  1. you have no idea how easy that would be for me
  2. hey that's definitely worth a try I'd say. its the same name.. man, if there's good sichuan food nearby, I'll be saved from those working late 'morale' dinners of dominos pizza.
  3. thanks for posting this BH!! I can't wait to make it at home. it was SO yummy.
  4. oh goodie I can go then!! er, that is, if that ends up being the day...
  5. Saigon City on Bell-Red is definitely still in business, as they are close to MS campus and they get a lot of business from geeks who have discovered pho. I'll confess this is the only pho I've had, wait no, that's wrong, I had a version of pho at the Fremont Noodle House before they moved & changed their name. I love and adore it, and Saigon City is one of those places that keeps me sane while working on the eastside. I made it at home once, I think the recipe was out of Saveur, and I'll be damned if the broth wasn't really close to what they serve at Saigon City. I realized that its the fish sauce that makes the broth taste the way it does. At Saigon City you get lime, jalepeno, cilantro, bean sprouts, hot sauce and hoisin, I think. I add everything but the hoisin ;-) I must try Pho Bac, because I've heard many, many people talk about how good it is. --Oh, and the small bowl of pho at Saigon City is $5, and its more than enough for me.
  6. Seattle: the oh-so-upscale top of the hill Queen Anne neighborhood is home to Targy's, a survivor from many years past. Smack dab in the middle of a bunch of beautiful restored turn of the century bungalows, it stinks of cigarette smoke and warm beer. You can always find the local drunks in there. I'm sure the neighbors would love to see it go away. I know someone who told me they ordered a glass of wine in there and it came with ice. !!
  7. I'm out of town all of Tgiving weekend :-/ so if ya'll pick the day after, I'll have to give it a miss.
  8. wow, Poor Italian has been around forever too. One of the first restaurants I ate at ~17 yrs ago when I first moved to town...
  9. Illiterati *sniff* The Hardened Artery (they went t.u. awhile back though) Hop Scotch there's gotta be more...

    Olive cake

I think I might make this this week for a soiree I'm going to thursday night. however, the substitution I'm thinking of would be pancetta instead of bacon. or does the dish really benefit from an occasional bite of smoky bacon?
  11. I think this was a re-run.. wasn't it? I didn't watch. I seem to remember him doing a seattle schtick...
  12. You're right, they're sublime. I'm really itching to do the happy hour menu.... ARrrGh! me too!!
  13. oh but schnapps ain't so bad. ever had Rumple Minze? 100 proof, it will kick your ass. And, I have a lovely peach cake recipe that uses peach schnapps and its DIVINE.
  14. cooked carrots. there's something so wrong about hot mushy carrots. I can eat them now, but they were so vile when I was young. school lunches. very traumitizing. I came up with all kinds of creative ways to NOT eat school lunches, including sticking the more 'sticky' food up under the lunch tables. (back then, teachers tried to make you eat all your food). There was nothing they gave us that was good. As I got older my mother realized I needed a packed lunch. Chicken & Noodles, that classic midwest staple. Came down with the flu same night I ate a plate of that. Stayed away from it for years. (I can eat it now).
  15. This is on my list for next week ;-) I can't wait.

    Campari

Like aspirin dissolving on your tongue.
  17. more recommendations Aurora ;-) Prager Port Works, behind Sutter Home. Small winery specializing in ports & dessert wines. They have an orange muscat right now that is really kickass! Very nice people. Also recommend Regusci, one of the "ghost" wineries, for a historically interesting stop. Its one of the only pre-prohibition wineries still standing. Was deserted for years, now renovated. Cool old stone building, they make a very nice merlot.
  18. well a few of the tony mercer islanders have tried to get rid of the Roanoke several times. Thank God & Goddess the powers that be decided each time that this place is grandfathered into the neighborhood. Who wouldn't want this place in their neighborhood?! Its probably the most historically interesting place on the island! Rumors abound: it was a speak easy during prohibition and a place of business for ladies of the night. ;-)

    Cantillon gueuze

ok, so I'm reviving an old thread. Mamster, have you gone to Bottleworks yet? They are on 45th in Wallingford, and you MUST see their selection of belgians. They have more Cantillon flavors than anywhere I believe. I adore the Vigneronne, made with muscat grapes.
  20. But I would call you "discriminating", not "picky". I would define "picky" as someone who doesn't like peas because they didn't like them when they were 7 yrs old and haven't tasted them since. Or someone who doesn't like something because they've only had it badly prepared and aren't willing to give it another chance when properly prepared. I like your "empty calorie" idea, I think the same way.
  21. but... but... did it come with fries?!? ;-)
  22. wow, southern girl, that's one hell of a review. Sounds over the top excellent. I'm jealous!!
  23. I'm hijacking this thread and starting a new one, since it was suggested. How many of you are with picky eaters? How many of you have reformed picky eaters? ;-) I was with a picky eater for 4 years. I realized in that time that this is something I really can't deal with- of course, there were other things wrong that caused the ultimate demise of the relationship, but I've realized as I've gotten older and crankier that I could not be with a picky eater for long. It would try my patience to no end. My enjoyment of food is so intregal to my enjoyment of life that if someone doesn't share that passion I feel like I'm not living life to the fullest. I had to forgo my favorite chinese restaurant for those 4 years. Early on in the relationship I drug him there probably three times before he had the guts to tell me he didn't like it. Then of course all the other food prejedices starting coming out, and the list was long :-/ cold steak- it HAD to be reheated. I never understood this one, even though the current SO is a bit weird about this one too. sauerkraut - threw tantrums if sauerkraut was mentioned. didn't like seafood - This one was huge for me. I eat more seafood than red meat or chicken. After he left I didn't eat chicken for a whole year. refused to eat any dish that had been "double-dipped" into - Also, tasting food as it cooked grossed him out immensely. Let's hear your stories... ;-)
  24. I think part of the reason he gets some local flack is consistency. Talk to any local who regularly dines out and they'll tell you a 'bad experience' story at a Tom Douglas restaurant. that being said, I'm always willing to go to one of his places. I've had some ethereal food there, and some ho-hum food there. But nothing bad, ever.
