  1. nuoc cham, i think, is actually a condiment mad from nam pla and vinegar and/or lime juice, among other things. and i think those acidic notes complete the picture.
  2. and on the flip side, nuoc cham smells like, well, the other side, on your fingers. What is nuoc cham? And what exactly is "the other side?" elyse, do you find that you pretty much don't understand anything?
  3. Yeah, pretty much. I often stumble over the best description of its aroma, even among relatively close friends, for fear of seeming..... crude. But it's true. salty, sweet, acidic, and fishy.
  4. my father makes me cook his steak well-done. it doesn't really bother me all that much.
  5. i don't think i've ever seen a more dorky personality than Rachel Ray. first of all, anyone who giggles at their own inane "jokes" should be tarred and feathered. the thing is, she's a cute girl, but the personality makes my stomach turn and makes her way less attractive than she should be.

  7. here's another thread about music at home/restaurants...err, or maybe it's about what's good and what's bad. i got confused halfway through.
  8. doe she hate christmas and other holidays too?
  9. i often forget how many incredible people we've had come through. thanks for the reminder!
  10. does anyone have any thoughts on how hard it would be to get 5 people seated for lunch on a sunday?
  11. hasn't rocco suggested that mamma works when she wants to work, and he really can't stop her? i don't think he's got a whip to her back.
  12. So is a barbecue in my backyard and I get better cocktails there. I am still mystified by this new trend. but no one has to clean up at the restaurant. i can see both sides. i'm hoping everyone else can as well.
  13. luckily it's just as long and bushy in the front too.
  14. when people give 2 weeks notice, there's an assumption that it's in good faith. if you start off with three people playing hookie, your offer to stay 2 more weeks would generally be dismissed. as it seems it was in this case. but your comment confuses me. are you saying that you were told to take that day off? from what we saw on the show, 3 people said "i'm not going in today. fuck them" essentially. if you're telling us that it didn't happen that way, then i'm afraid that editing is more devious than we had suspected.
  15. i'm assuming at least some of these places offer the option of having the kitchen make your steak. if that's the case, what's the big deal? i can see the draw for some of going up with a group of friends and throwing meat on a fire. afterall, it's a bonding experience. seems like it's not only like korean bbqs, but also like those mongolian grill places, where you pick all of the ingredients and have some guy throw cook it. and, of course, it's not that far from the good ol' salad bar. time will tell if they're successful, and by extension, if there's a market for them. but clearly everyone has the choice of going or not going.
  16. but that was after you all orchestrated not coming in, yes? most companies would have shown you the door at that moment as well.
  17. i refuse to watch it. i'm offended already and will continue to be offended regardless of the content.
  18. now that's not very nice. oddly enough, someone has that domain. there's nothing there, but the intention, from the one graphic, is pretty clear.
  19. i don't mind cooking for myself. i have fun at korean places and at "hot stone" places. it's the cleaning up that i detest. i haven't seen any "clean your own dishes" places however. seems that cooking is a bigger draw.
  20. if you're suggesting that some guys from UP mixed it up with you guys, i'm surprised *that* didn't air. that would be some real drama!
  21. lightly fried zucchini, chunks of parm, focaccia.
  22. i probably wouldn't. but i sure would lie.
  23. yet another conspiracy theory shot down.
  24. that call didn't depict any information being disseminated on care, status, or treatment. he was calling to find out if the guy was there, and then presumably might have asked how he was doing. at that point, perhaps they would have said "we can't give that information out over the phone." but considering that not many people know about this rule, i don't think the fact that he made the call to the hospital suggests that it was a set-up. seemed like a pretty normal thing to do as far as i can tell. and, as rachel says, it appears that they were told Lenox Hill.
