I've gone there again (hey don't give me crap its in my neighborhood) me and notaspeckofcereal went there on v. day. he had the ribs, and they were great. not as good as kansas city... but indeed great. I'd have 'em again. And I agree on the onion rings. So much better than anywhere else. I had the chicken fried steak (with chorizo gravy!) and I thought it was yummers. We had the shrimp cocktail for a starter and while I liked it, I'll try something else next time around. Oh and we had their margaritas. The Maximo? It came on the rocks, which I found a bit disappointing, I assumed they'd be served straight up.

My 3 favorites are: 1. A really fresh, really hoppy PNW micro, or something Belgian, like a wit or a geuze. 2. Really expensive wine that I didn't have to pay for. 3. Anything Nightscotsman makes. I'm 45 and still don't like the taste of scotch.
-
I can't believe you were introduced to scotch BEFORE martinis. It seems to me that martinis should come before scotch. Scotch seems to be the drink of choice for people who have tried everything else under the sun and have finally found "the one". And the wines!! I'm envious of your drinking education ;-) mine was learned the hard way.

Hey sfroth, did you try the cassoulet at Stumbling Goat?! We need to know...
-
I've gone to this several times in the past, in fact, I think last year was the first year I didn't go. the first year I went to this it was $25 to get in, and now its $85, and I see if you want in an hour and a half before the masses you can pay $125 for that privilege! the first few years I went it was GREAT fun. Lots o' wine, lots o' food, what's not to like?! When I went with my girlfriend we ended up with guys following us out wanting to take us out for more drinks afterward like we needed more to drink after that. The last year I went it was fun, but WAY packed, like sardine type packed. So, I still say its fun, but now its $170 for two and that would buy a really nice dinner somewhere...

Been to Rover's several times. Its fantastic. I've had some amazing food there. If the 9 course scares you, just do the 5 course, and have your date get the *other* 5 course and that way you get to taste 10 dishes ;-) There might be cross over on some dishes however. I went to the first Zinzanni. It was entertaining and fun, like NSM says food was better than expected, and while I'm glad I went, I can't say its an experience I'd repeat. Its so crazily expensive now too.

Northwest Cuisine -- is Cascadia it?
malarkey replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Dining
uh, NO I ate there waaaay back when they were still aiming for the high-end tasting menu crowd. It was good, but I wasn't blown away, and it didn't trigger any "ohmygodthatsgreat" responses in me. Nor did it trigger any "I gotta come back" feelings either... :-/ -
tell me about it Girlchow. I adored Sidewalk. I was upset when MS sold it. Citysearch killed it. hell, there are still some old Fred Brack reviews up on there, that's what made me think of him. It was a great site, RIP :-( was he the one who wrote Dish??? anyone know? p.s.: now that I think about it, why isn't he on egullet?!
-
Fred Brack? Is he still around town? I thought he was one of the main strengths of Seattle Sidewalk, and he didn't migrate to Citysearch. Too bad. What's he doing now? Was he the one who wrote Dish? anybody remember that?!

I have not eaten there, but know many who have. they all said the food was sublime, even those who weren't entirely happy with the ambiance of the place. I would imagine the food is tasting portion size. I also know someone who went there and ordered all appetizers. if YOU go, let us know

great thread, brings back great.. er, or maybe not so great memories Mind Eraser - great name for a drink, and the Malt Liquor + Cold Duck?! ewwwGOD. Thunderbird, had a bad one on that. Lordy but I had bad taste in booze. Also atrocious IMO, anything mixed with Coke or Pepsi. real stinkers. oh yeah, did grape koolaid and everclear. Thankfully, I couldn't drink enough of it to matter, it was so nasty. I've gotten sick on tequila, beer, vodka, whiskey. And, I've returned to all of them happily.. but whiskey. most brown alcohols, whiskey, scotch, nope. just don't like 'em.

I've noticed this...

welcome, Eat! IMHO one should not go to Lampreia looking to 'have something not too expensive'. This is one of those places where you know up front its gonna cost and you order whatever you want or even let the chef bring out what they think is fabulous. This is a 'special occasion' type of place, a place for splurging, not being conservative. That being said, I too have heard the stories of the nazi chef and his nervous staff. Doesn't sound like a pleasant working environment!

This place opened mid-december, and I've been thinking I needed to try it, well the review made me decide I needed to sooner rather than later. I went for lunch both days this weekend ;-) Its where McCarthy & Schiering used to be, and also what was 2 doomed restaurants before it. (Best Toast and something else). Food is Tex-Mex, BBQ and southern. First lunch: I had the Louisiana Catfish Tacos with pepper slaw & borracho beans. The tacos were YUM! really good. I liked the beans, although they didn't have that pork fat flavor that colors my memories of Texas eats. I also wished they'd given me a spoon for eating the beans, as a fork doesn't get all the goodie in these. Second lunch: Pinto Bean-Ranchero Cheese Tostados, with pepper slaw & pasilla oaxaca mayo, and the waitress told me they'd put chicken on them if I wanted. I wanted. So they did. These were also great. Really tasty and at 2 tostados, the plate looked a bit lonely but it proved to be more than enough food for me. I gotta go back now for the BBQ. And, I need to go to dinner because there are things on the dinner menu that sound awfully tasty and I'm pretty sure I need them. The cocktail list is interesting too, they have a "sage drop" which is vodka and fresh sage with a twist. Somebody needs to try that and tell me what its like I'm intrigued.

Add to the list Zeek's on Hwy 2, past Monroe, but before the pass. Great stuff. Dine in your car, or eat outside on a nice day. No inside seating. At least I think so.

This is damn funny! Why is it I keep finding all these old threads I haven't read yet?! Someone brings them to the top again and then I see it. *sigh* I just don't get to read egullet nearly often enough

I was very very picky. Like s'kat, its probably easier to list what I did eat. I was one of those horrible children who wouldn't eat at dinner time but would beg my mother to make me something later. I'm sure I drove her crazy. I think I pretty much lived on pancakes back then. Oh, and oatmeal with an inch of sugar on top. And donuts, and maple bars and cinnamon rolls. Had to have hamburgers plain. Nothing but meat & bun. Loved french fries though ;-) Would eat fried baloney. Lots o' meat & potatoes. And some vegetables. I didn't eat cheese till I was in college. And not till my junior year. no kidding. Wasn't really exposed to any kind of ethnic food till I was in college too. And, it was coming into my 20's that I started to get interested in food, and started trying things I'd previously hated "hey! THIS is GOOD!" Today, I'll eat pretty much anything. I can only think of a few things that I would hesitate at: prunes & prune juice. nope. still can't do it. And liver doesn't taste right to me. Can eat paté and foie all day long but calf's liver... errrrrr.... Can eat other offal though, sweetbreads, tongue. I imagine that maguey worms and ant eggs might put me off. but I think I would at least taste. maybe. super stinky cheeses can turn me away. But I mean only the super stinky ones. But I will try them. Never encountered durian.

too funny klink. I'm still depressed that Tim's stopped making the Mountain Ridged chips. the only reasonable substitute is Wavy Lays, and they aren't as good as the Tim's. Sometimes, you just have to have them. Like with a tuna sandwich, how can you NOT have chips.

have you seen Eat Drink Man Woman? Tortilla Soup is the english language version of this film.
-
this reminds me- I was at home sick so decided it was movie time. I rented a couple of food movies I hadn't seen in awhile (tampopo and eat drink man woman) and the woman at the video store told me "ohhh if you like food movies you'll like these... and gave me "The Scent of Green Papaya" and "The Vertical Ray of the Sun". While beautiful movies, they have nothing to do with food other than a cooking scene here and there. It made me wonder what the hell that clerk was thinking of...

the thing I like about the cassoulet at Campagne is they bring it in its own little earthenware pot, and you get to break the crust yourself, (or the waiter does it for you). I got a meat grinder & sausage making attachment for my kitchen aid just so I can make garlic sausages for cassoulet ok, I'll stop obsessing about it

Duck confit takes a day to make, BUT the flavor improves after about a week so really this dish should be started a week before its to be eaten. Also, a traditional cassoulet should be baked over 2 days, not all at once. gad how I love this dish. it can be so sublime. I would say the best one I ever had was at Brie & Bordeaux, when they were first open. it even blew away Campagne's, which I adore. Sadly, I never made it back there till they had a different chef and alas, the cassoulet was never the same. I've not had the one at Cassis, or Au Bouchon, but dammit, I need to.

its interesting you say this Jinmyo. why? would two foodies in the same kitchen just end up arguing? I can see how that would be a possibility. but I would think the joy of a shared passion would outweigh the "no you can't do a hollendaise like THAT" episodes.
