  1. If you don't use it much it may start to stink. I throw in a tray of ice cubes and a quartered lemon about once a month.
  2. For exactly this reason I am going to buy a small outdoor gas grill.
  3. Why don't you ask her? It is always surprising to me what you can't find in other places. When we lived in Berlin we could have killed for a jar of chunky natural-style peanut butter.
  4. It is useful in icky rental property if you don't plan on staying long enough to paint.
  5. I don't have any prejudice for or against foams, but have to say that I find the photo upstream of an egg in spit foam very unappetizing.
  6. I do this about once a year. I just buy things as I need them.
  7. I have almost nothing in my fridge, freezer or cupboards. I cook, but I buy very tiny amounts, always with a plan in mind. Spices and condiments get tossed frequently, and typically aren't replaced until needed. The only thing I stock up on is beef consommé, which I make (and freeze) for my elderly cat.
  8. Putting it in a smoothie is very good, and very 70s.
  9. In my experience US eggs are pretty tasteless compared to the eggs I have had in Europe.

    Did it taste good?

The Crab Cooker is fun, and informal for kids.
  12. My mom used to make a banana/walnut sheet cake with Penuche frosting. Yum.
  13. As noted above, I made drastic changes to my diet last year in response to GERD. One of the most interesting things about this experience (besides undergoing significant weight loss without trying!!!!) was that since I eat very simply now - at most I use some olive oil for cooking (no butter) - and salt - I can really taste vegetables. They are much more interesting than I thought. They are kind of like my new little friends. I actually don't miss my old eating habits at all except for the alcohol, and I do have a glass of wine now and then.
  14. I was diagnosed with GERD last year. I did not want to take pills so I first cut out everything on the "usual trigger" list: alcohol, caffeine, onions, garlic, chocolate, spices, fatty meat, citrus, tomatoes, etc. I also cut out grains and dairy in case it was an intolerance issue. This left me with a very simple diet of lean meat, fruit and vegetables. I ate only small meals, chewing everything to bits. I quit eating in the evening, and got a wedge pillow. Although it wasn't my goal, on this regime I lost 25 pounds in a couple of months. This put me in extremely trim form. However, while the GERD improved, it was not totally gone. So I spent some time testing my reaction to individual foods. People use rotation diets for this - you eat a lot of something one day, then eat it again, by itself, 4-5 days later and see what happens. I was able to add back some of the things I had eliminated, like grains and dairy. I also identified a few foods that really put the hurt on me, and that I would not have suspected if I was just eating them in combination with other foods in the course of a meal. Like banana and green grapes. I also find it very helpful to cook the hell out of some vegetables, like carrots and celery, and to avoid food with hard edges, like popcorn.
  15. I have read her reviews, religiously, for years. I save them. Unfortunately, I rarely get to the restaurants in question because she primarily covers LA, and I live in Orange County. However, within my limited experience, she has been spot on.
  16. I became one of those people recently (GERD), and searched eGullet for chat on this topic. Not much here. When I want something that I can't have, I take a bite, just to get the taste, then spit it out.
  17. New oven could be the problem. Get an oven thermometer and check to see that is it calibrated correctly. Sounds like it isn't hot enough.
  18. I don't know what you ate, but I was just in Michigan, and the fresh blueberries were spectacular.
  19. I dare say that most of us don't know what fresh olive oil tastes like. I didn't until a couple of years ago, when I visited the Lassithi plateau in Crete. The olive oil I had there was totally different than anything I have had in the US, and it was not bitter at all. I don't consider anything I have had before or since anywhere in its league.
  20. Very nice review Honkman. I will only add that I personally find their sauces too sweet for my taste. Others seem not to mind.
  21. it has a lot of sugar. That would wake me up.
  22. We bought our current house from a guy who was big on the paleo diet. He was in spectacular shape, not just given that he was retirement age, but for anyone at any age. But I just about lost it when we finally met him - he was drinking Bud out of the can! Now I have this vision of cavemen doing the 'this bud's for you thing'.
  23. If you followed that sample menu for very long you would have to change your handle to something like pencil guy.
