    Dinner! 2004

stopped after work to pick up a bit of fish but my purveyors were out of flounder or sole(what i wanted). they did have the first of the shad roe but johnnybird won't eat that. picked up a piece of red snapper. went home to have a date with the husband and then make dinner. unfortunately he was being mr. electrician and didn't finish till about 6 pm(i got home at 320). finally he gave up trying to make the light in the kitchen work and just flipped the breakers so we could have heat and light in the rest of the house. luckily the stove, microwave and fridge worked. since dinner was so late(7pm) i didn't feel like eating much. made red snapper baked with white pepper, kosher salt and thyme. microwaved sweet potatoes and finished with white pepper, kosher salt, soy margarine and tipple of grade b maple syrup. yellow beans were done on the stovetop with water(to steam), some spanish olive oil to finish, white sesame seeds, kosher salt and white pepper. john has leftover fish and sweet potatoes. i ate beans and sweets. unfortunately i was out of molasses so the ginger cake will have to wait till monday when i plan on doing the piece of beef i'm corning a la fifi. why not on wednesday - i'm freaking orange - it's me husband's da's family that is green.

    Dinner! 2004

but kris - what was for dessert? thursday - at work leftover mac and cheese buffalo burger red kale cooked with onions and shallots in apple cider and cider vinegar dessert - 5 hershey dark chocolate kisses
  9. absolutely- great grandmother was orginally from rhode island and always had pie for breakfast. "apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze" my husband - the barbarian- doesn't understand or appreciate the nuances of the tiny cubes of extra sharp cheddar taken with each mouthful of flaky pastry and seasoned apples.
  10. i loved this when my favorite bass did the title role: http://www.samuelramey.com/
  11. lou- have to second tir na nog. we ate here before the csn&y concert and thoroughly enjoyed it. try the shepherd's pie but think about beer rather than wine just this once. enjoy
  12. johnnybird and i are sooooo opposite on this though like several others we do enjoy eggs for dinner. he has to get up at the "ungodly hour" for this week and next of 6am(any time before 8 is ungodly for him to rise) to be at training. his stomach won't handle much first thing so it is usually: toasted white bread with soy spread and toast dope or cranberry orange coffee cake with orange frosting or cinnamon rolls with lemon frosting this is eaten before he leaves the house. on the weekends he sleeps in and i work so i will many times make up french toast with baked turkey bacon or the divine free-range chicken breakfast sausages we just got from trader joe's and let him zap it(why did i think i didn't want a microwave - it's perfect for john to heat stuff up in). course i'm having the leftover mac and cheese or stir fried rice, especially if i know it will be a rough day at work and i won't get my 15 minute break and i'll be too hungry to answer those questions properly.
  13. try pace picante sauce... got addicted to it when we lived in east texas. much better for breakfast than salsa or tabasco
  14. I'm with you. Chocolate cake with whipped cream is even better. so is bill cosby in his classic routine "dad is great \ he gives us chocolate cake"
  15. kath congratulations on the cooking - i love mac and cheese and yours sounds both wonderfully rich but also hilarious - blorting, what a perfect description. according to another thread our love of this dish makes us rather slutty... . ok i cop to that i had forgotten about stewed tomatoes though ours were never that elaborate. stewed tomatoes served over toast in little bowls when i was growing up - blech- no wonder i forgot about them. keep up the fun - sometimes it is more fun to have others cook for you, sometimes to cook for others and for the rest of the times - eat out
  16. i went out last year for the first time - or should i say that my mentor went out with me - because i could get him onto guarded federal land and last year was a phenomenal year for all kinds of 'shrooms. joe has been gathering for 50 years and there were some HE had never seen. we came up with a few good messes and i used my portion in a sauce with filet mignon, with scrambled eggs and salmon(johnnybird has developed a taste for this), and joe taught me how to dry them. excellent words of advice - take them. especially about watching out for the turkey hunters IF you are on private land. hmmm...... after last weeks warmth and this week's snow i do think it may be time to take a look see
  17. i can't abide traditional breakfast foods - never could, doubt i ever will. when we would go back to the east end(of long island) my favorite breakfast was flounder fried in rendered baconfat, boiled potatoes and lima beans. this morning i had 98% fat free hebrew national hot dogs and scalloped potatoes made with gorgonzola and coffee
  18. even if he's a tenor??? sorry - i have a thing for men who sing lower than i do(mezzo). looking forward to the blog, k - any don'ts before you perform?

    Dinner! 2004

sounds wonderful, you can cook for me anyday, kris ... and at least your babies have great taste. john has just been diagnosed with psoriatic arthrits and is undergoing therapy that basically has killed any appetite he might have. on top of that one of the side effects of the medication is the possibility of an upper respiratory infection that he developed. i have spent the weekend cooking things that will go down easy, stimulate the appetite and provide the caloric intake and nutrition he needs. AAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH. ok - i'm better now. dinner tonight was an enriched chicken broth disguised as egg drop soup, a small plate of rice pasta with a bologenese sauce and a half a truffle. teas with lemon and honey, french toast, ensure, and a wide array of soups and broths fortified with finely minced veg and meat have made their way to the table. at least it isn't as bad as the time he had the badly infected mouth and the best pot roast i have ever made went into the blender
  20. sorry don't remember lum's. asked johnnybird who was at siena 1972-1974 when he dropped out to hitchike across the nation and ended up in erie. pa but i'm afraid he remembers little about those years - those of you of a certain age will understand i was at u of a 1978-79 for my masters degree and i remember walking down to the factory outlet for freihofers to get those rich, soft, warm, chewy cookies sorry to hear they are owned by the same entity that owns entemann's. i can't eat their cookies - the chocolate really bothers my stomach. just got an email from my friend in catskill. her husband took her to proctors for a show and she was lamenting the fact they couldn't find a decent place to eat in schenectady. any ideas for future field trips?
  21. so glad you enjoyed it.... i really wanted to try the carnitas but those enchiladas with mole are calling to me....and i really want to try the chile rellenos john is on medication and can't drink . maybe he can be the dd and we can try the flights of tequila let us know what they say about the horrid water
  22. i am reading the comics section of the paper this morning and did a spit take. stephan pastis in his strip Pearls Before Swine has explained the meaning of corndogs here: http://www.unitedmedia.com/comics/pearls/ if you are viewing any day other than sunday 7 march go to the comic for that day perhaps he's a lurker?
  23. do not sully RPI my grandfather was class of '20 and was post grad there; wrote a chaper on organic chem that was included in a text having him tutor me in chem was a bitch did my internship at albany public libray; class mate - polly farrington is a librarian at rpi - and would stop on my way back to the dorm for a bag of sliders. we had our own places to hang out - the fountain for jazz and a place we would all go to on thursday night to listen to good blues piano - sorry can't remember the name of the bar-----
  24. Now this is interesting news. The North Country has arrived. Next thing you know, we'll get a restaurant by Jean-george or mario they only put it there because all the kids at siena have nothing better - like us u of a had the white castle downtown
