  1. There is not one central place for me to do all my shopping. I do try to avoid Albertsons, but I run between several places because I know each one, even Wild Oats does not satisfy all my needs. Now several people I know will not shop anywhere but Wal-mart supercenter, Wal-mart Neighborhood Markets. That is their choice, but for me, they have extremely limited selections, there is no butcher that I can talk to, the produce folks just unload boxes. If I lived in Texas, I doubt that Central Market, no matter how good it is, could fulfill my total needs. It is just a part of living. We do not have a TJ's, and probably will not get one, We are too far from their distribution areas. I remember when Publix opended their first store in northwest Florida. They had to wait until their distribution warehouses were closer than Jacksonville. Now they are all over the panhandle of Florida. But that took them 15 years to accomplish that. And even with all the stuff that I do have locally, I do have to shop online at times.

    Ways to eat grits

    Required Reading list starts here.
  3. I found this interesting link about biscuits. They take those things seriously in Alabama, I guess. Now I might need a t-shirt. Another person to consider for a quote. Bill Neal’s Biscuits, Spoonbread, and Sweet Potato Pie (UNC Press, $19.95), edited to add note.
  4. You might read some of Eugene Walter's writings about food. He was from Mobile, Alabama.
  5. Mary and David, thank you , thank you , thank you. I think I now understand this one aspect. See, I did learn something today.
  6. I don't think I understand. I would imagine that the same censors and sanitizers that work all the other shows also work this one. Or is it being overlooked?
  7. probably sweeter would be my guess
  8. Now, ya done flung a cravn' on me. And it ain't even anywhere near Christmas.
  9. There is sooo much good advice on this board learned through experience. Chiantiglace, you have to walk the walk in order to talk the talk. Come back to us after you have been in the trenches for a year or two and tell us how it was.
  10. I agree. Sorry but I just don't get Mr. Bourdain. I have worked in many kitchens and they were not like what he describes. They were pretty normal places. And his tv shows are not all that entertaining, it is like watching, oh well, never mind.
  11. Are there any good speciality markets in charleston?
  12. Well said. I always put a cooler in the car when I am heading out to Dallas or Kansas City. THey have stuff we don't.
  13. I dine alone at least once a week. And now that my regular places know me, it is fun. I will sit either in the dining room or the bar and will refuse poor table locations. Sometimes I will take a book, depends on my mood and how into the book I am. When restaurants look down on single diners, they really do themselves a diservice. If I have a good time and a good meal when solo, then I will bring friends and/or talk up the restaurant to friends as a place to eat. If I get an attitude from the front of the house staff, I will most likely not go back. I have also been known to complain to the management. I do not understand the attitude that as a person, I have to have another person along to enjoy myself. I feel bad for people who can not be alone with themselves.
  14. I forgot to add, Kroger's is one of the largest grocery chains in the United States. They have access to lots of stuff that is not stocked at every store. If there is something you want or need, ask them to get it in for you. I use my local grocery here that way. (Not a Krogers, but a local chain) And they have found themselves adding to their local product inventory. edited to add link
  15. Something to look forward to, you will only be 94 miles from Charleston. So weekend trips to dine should be fun. I find that when I move to a new place, I try to find what is good about a place instead of focusing on what they don't have. IT makes the experience of the new place a lot more fun. Plus, look at all the golf you will get to play. Surely some of those clubs will have decent dining rooms with credentialed chefs. And you can order in what you can not find. I do and I live in a medium sized city which does not have everything.
  16. Not to mention how many out there who have never even heard of Whole Foods. They tend to not open stores in places like DeFuniak Springs, Fl or Pawhuska, Ok.
  17. You might also talk to a local potter to see if they would be interested in using your ash for glazing pots.
  18. I recommend Jancis Robinson's book How To Taste to answer your questions. I have learned more about what I am tasting from this book than any lectures I have ever been to. She explains all that mysterious stuff and why you taste what your tasting.
  19. Hi Racheld, a quick note, pm one of the moderators and they can give you detailed instructions on how to use quotes and to link to other web pages. To pm a moderator, go to the forums home page, click on the name listed under a topic then click on "send a personal Message" and fill out the info and hit send. It took me a long time to figure that out also. I still have trouble sometimes.
  20. Being from the far deep south, i have never heard of such. It must be a (southern) yankee thing. It sounds like something that was possibly developed to have a sweet using ingredients that were as inexpensive as possible.
  21. What were you thinking??!! Guess that depends ... was it described on the menu? And if so, how? I am most surprised that no one has rung a major warning bell over what they're calling jambalaya. I mean, your description sounds like it could have been a tasty dish, but it was not well prepared ... by a long shot. But it also strikes me that it bears about as much resemblence to jambalaya as wichetty grubs served over bangers and mash!!! Or, did I miss something in the discussion or description???? If so, hit me over the head with it!!!! Regards, Theabroma ← Just goes to prove the point that not all fusions work. And to me, if it ain't got rice, it ain't jambalaya. Everything else in the dish is substitutable but not the rice. Oh well. I guess I am just a stick in the mud.
