  1. summer brewfest on father's day weekend Its June 14th-15th this year, always on Father's Day weekend. Some years that corresponds with Fremont, but this year, no. hell yah I'll go to the international one at SeaCenter with you. The only day I couldn't go would be Sunday the 13th. did you ever go to the one at the old Herbfarm?? that was such a lovely setting for catching a good buzz ;-) The cool thing about this one is its international The list of beer is enough to make me swoon. edit: hey, that stinking link doesn't work to bring up the bier list. You must click on The Biers once there...
  2. ya know.. isn't there one on Solstice weekend too? the replacement for the Herbfarm one? (*sob* *mourn*) This one is particularly good because its walking distance to my house. well sorta, ALL uphill. I'd be sober by the time I got home. I love beer. Surely there are lots o' beer lovers on this board. I'd be game to attend this. Its been awhile since I've been to a beerfest...
  3. yeah, this is tempting isn't it.... hmmmm
  4. if you're cookin' we'll come ;-) welcome!
  5. oh my god. I went to Cafe Besalu this morning and had one of their croissants. They are killer good. Each bite was ecstacy. (Can you tell how long its been since I've had a croissant, let alone a good one???) thanks for the research mamster!
  6. oh this is sad. I must go have breakfast there before they disappear. :-( they have hollendaise and YES I will eat it!
  7. Went to dinner last night at Harvest Vine. Here's what we had: Grilled sardines with lemon - I love fresh sardines, especially grilled. yes you can eat the bones, and my dinner compatriot bravely ate the head ;-) Piquillo peppers filled with a mousse of potatoes and salt cod - great dish, I loved this one. (piquillo peppers taste to me like pimiento peppers) Chorizo sausage and potatoes scrambled with egg - really great flavors, I loved this, the chorizo was fabulous. Soft shell crab pan-fried with a splash of sherry vinegar - another really great dish that was over in only one bite :-( pan-seared rice-blood sausage with piquillo pepper - great stuff, dark dark sausage, also with those great peppers. warm salad of partridge with spring morels and corn - this was really tasty too, how can you go wrong with morels. the partridge was all dark meat. idiazabal lana - an aged smoked sheep milk cheese - a great only semi-stinky cheese. and... flan. really excellent flan, too ;-) I wanted to lick the plate but then I'm as big on caramel as some people are on chocolate... all with a bottle of Priorato red wine. I loved it. this place has a great feel, and the chef & staff are very warm and welcoming. It is small though, and very popular, so waits can be long. we waited for ~20 minutes for a spot at the wine bar and it was only wednesday night. good for them!
  8. sockeye CRS was ~$10 a lb. at the market this past weekend. Had some grilled on an alder plank. ooo-yum.
  9. I made the Lane Cake recipe out of Saveur. (Maggie did you ever make one?) WOW it was fabulous. Cakes are not my forté, I usually have to make them a couple of times to get it right. And I felt like the cake itself was a bit too dense (too much flour?) but man oh man the frosting you could eat all by itself with a spoon. deadly good.
  10. maybe not better, but running neck and neck, would be a well made brioche.
  11. ah, diners. My favorite of favorites no longer exists :-( It was called The Chef and it was in Manhattan, Kansas. Only a counter, no booths. One could get chicken fried steak with gravy and real, ah say, REAL curly cue french fries. green beans out of a can, and a squishy parker house white bread roll. But the best part was the waitresses. they had the beehive hair, the chewing gum, the proper diner waitress clothes, and when you ordered, they turn, where they stood, and yell back at the kitchen "CHICK-EN FRY!!" god bless 'em ;-)
  12. Smokers can also be gleeful about Italy. You encounter smokers the second you step off the plane, standing waiting for your luggage, EVERYWHERE, literally. I think people are WAY too uptight about the smoking thing. I was cringing recently listening to some avid anti-smokers excitedly talking about their plans to visit Italy in the near future. I kept thinking to myself "man, you are NOT going to cope there at ALL". I can't imagine someone coming into a restaurant/bar/anywhere and saying to someone "ick you are smoking go away stop now" The italians will give you that blank look like you are an escapee from the mental ward. And then, of course, ignore you. The thing that really cracked me up was walking into these super high end fashion stores in Rome (Armani, Versace, etc) and seeing the girls behind the counter smoking away standing next to a rack of fur coats/suits/dresses worth thousands of dollars. I even heard Rick Steves, that clean cut all american travel guru say that americans need to chill out about the smoking thing, or they won't enjoy Europe at all.

    Parsnips

I like parsnips, BUT I think they need to be treated specially... I've had them roasted, which to me was only ok, they were too sweet for me - but I've added a small amount of boiled mashed parsnip to mashed potatoes and it adds a lovely flavor. ChefSpencer's puree with fish sounds fabulous. Beets on the other hand, I adore.
  14. oooh, let me know how it turns out maggie. I'm going to make the Lane Cake recipe that's in this month's Saveur this weekend. Lotsa eggs: recipe calls for 12 yolks, 8 whites (I think, this is from memory). this recipe uses the filling as the frosting also.
  15. The We Ask U Inn in the Rogue Valley, OR.
  16. I was once told that they use forks & knives in Thailand, not chopsticks. Is this true??
  17. This alone will get me there
  18. Count me in. The 30th for dinner works fine for me. How nice of you Tighe to host us. ;-) Been awhile since I sampled some Q. Last was at Barbecoa up here on QA so it will be a good comparison. And it will be international!! We are so suave!
  19. LOVE milk. have always LOVED milk. had a jersey milk cow growing up on the farm. ~4-5 inches of cream rising to the top of a gallon. As thick as sour cream on top. used to eat it straight with a spoon. YUM. Now I drink skim, love it. Cook with whole & cream. Cream in mashed taters, bien sur!
  20. me and my friend Deb went to Nell's last night for dinner. We've never been, so had no idea what to expect. Its white linen and speigelau stemware and I felt a bit chagrined to show up in jeans and a tee shirt, but hey, this IS Seattle... and they really didn't mind at all. We did the tasting menu, for $47. Its 4 courses, and we added the Saleh calamari to the list because well, we'd also never made it to Saleh al Lago either The calamari has a paprika/spicy dusting on it and it was cooked perfectly, NOT rubbery at all. It came with a parsley salad and was sprinkled with pan fried capers. Wow, great dish, really yummy. I especially liked the capers, they were just slightly crunchy and some of them had sort of exploded. really great! Then came halibut on a white bean and chard ragout. This was also a great dish- the halibut pan seared and perfectly cooked and the white bean mixture underneath it all was really tasty. next was foie gras sitting on top of a poached pear with a sort of bread salad/stuffing underneath it. I can't remember what they called this but it was savory and quite delish. The foie gras with the pear was a great combination. then there was duck confit resting on herbed potatoes and asparagus, with an asparagus 'jus'. the asparagus came in paper thin angled slices, really interesting, I've never thought about slicing asparagus this way (obviously done with a mandoline). duck confit is NEVER bad. dessert: lavender creme brulee with shortbread cookies. Creme brulee now always reminds me of the movie Amelie. (she liked breaking the crust on creme brulee...) Really great but by then we were bursting. All washed down with a couple of glasses of wine this adventure came to ~$90 each with tip. I notice they have a couple of bad reviews on Citysearch. Not sure what's going on there but our experience was fabulous.
  21. not to mention he'd be a drag in europe, where most restaurants don't even open till 8pm or later. its not petty or callous, Nerow. you are simply stating things as they are for you. I will never NEVER again be with a picky eater, and my own saga of picky-eater-boyfriend isn't nearly as painful as yours. but it was painful ;-) and he didn't last. I just can't be with someone like that. cramps my style WAY too much.
  22. it says their "partner" brewery (whatever that means) is Anderson Valley, and they are a REALLY fine brewery. Just try any of their other brews, particularly their Hop Ottin' IPA. this is funny!
  23. I had Cynar when I was in Italy. Its an artichoke flavored aperitif. God awful. At least I thought so, but then again, I don't really like limoncello either.
  24. I would LOVE to go here! I haven't been yet!! that makes me crazy!!!
