  1. I have to admit I am not pleased with the recent spoiler. But, honestly, whatever. It is a television show. I am sure both finalists are doing just fine, and have opportunities they would have never dreamed of otherwise. In a perfect world, and all that.
  2. LMAO Just for fun, throw the Atkins "Diet" into the mix. You shouldn't lose weight, it is sickening for me to think about living with, and it lowers cholesterol. heh
  3. I did. I thought it well written and thoughtful. Not anti anything he had to say. I think other issues are brought out into the glaring light of day as one digests the content. Opinions are like - something else. Everyone has one.
  4. Yup, which is really too bad, because she'd been such a good sport through the whole thing. Ah well...she's a great cook...she'll live to smother many a chicken in butter. ← I think she's a great cook. Has anyone tried her mushroom soup recipe yet? I made it the other night and it's wonderful. ← I've made her proud chicken, and was pretty proud of it. Hubby does the mushroom soup in this house. But, it is pretty darn good.
  5. Agreed. But, I don't think it took a whole lot of effort to make her look desperate and bitter. Just opportunism. She is.
  6. Everything in moderation. Including moderation. Ya gotta live. Ya gotta eat.

    broiling steak.

It sounded too long for me as well, but I like a bloody steak.
  9. heh Everyone lives, they eat, and then they die. We are living longer, healthier lives, and that is just a fact. We get out of life what we put into it. That is also a fact. My Grandmother who bore 13 children, was married to a drunk and boiled the laundry once a week would no more want her life for me, than I would. But she got lots of exercise. She also had a massive stroke and died at 41. In the words of Dr. Cox from Scrubs: (In mock crying voice) But what about our duty as doctors? (Back to normal voice) Look. This is not about Mrs. Tanner's dialysis, this is about you. You're scared of death, and you can't be; you're in medicine for chrissakes. Sooner or later, you're going to realize that everything we do around here, everything is a stall. We're just trying to keep the game going, that's all. But, ultimately, it always ends up the same way.
  10. Oh, it's coming. Auditions are being held now. Word is, it will be done here in my neck of the woods. It can, and probably will, get worse. Snarky fun! Kitchens have always been the home of high drama. The restaurant industry just seems to attract that personality type.
  11. Now this is curious. I love oatmeal, because to me the whole oats have suffcient chewy texture. I draw the line at Cream Of Wheat. Grits & polenta are right out too. Funny how specific our textural sensitivities get. ← No kidding. I cannot tolerate Cream of Wheat. But give me oatmeal, grits or polenta and I am a pig for it. Interesting.
  12. ← My best friend forever died very slowly and painfully from AIDS. He didn't deserve it. I would have never kept my sanity without him in that particular place and time. He had a real talent for finding the crux of the issue, and making it funny. I also chewed him out about some of his habits. He took it well though, and gave as good as he got.
  13. Kozy Shack? For me, it was an Oreo sandwiched in potato chips. Wash, rinse, repeat. And Dr. Pepper. Lot's and lot's of Dr. Pepper. Hubby does the random UA, and wow, has it gotten expensive vs. back in the day, or what? I suppose you can make a quality or inflation argument, but a four finger bag for 40 bucks was the norm. Pisses my son off when he hears the stories about the good old days. I grew up about 45 minutes from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Those kids could grow dope.
  14. Ick. The thought of that just skeeves me out. I think of eGullet as a refuge. I will shut up now.
  15. OK, here is a practical, real world example. People with heart disease or at risk for heart disease were ordered by their doctors to consume more transfats in the form of margarine over the course of about 30 years. They were also told to use vegetable oil (crisco) instead of animal fats. Did the heart disease kill them? Did the transfat laden diet kill them? How do you determine that? Label all you like, let people make up their minds. That's all I am saying. I'll have that cheese steak wit whiz. I only get to eat a few of them over my lifetime, and wish to enjoy them in the intended form.
  16. Have you read the studies? The are correlative, not causitive. There were no "controls" concerning heredity, other dietary factors, or just plain double blinds.
  17. Thank you. I can live with that, and revel in my personal responsibility.
  18. This was really nice to read. FOH for a decade through my 20s, and made me think of all the remarkable people I worked with and passed the dreaded "preps done and first reservation is six" time with. Some are gone now. I miss them.
  19. Hey, he needs love too. Especially considering there is still a Fatwa in force. I understand that is the underlying reason that she does not discuss her husband or his whereabouts or interests. ETA: Come to think of it, that probably figures into my admiration for her. It cannot be easy loving and pledging the rest of your life to a man with a price on his head.
  20. My stepdaughter waited on Eric Clapton one evening, and was nonplussed. I would have probably gone to pieces right there on the floor!
  21. Thank you, thank you!!! ← Let me hear how it came out. I am curious.
  22. Nope, not health food. I plan to fry up my next batch in March, seriously. I am not going to do it twice in the same month. It is good. And the oil I used to chicken fry that bacon is going to be used later this week to fry - something else.
  23. I am just asking, do you know the difference in cost? They are in fact not minimal. You are not a scientist either, and everyone has the right to read and interpret what is out there and apply common sense. I always knew margarine was bad for me, but they force fed it to my father when he had a heart condition. I just thought it was yukky. Thank you for your gracious permission to think for myself. Now, what do you know about Cheez Whiz?
  24. Strange argument. If it has (or will have) been definatively shown that the current level of trans fats hidden in processed foods poses serious long term health effects for people, what is the "acceptable" price difference, in your opinion, to warrant removing them from foods? This is a hidden food additive that has invidiously crept into our food supply system. If it turns out to pose the health risks suggested it should be removed as in the asbestos example. Artificial transfats were not a part of our food before, why need they be now? For one, I think it would be a blessing to get rid of crap artificial processed baked goods that are loaded with trans fats and have half lives of a month. ←
  25. [c] IRON LAW OF eGULLET #3: when anyone bans something, it was by an elected official and it must be right and I agree with said elected official, therefore, all other opinions are not to be heard.
