late because they're at a board meeting or sick. that's just the way it is. these places are very busy. if you can't hack it, stand in line somewhere else. i can assure everyone that i've *rushed* to babbo on several occasions because i've been late and understood, as most people do, that they'd release the table if the party wasn't there within 15 minutes. the issue of the restaurant not responding to a letter is completely separate. although, i didn't read the contents of that particular letter, so i can't really judge.
  10. god bless larb.
  11. what's the website?
  12. any word on this place?
  13. maybe we can all just cut sam some slack this one time. i haven't seen a history of sam putting his foot in his mouth, or offending groups of people with a single comment, so i have a feeling this might be an isolated case. or at least i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. i think everyone has made their points. i don't think anyone is going to get an "i'm sorry" from sam, because i think he didn't mean it the way it sounded. i always find it distrubing when others tell people what their intent was. now whether or not he should say "i'm sorry" or "i was wrong" to help everyone get past this isn't really the point. it takes 2 to tango. if we can just get back to the other issues, this one will become a non-issue. the next time he does it, however, send him over to that heartland board. those people are like a hungry pack of wolves over there!
  14. nice job, trishct.
  15. we should also add here that people from DC are bad tippers.
  16. i learned the hard way sam: don't mess with the heartland.
  17. marcosan, in my experience, the downstairs room can have some reasonably loud music. and to sam's point, if you're not used to that at all, i can see how it might detract. personally, i think it's great. but everyone isn't is wonderful as i am.
  18. i hate pink floyd and found that babbo plays pink floyd at quite a volume during dinner at times. i just remembered that. sam's points and example of music volume seems valid to me.

    Lamb Shank

never tried that. are you searing them before braising?
  20. *i* know that. and *you* know that. but those damned midwesterns aren't buying your brand of damage control as far as i can tell. just an observation.
  21. i just don't buy that 1) NY'rs can be characterized as *anything*, even within the borders of NYC. it's a freakin melting pot, made up of people from all over the world with all types of backgrounds and divergently different thoughts on what is "appropriate" or correct. and 2) NY'rs can be characterized as "cosmopolitan". some, sure. the majority? not sure. the majority of those who go to Babbo? not buying it. the use of quotes, i think, is appropriate when quoting someone's words or word.
  22. yes yes, people who live in the metro area are certainly "cosmopolitan". and oh-so appropriate at restaurants.
  23. Interesting. Why would one use "Midwestern" when they could simply write "unmannered"? old sammy picked a really inappropriate and unfortunate way of explaining his point. and now, rather than explaining his point, he's been forced to explain why he explained his point in the way that he did. although i don't know if he's realized that yet.
  24. Dress appropriately. are jeans OK?
  25. I don't think it's ethnocentrism. It's just cultural differences. Get a feel for the place and try to fit in. Understand that things won't be the way they are for you at wherever you are from. i know a lot of NY'ers who don't act appropriately or "fit in" as well.
