  1. gene kranz is my hero and good looking to boot. i'm of a certain age that grew up with the space program and remember the things he is writing about firsthand. since johnnybird is a safety engineer i really identify with the engineers who worked their butts off to solve the problems after apollo 1 and 13...
  2. OH MY GOD everyone here in the library now thinks i'm crazy i was laughing so loud. especially funny to me since i am a hawker and love turkey vultures(buzzards) who use projectile vomiting as a defense mechanism. course remember what they eat and that roadkill has to be ripe enough for them to get into it since they don't have the bill or talon strength of other birds of prey. course we call roadkill in our house t.v. dinners
  3. i really enjoyed Hardtack to Homefries, especially the chapter on the FDR's - or should i say Eleanor's - cook. my god no wonder they served the king and queen of england hotdogs at hyde park. we used to use 1 pound coffee cans growing up to do our brown bread
  4. thanks holly. will check out your site. no custard for either of us i'm afraid - john would be in a fetal position crying after an hour or so and i would be hanging out in one of those places with the crescent moon on the door. i am hoping to get my fill of bbq, though
  5. husband - the engineer - set up the itinerary based on how far he wants to drive per day. thanks all for the suggestions and keep them coming. i'm compiling a list to take with us.
  6. just finished laurie colwin's "home cooking" and have "more home cooking" on order with interlibrary loan. oh my god - what a wonderful book. i was laughing hysterically at some of the things and reading them aloud to my culinarily challenged workmates. i can't wait to get more... finished "booty food" jacqui malouf's book - eh. half realtionships, half recipes and advice about condoms read the wine pairing book that amy zavatto helped write(she's from the same small town i am and i knew her dad and mom growing up). interesting with some great interviews with rick moonen, daniel bouloud, and others. definitly a bias towards european red wines. would have liked to see more stuff with the new world wines. and finally i have been assigned "to kill a mocking bird" to read since i have successfully avoided it for 49 1/2 years. then i am to report on it on another forum.
  7. we are readying for road trip 2004 to florida and back to new jersey. last year we got some wonderful suggestions for where to eat so here we go again... if you have any ideas for places to eat in the following towns please let me know petersburg, va darien, ga copeland, fl homestead, fl st. augustine, fl wilmington, nc nags head, nc thank you, thank you, thank you - i always rely on the kindness of strangers
  8. hmmm... when we were going through a bad patch after18 years of marriage and thinking about breaking up permanently i couldn't eat. no appetite, didn't want to drink(and for anyone who knows me that says a lot - i love my champers). first went to counseling - it helped when i did start to feel a bit better i remember eating soft, creamy things - soy yoghurt, cottage cheese, butterscotch pudding, scrambled eggs. i ate a lot of scrambled eggs and toast. and worked out. i was in the gym daily and on days off i did an extra hour or so. keep positive though that is probably the hardest thing - should i make the chocolate chip cookies to send to you?
  9. johnnybird loves these just got him 20 tins at our local cvs on sale for 1.00 per tin

    Dinner! 2004

late lunch so i wasn't that hungry got some turkey medallions on "managers special"so i sauteed them in some olive oil. put them on some cooked spaghetti, made a sauce with basil, sage, oregano, capers and white wine. poured over the turkey and pasta. baked for 20 minutes. served with a salad. made for tomorrow's dinner(working till 9) at the same time baked beans with chutney and mustard and venison hot dogs.
  12. yeah what he says but i also use about 2 thick slices of bacon cut into lardons and try them out so the fat from the bacon sears the breast skin and fat and the lardons are later added back to the finished dish - or used in a salad frisee to go with the duck
  13. and is austin leslie coming north? that man can fry some chicken!!
  14. good questions which night do you prefer to eat out? if any(and i prefer to eat out for lunch) it would be sunday if i have been working till 5. i then don't have to come home and figure out what to make. i work till 9 2 days a week and till 7 one. the other three are days i'm off or finish at 3 so i have time to work on something fabulous to feed johnnybird drinking.... no real difference since the most i will have out is one drink unless john is driving. i'm too afraid of a dwi. ususally it is a beer with lunch or a glass of champagne/sprarkling wine for dessert. i do like byos but since i don't drink that much out it doesn't really affect my choices alone or with others actually i enjoy eating just by myself and last night was the first time i remember eating out with another couple. ususally if we are eating with anyone else it is john's family for some birthday celebration. how far will we drive? how far is an american grill from lake hopatcong? seriously about 30-45 minutes

  18. had lunch here today with my friend and her husband(he has cooked at cafe tamayo, the bear, etc. but is out of the business now). no reservations. got there at about 1215 - good luck finding a place to park. there are tables on two levels - probably will seat about 36 upper level, 24 on the lower. the lower level has the bar,. very bright and cheery with various votives around and jazzy, bluesy music playing. we were presented with a drink menu, specials menu and regular menu. they have mexican beers by the bottle as well as on tap, sangria, special drinks(the margaritas included that range from 9-12) and flights of tequila. the special menu had soup, three or four appetizers, three or four entrees. the main menu has about 10 starters, several salads, platos and platos gigantes. prices range from 4 for chips and salsa to 11 fro chile rellenos and several of the starters are also available during m-f lunch as entrees. platas run from buritos and huervos rancheros to flautas, enchiladas plantain rellenos and carnitas. most prices are in the 14-15 range. sides are available and their hot sauces are also for sale. there were six different bottles open on our table. i ordered a dos xx on tap, she had water and switched to club soda, he had a sprite. the water i fear may be city water because it smelled and tasted faintly of chlorine. she ordered the butternut and roasted red pepper soup that was beautifully presented with a heart pattern of mole and creme fraiche on it. i thought the seasoning was perfect though my hosts thought it was undersalted. they applied the shaker liberally - i was right. she ordered the tacos, he ordered the special rellenos which were stuffed with cubed butternut squash, mushrooms, rice and cranberries in a poblano and i got the triple enchilada mole with a small napalitos salad rather than beans and rice. she felt the beef left a greasy aftertaste but three tacos arrived stuffed with meat, queso fresco and lettuce with sides of guacamole, sour cream and jalapenos - which i promptly stole. his chile rellenos were two good sized poblanos liberally stuffed and served with a side of rice and black beans. my enchiladas were chicken and came with the house(chocolate/fruity), raspberry chipotle and spicy verde moles. they were perfect. the salad was grilled cactus tossed with apples, jicama, carrots, pepitos, and queso anjeo served over mixed greens with a tequila vinaigrette. when i go back i want to try the mexican spring rolls, chorizo and the carnitas. total was 63 with tip enjoy it woodburner
  19. there is a small contingent of army and marines here on picatinny. there is no mess here but there is The Club - now for both co and nco's which serves some of the worst catered food i have ever eaten. their restaurant service, Muldoon's, is marginally better i believe. there is also Choices which is the cafeteria offering sandwiches, grill, a pasta bar, salad bar, etc. johnnybird eats there about once every two weeks and says the soups and wraps are pretty good. then there is L'il Skeeters which opened about 2 years ago. how you can do bbq without a pit befuddles me. they do have really good homemade coleslaw and one of the cooks comes from puebla originally and makes killer tex-mex with a bit more mex snuck in. i'm still trying to get him to put menudo and cabrito on the menu
