  1. @liuzhou They don't say how the customers are prepared.
  2. Regarding the question of Hot German Potato Salad being an actual German dish, yes it is. I checked in a cookbook written in Germany and it lists 4 regional variations. I mentioned this to my wife and she reminded me of when we served my MIL's recipe for HGPS to our friend Geli years ago, and Geli said it was was an authentic dish. Our friendship with her and her husband was such that she would not have said so just out of politeness.
  3. Agreed. Several years ago an acquaintance offered me some potato salad, and I declined. I found out a little while later that it was SWEET potato salad. I'm glad I declined. I would have gagged on it. My potato salad is steamed red or gold potatoes (skin on) cut smallish bite size, salt, Best Foods or homemade mayo, green onion or onion powder, finely chopped celery and chopped hard-cooked eggs. Raw red onion was part of it in the past, but my Sweetie no longer does the raw onion thing; they don't agree with her any more. Sometimes paprika in a nod to my mom's PS, which was always liked by me.
  4. It's being replaced by the Thermapen One, one second temperature readings.
  5. I thought this was a very good read.
  6. I would have preferred Lowes. Unfortunately they don't do cabinet refacing.
  7. The big box store we used was Home Depot. I strongly recommend you avoid them. In the department of surprises: Before the renovation we had a room AC unit in the kitchen window so we never "opened" it. When I went to open it a couple of weeks ago I discovered that the tile guy had randomly smeared grout between the window and window frame. I have taken care of it. The laminate flooring contractor was awesome. The crew of 4 did the complete job in 2 hours.
  8. I prefer the squeeze bottle with the cap at the bottom. In our home catsup has 2 uses, dipping sauce for our grandchildren, and topping (before baking) meatloaf. The 3 y/o grandchild would prefer to just eat the catsup, but we do require her to eat some actual food. RE ... we do require ... My mother was the wrong kind of indulgent, not expecting the kids to behave. My wonderful in-laws showed lots of love and kindness, but expected the kids to behave.
  9. A Girl and Her Pig called out to me.
  10. Regular Chili White Chili and Beans Ground Beef and Onions in White Sauce over a Baked Potato or Noodles
  11. I replaced my Thermapen with the MK4 Thermapen and gave my daughter my original Thermapen.
  12. Yup.
  13. We chose a Moen no-touch faucet for the sink. I discovered that if you pour out boiling water on the side where the faucet is, the steam turns on the faucet.
  14. The completed (except for the window blinds and valance) kitchen. Between preparing for vacation, getting ready for the flooring, and life, the peninsula became a catch-all. Looking past the peninsula and pantry to the family room. I buggered up my upper right arm/shoulder but good last month and it has only pretty much healed up this week. I couldn't support weight with it so I had to put off installing the blinds.
  15. This is a butcher knife to me. The main section of knife has a large curve and then there is tapering towards the handle. YMMV.
  16. A small bit of humor. We picked out the flooring last fall. As it was being installed this morning I started wondering what they were doing to already damaging the surface. Um, we had picked out a distressed surface. All is well.
  17. At last the flooring was installed today. Pictures tomorrow.
  18. Maybe 3 years ago I realized just what a cooking rut I was in. I did start to try to cook something new from our cookbooks, at first once a week, then it dwindled back down. Enter getting a Samsung Tablet with a Kindle reader on it. I started buying and using them again. Some cookbooks are e-versions of stuff on my shelves, but mostly they're new-to-me cookbooks. Early in my marriage I tended toward more involved preparation, but now quicker, fresh-ingredients cooking is my main interest. Michael Symon's Five in Five is a favorite of mine. While our kitchen was down for renovation, just getting food prepared was enough. The continuing home renovation often leaves me spent and not interested in cooking that night. I recently read Jacques Pepin's autobiography and when his Fast Food My Way and More Fast Fast Food My Way showed up in the Crazy Good e-Book Bargains I grabbed them. I'm reading through More right now and will make something from it very soon.
  19. The Eric Schatz bakery in Bishop, CA has been a fixture there for many decades. For reasons unknown the quality of their pastries have gone downhill over the last several years. A stop there to buy bread and pastries on our way to Twin Lakes out of Bridgeport was a required part of the trip, until the last few years when the pastry quality wasn't any better than "store-bought." Stopping on the way back is still part of the trip, and my favorite item was their Vollkorbnbrot, a small, dense whole grain bread. When I picked up a couple of loaves last week, it felt different, bigger, softer. We were in a hurry and Bishop was in full Memorial Day Weekend mode, hosting the nth year of Mule Days. We gathered what we wanted, paid, and got back on the road. Sadly, it is no longer the bread we've bought for decades. If there was declining sales for it, they make so many varieties of freshly-baked beads, discontinuing it would seem the logical choice. Whatever the reason for the change, it is off my list of must-haves. I can get "somewhat soft whole-grain bread" lots of places so I have no need to pay top dollar for bread that isn't anything special. I will surely mourn the passing of this treat for a few years. Heck, I still mourn Carl's Jr for eliminating their California Roast Beef Sandwich, and that was decades ago.
  20. Went for Fast Food My Way. I already have More Fast Food...
  21. Breakfast was grazing, lunch was reheated left-overs. Dinner tonight was the rib-eye mentioned above, and rice pilaf from a box with some added chives. Unfortunately my Sweetie's pain levels never allowed her to fish this week. I went out 3 times, got no fish, but relaxed and enjoyed myself. We're starting to pack things up. Because of COVID checkout time is 9:00 instead of the usual 11:00.
  22. Yes. I'm not sure is they were pickled or not. Mostly sweet with just a hint of heat. Lol. We never have the resort to ourselves. It's always full occupancy during the summer. I had to book this cabin last July. I was very lucky to be able to book the cabin for our August visit. I assume that there was a cancellation. The original resort had 6 cabins, another was added sometime later, and then maybe 20 years ago a three-bedroom mobile home became cabin 8. It's great for larger groups and we've stayed in it several times. The resort has its general store which includes a deli where you can get sandwiches, pizza and such. Most of the cabins are off of the lawn. This trip we're in the center one in the picture. Cabin 8 is at the far end of the lawn along with the newer RV sites. There is another site for RVs on another part of the property. You can see the near end of cabin 8 to side of the picture. Cabin 8 boasts a dishwasher which is really handy to have when you're feeding a large group. These particular Twin Lakes are world renowned for trout fishing so a tackle shop and boat rentals are a must. We're supposed to rent a boat today but I'm not sure that is going to happen. Yes, we dearly love this place. By tradition steak is our last dinner here. I've pulled out the Harris Ranch Rib-eye steaks, which were a gifts from dear friends, to start defrosting.
  23. Breakfast today was pieces of cheese and snacky stuff. We drove down to Mammoth Mountain (technically Mammoth Lakes Village) for lunch. It's about 65 miles south of the resort. All of the patches of snow that we saw along the way on Saturday, some rather large, were gone. We went to a small brew pub named Distant Brewing. I had their trip-tip sandwich. One of the toppings was piquillo peppers, which I'd never heard of but they made a nice addition. My Sweetie went for the BBQ chicken flatbread "pizza" and a freshly made soft pretzel with beer cheese, way too much food for her to order but we're used to bringing back part of her meals. I'd order the sandwich I had again, enthusiastically. My wife found the BBQ sauce too sweet, a common problem for her. To drink I chose their Night Moves, an American stout with Black Velvet Brazilian coffee and bourbon soaked vanilla beans. Sweetie had a HONEY BAKED – Amber Ale, which really means she had about a 1/3, and I had most of the rest. They were both excellent. We had planned on doing some touristy shopping, but the sugar in the BBQ sauce took her down for the count with a sugar headache. Those who have had bariatric surgery will understand. When we returned to the cabin I had a cigar and a New Belgium 1554 Dark Lager, not always available for purchase, but my hands-down go-to beer. I smoke more cigars at the lake than I do in everyday life. Since lunch was our main meal today our humble dinner was Kraft Mac'n'Cheese (the only boxed mac'n'cheese I eat) with sour cream, green onions that needed to be used up sauteed in butter, and the rest of the shredded rotisserie chicken. It's not all that photogenic but very tasty.
