Wise guy. ;-) "No" was in answer to your question about the rest of the world forgetting how to make an omelet. I can't recall the name of the restaurant, but it is part of a hotel in Stone Harbor, NJ. It makes folded omelets and also gives you tiny complementary muffins, too. Stone Harbor is way down by Cape May, so I don't know how close that is to you.

No. There is a restaurant called Eggbert's in Bartlesville that makes folded omelets. I realize this is a bit of a drive for you, so can you special order a folded omelet?

My youngest brother and his boys love Man vs. Food. My SIL and I say "pass", but to each his own. I miss the Great Chefs series that was on about 15 years ago on PBS. It was pretty awesome to see some of the European chefs turn out great meals in a kitchen the size of a closet.

I'll agree with this. Corn on the cob has been excellent, as well.

Since I'm in landlocked Oklahoma, I'll eat my Chinese frozen shrimp and like them. We have crawdads here that are like langoustines, but they are not native to my part of the state. Crawdads have become invasive in the UK, as well, all though I am unclear as to whether they are encroaching on local fresh water crustaceans.

Let's hope she saves that for when she and the Governor are alone. Re: CABA. I've seen the commercials for this show and thought "Wtf is this guy trying to do here?" It looks even worse than the "Surreal Gourmet", I think it was about 10+ years ago. That guy traveled around in an Airstream trailor made to look like a giant toaster. Dave, never say never about bad cooking shows. There is always another one in the works.

dcarch, thanks for stating the particulars. Those were my concerns, as well. -
Farming on Rooftops - What the Future Looks Like?

Thanks. I was thinking of people who decide to start a garden with potting soil on their rooftop. It wouldn't be a problem if it were a small garden, but covering the whole roof? I'd think the city would get involved. -

Is this a safe practice structurally? I've been the victim of a collapsed roof from too much accumulated rainwater before. -
As sparrowgrass said, next time this happens, singe it over an open gas flame.

The NYT is really not a place I go to for information any longer. Carrageenan is made from seaweed. If it's pumped full of something artificial, I can see the complaint, but it isn't, so what's the problem? I'm not a fan of most organic canned foods, indeed they always seemed to be defeating the purpose of healthy eating as I see it. Eden products and Muir are not good tasting to me. They consistantly rate in the bottom in Cook's Illustrated product comparisons.

I don't recall Hathor doing Moderniste cooking. She was my guess, so I'll just wait for someone else who knows more about it to weigh in.
-
Raymond Blanc! That was his name.

I'm thinking the person riding the motorcycle is taking the picture, but with a regular camera. Look at the reflection in the sideview mirror. Tuscany? Maybe Hathor. The pictures of the gearing in the transportation picture look like the works on the Inclined Planes in Pittsburgh. There are also many Orthodox churches there and very old neighborhoods. In other words, I don't have a clue.

Does Tyler Florence yell, too? Guy Fierri has half a dozen shows featuring bar food and him either cooking it or eating it. This new show can't be much worse...well, maybe. We're all pretty much agreed that we don't watch Food Network to actually learn anything anyway. There was a show BBC a while back that featured couples with no restaurant experience who were given a venue and told to come up with a menu and a concept. Every week one of them had their restaurant closed. The host and benifactor was a French guy whose name escapes me. I loved that show. This one may have promise, as well.

It's a living, as they say. A year's free rent at a food court is a pretty good prize.

Thanks for posting this, gfweb! I need to poach some chicken breasts now. I like chicken salad with celery, pecans, dried cranberries and a whisper of mayonnaise and dijon. Tarragon? It gets overpowering to me.

I have had that sort of thing happen at Sam's Club, flourgirl. Baby greens that looked fine, but were half fresh and half rusted. At another store, I bought a number of one pound chocolate bars for baking. I got them home and they were oxidized and rancid. I took them back and got replacement packages of chocolate that were fresh and a profuse apology from the manager. I've found that as long as you are reasonable and not accusatory, there is no problem returning items. I've gotten refunds on milk that tasted "off" as well, when my local Walmart was remodeling and I think (pure speculation on my part) the milk was left out of the dairy cases for too long. After all, it's a mistake. They aren't trying to stick it to their customers or they wouldn't be in business for long. Grocery stores only have a 2-3% profit margin. I'd think they'd do their best not to lose any of it.

I would return it to the store and explain the problem to the produce manager. If you shop there regularly, then you should know who this person is. I've had to explain to produce managers about: spinach that was full of insects when I put it in the sink to wash, pineapple that looked and tested fine at the store and was spoiled when I cut it open, five pounds of potatoes that turned to mush in three days, onions that were spoiled inside, mealy apples, peaches and pears, and nuts in the shell that were full of worms. They have never given me any trouble about replacing the items and also, giving me first pick of new stuff that's in the back in the future. I always thank them personally and also call the store manager to give the produce manager an "atta boy". Praise works everytime. Edit: Obviously, you cannot return it to the store. I meant you should return to the store.

Quirky? Alton has been doing the nutty professor schtick for 20+ years. I think even he's sick of it. For me, he makes Iron Chef unwatchable. Him and his sidekick, the American Fukai-san, with the soul patch, just seem like over the hill hipsters. Iron Chef is better with the sound off.
-
I'm really starting to actively hate Alton Brown. Shave already! You look like a wino. And lose the bowties. Ima go sit by Jerry and watch Nadia G.
-
Serously. I need a translator or Babelfish or maybe turn on closed captioning. Anyway, I'm with Dave. It's unwatchable. I never learn anything and the person I want to win never does. But, I hope it's Katie's friend!

Does he still have everyone making risotto and beef wellington?

The evil Walmart (where I shop) stocks condensed milk at a very reasonable price. Carnation brand is about $1.50 a can on special around the holidays. Sometimes 2/$5 during the rest of the year.
