  1. Isn't that the truth? I made a comment to one of my professors in grad school ages ago that it seemed that we were living on the cusp of people 'feeling' they had the right to go through their lives with no discomfort. Apparently, that day is come. I hope these two girls remember their shameful words next time they see a wounded soldier.
  2. These girls were on morning televison (I didn't see it, just read about it) claiming they were 'scarred' by this incident. They said it three times. Really? That bar has just about hit the floor. 'Scarred', sheesh. Who hasn't asked a coworker a question about those two black guys or that asian girl or the two fat girls? Hell, Steven CALLS himself fatguy. It's not like the two girls don't already know they are fat. I guess it's just that no one else should notice. I'm with Prasantrin here.
  3. What was that? Top Chef meets Chopped?
  4. It sounds like they were hemmoraging cash. Poor management strikes again.
  5. I'm glad Carla is gone. Passion is one thing. Psychosis is another.

Time will tell. My money is still on Bimbo. They already own Sara Lee, Thomas' English Muffins and another big whose name escapes me. And they have a ton of cash to spend plus $3B in profits.

C'mon, Katie. Eating chemicals helps you build up a resistance.

I'd answer your questions in full, but this is a blog about food.

People's health is also their own business.

Most likely the latter. Twinkie Brand ™ by Bimbo, for instance.

Do the math, my friend: 92% of your salary and a job versus 0% of your salary and no job. Evidently an 8% cut in pay in order to keep ones job in a down economy is too much to ask. Hostess has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings since January. They have no liquid assets and have seen their profits decline by 30% in the last 10 years. Their back is against the wall and a refusal to show an elasticity about wages has just cost these workers their jobs and the jobs of many others. Plutocrats? Really, son. It's math and math is a harsh mistress.

I'm glad you feel confident in your prediction. I believe that Hostess Brands will be purchased by Mexican owned company Bimbo.

    Heh. Just trying to help.
  14. That does sound tasty. I am pleased to see the return of Stefan who was robbed last time around. And CJ, the world's tallest chef. Josie, not so much. She still laughs like a donkey. And the Texan with the elaborate facial hair can hit the road anytime soon. He's grouchy, bitchy and curses too much even for this crew.

Pabst is bidding to buy Hostess Brand. Take heart, Dave Ross. Hostess products abound on eBay.
  16. Well, then Darienne, enlist the neighbors kids. You can offer to pay them $1 a one pound coffee can. This works best on the under third grade set, BTW.
  17. Darienne, grandkids and other small children are excellent labor for nut-picking. My grandmother had many walnut trees and it was our job, my cousins and I, to shell them for her.
  18. Can you get invert sugar syrup in Oz? You can make it at home, if it is unavailable in shops. There are many recipes on the interwebs.
  19. No kidding. While Tim Gunn is there, he could give Padma some tips, as well. She dresses like she picked up a bunch of random items in wardrobe or out on the street from a vendor.
  20. Pies are the next cupcake craze, T. Right hand to God.
  21. If it were me doing this project, I'd do the Pillsbury crusts since they are inexpensive and you will need many of them. Who is is footing the bill? The majority of your time is going to be spent paring apples and slicing them. I've done this with my children and my husband's granddaughter and it is very time consuming since they tend to be fearful of the vegetable peelers, don't hold them properly, get tired of working, spend a lot of time giggling and talking, et cetera. You're very time-limited, so I don't think I'd even fool around with a crust that wasn't pre-made. Rolling them out will probably be challenging enough.
  22. Heh. Colicchio has practically gotten spittle-flecked a few times about that respecting the protein thing. Between him and Gayle comng unglued about over-cooked eggs, I can't take Top Chef anymore.
  23. I have half a jar of Nutella languishing in my cupboard. Do. Not. Like.
  24. I like Chopped. It's gotten a little stupid at times, but they've had some good challenges, too. The judges cooking against each other and that kind of thing. I watched the finale of Extreme Chef and was so glad I hadn't wasted more time on it. If I hear one more judge talk about honoring ingredients and respecting the protein I'll scream. They're groceries, okay? Not sacred artifacts.
  25. Ach! I watched about three minutes, maybe, of this the other day. Cringeworthy comes to mind.
