  1. plastic. i save them for the kitty litter. Stop and Shop's bags have holes in the bottom, so they don't work well for this application. Kings' bags, however, are perfect. i sometimes make the decision on where to shop based on how many bags i have left for the kitty litter. edit: boy, i can't type this morning.
  2. no cops. just a great lunch. the shrimp ceviche was oustanding. and damnit, no one makes garlic bread like those guys. "ricardo" had a nice time reminiscing of his time in Biloxi.
  3. and for future reference, the tuna in the hollowed-out cucumber would most likely be eaten with chopsticks, whereas the tuna on a cucumber slice could be passed as hors d'oeurve. can you take pics? this is exciting.
  4. if you're caucasian and ask for soy sauce, you don't have a chance. i guess if you're chinese and ask for it, they figure you're just a tourist. still, the stuff is terrible.
  5. but perhaps they treat undiscerning chinese diners the same way they do undiscerning caucasian diners. is she a discerning diner? that stuff is nasty.
  6. those packs usually contain some nasty sugar/salt water. is your friend a discerning diner? just because she's from china and all...reminds me of how people say that a restaurant was filled with chinese people, so it must be good. as if all chinese people have good taste in food.
  7. i think it's safe so say that if you don't order from the chinese menu at Hunan Cottage, you're not going to have as good an experience as if you ordered from it.
  8. the Grand Sichuan on 2nd has several dishes that have massive amounts of peppercorns. so much so that i stopped going there. i don't think they've heard about the law!
  9. i wonder if they would do it if we gave them a guarantee on numbers. and i wonder if we could give them a guarantee to begin with.
  10. ok, let's try this again: 25 hours to go...
  11. i tried this place (Hunan Cottage) for lunch not too long ago on the strength of the comments on this thread. there weren't many people there, and we were treated just as anyone else. we asked for the chinese menu as soon as we were seated, and it came out quickly. the soup dumplings were OK, but didn't compare to China 46, which is simply the benchmark. the tripe and tongue was OK. didn't have the peppercorn kick of China 46. a few other dishes were OK, although one of the dishes (i think it was pepper and salt squid), came served over some gratuitous tomato slices. that just detracted from the dish, and i could have done without the lame tomatoes. if i lived in that area, i would certainly consider this place to be a great find. but, i live much closer to C46, and C46 is just the effing bomb. in fact, i was at C46 last night with a group of friends, some of whom had never been, and they were just blown away and completely thrilled. Cecil brought some kindey out for us to snack on at the beginning of the meal. it was incredible. slightly sweet, with a nice spicy sauce. a really good dish.
  12. you can also serve mini tartares on cucumber slices. great passed around with some sparkling wine.
  13. enoki and radish sprout. for garnish basically.
  14. pretty close. and, i was kidding about the address and phone number.
  15. i don't have a recipe, but i just chop the tuna to a pleasing texture, same with scallion (green parts), mix them together and add some ponzu for salt/sweetness. put it in a round mold and plop it on top of sliced japanese cucumbers. i top it with roe, as i like the "snap, crackle and pop". i also mix sriracha with mayo, and serve on the side or drizzled over. if i want a spicier richer dish, i mix a bit with the tuna.
  16. and they're fundamentally different too. you can smoke outside, but you can't grab your waitress' ass outside. i'm pushing for that law to be repealed.
  17. Something like this? Or do you have a better recipe? oh dear. i wouldn't sear it, as i don't like cooked tuna. and i wouldn't make ponzu, but i'd buy it. that dish sounds good, but a little labor intensive for me. i make tuna tartare because it's quick and easy and light. i usually do something that turns out looking like this.
  18. is health insurance mandatory in other industries?
  19. they look cool. a little busy though. but, could you add varmint's address and phone number?
  20. that angle, i think, is usually mentioned in reference to bars. not so much restaurants.
  21. a tuna tartare dish to start. chopped with ponzu/soy/scallion. maybe some sriracha to make it spicy.
  22. and others try to dine the best they can...and they don't read the Post for suggestions.
  23. i don't think i've ever read the Post in my life. i hear they have good sports coverage though. but i don't like sports.
  24. i'm in. what are "flower oysters"? if they're raw, and served with lemon, i'll take 24. almost-raw tuna and shrimp are right up my alley. totally raw tuna is even more up my alley. steak in any form gets me going. and make sure you have some of that awesome 6 dollar red wine. i still have to get the name of that, as i forgot. damn, that was some value.
