  1. This particular author often surprises with his sensitivity, actually. I emailed him a link to this thread. I hope he gets a modicum of amusement from it.

    Yogurt Goes With...

I love yogurt with apples. But with melons? Never! Yuk!

    Cold pizza

This could be a slippery slope situation. Give in on this, and next thing you know, PJ will want his cold pizza with the crust cut off!
  6. Daniel Rogov was the only person (to this day) whose posts I read on eGullet no matter the topic. His breadth of knowledge was matched by a graciousness and civility that I can only aspire to. It was a pleasure to have crossed his path.
  7. You might change the spice. Cardamon?
  8. If you like Japanese, you might try Kappo Sui. I don't think they have a website - they hardly speak English. But here is the yelp site: click It is a hole in the wall in a mini-mall, typical for eating out in Santa Ana/Costa Mesa (when not off at fancy South Coast Plaza, which is fine too). Ask the waitress for some of the dishes listed in Japanese on the blackboard.
  9. They addressed this issue during grand rounds at the University of Chicago Medical Center a couple of months ago. See point #2 on this fact sheet. "What is the difference between celiac disease, gluten intolerance, wheat allergy and gluten sensitivity?". Bottom line is they know that some people have problems with gluten that they neither understand nor have diagnostic tests for. It is an active area of research.
  10. To each their own! I like the middle; the crust, not so much. But then, I am not big on bread in general. Does that mean I shouldn't be allowed to enjoy my pizza???? I am nominating this for one of eGullet's most silly threads of all time.
  11. Could you expand on that? Do you not like the crust? Just curious. Frankly, I start with the crust and work inward. (and, shamefully, I've dipped in Ranch before ) If I wanted to eat bread, why order a pizza?

    Mushrooms & eggs

Toast a tablespoon of cumin seed. Saute the mushrooms. Add a head of parsley, chopped, to the mushrooms and saute just to wilting. Add the cumin seed and a whisked egg or two, to bind, plus salt, pepper, etc. This comes out like a cross between a frittata and a salad.
  13. I like slate plates. Eating off them makes me feel like I am picnicking along a river in a shady forest.
  14. Larry - if you've got Cynar - try this one (had it at a heartland gathering - loved it - never made the cocktail but did make a chocolate filling from it). Smoke 'n Choke Cocktail 2 ounces smoke bourbon (four roses) ½ ounce grade B maple syrup 1 dropper cynar 3 dashes peychauds bitters orange rind Stir over ice until thoroughly chilled, strain onto large ice cube. Twist orange rind and rim glass with it. Source: Manifesto Kansas City | 1 servings Oops - realize I didn't answer the question - drank alone once that I can recall - I was taking a course in Santa Fe - studying with a bottle of wine beside me - was perfectly sober after the entire bottle of wine - stood up, fell over - still perfectly sober! Weirdest thing ever - so I guess I shouldn't drink alone. Could have been due to the altitude. Santa Fe is 7000 feet above sea level; many people find this lowers their tolerance to alcohol.

    Marks of a bad cook

^Mostly this. But I do have one generalization: people who don't enjoy cooking generally aren't much good at it. Sorry - I hate to cook, and I am really good at it. I learned how to cook as a gift to my husband, who likes to eat. Cooks Illustrated was a huge help to me in starting out - gotta love their scientific approach - but I can now improvise with the best of you. I read eGullet for tips to apply to this process. And because you are all so amusing!
  16. If someone sat down to dinner at my house and started sniffing everything before they ate it I would instinctively be totally pissed off, because I associate the active smelling of food with looking for spoilage. However, if the guest first said, hey, this smells great, let's savor it like it was wine or freshly baked bread, etc, I would probably sniff along.
  17. I eat by myself a lot when traveling for work. I love it. It is like I am inserting a bit of quality quiet time into my life, especially if I have a good book going.
  18. I lost 25 pounds over a couple of months last year using software to monitor my food intake. It was so easy. I could see from the software that I been routinely eating a few types of foods that contained huge numbers of calories, and in many cases this wasn't food that I even liked that much. So I quit eating it. I had to weigh items to know what to enter into the software. Also an eye opener. I found I was eating way more than needed to no longer be hungry. My choice of portion size had just been a habit.
  19. This happens all the time when I eat out with my husband. I order a steak, they try to serve me his salad.
  20. If the object can take the heat, use a hair dryer. Heat and peel carefully.
  21. Surely WF prices their wares differently in different markets. They will charge what they can. I move around a lot, and while I don't have specific numbers to show, I can note my behavior. In Santa Fe, NM, the local grocery stores are pretty limited with respect to the quality of their fresh meat and vegetables, so when living there I shop at WF all the time even though it is hugely more expensive than, say, the local Albertsons. In Atlanta, GA, the local grocery stores were better than in Santa Fe but only OK, and WH in my memory seemed only somewhat more expensive than, say, Publix. I shopped at both. In Orange County, CA there is stiff competition from quality grocery stores like Gelsons (which is expensive compared to Albertsons but has much better meat and veg), and the prices at WH are pretty competitive with Gelsons. I rarely go to WH there as it is out of my way, and doesn't offer that much more that I need. I just moved to Hyde Park, on the south side of Chicago, where we have a pretty nice Treasure Island. The nearest WF is a short drive away. I've been a couple of times. This WF does not seem very expensive compared to Treasure Island, and may even be less pricey than my regular (expensive) grocery store in California. Too bad I didn't keep track of actual numbers - these are just my perceptions. I notice that housing costs differ hugely in all of these places too, so perhaps they index to that.
  22. Garbage disposals do not have to be so finicky. I recently replaced my old one with a 1hp Insinkerator. It has no problems with celery, peels, etc.
