We need to focus on the positive rebuilding of New Orleans, not take pot shots at someone who has a different agenda than Brent Anderson. He is not native to New Orleans and that explains everything. I have friends who are talking about moving home for the first time in 25 years to help rebuild their hometown.
  3. All depends on where your from. Give me some good brisket anyday over pork butts. That does not mean that I will not eat good pulled pork, it is just not my first choice.

    the tuna melt

    I haven't thought about a tuna melt for more years than I care to confess. But I remember eating tuna melts at the old WT Grants lunch counter in Northside Shopping Center in Tampa. Served up with fresh cut fries. Now I am going to have to make one. Just wish I could find some egg bread to put it on like they did.

  8. My only experience with Salt Lick was awful. It was a chopped beef sandwich and it was pure fat, no flavor. Bad enough to make me not want to risk trying it again.
  9. Roberts Grove is not that far from Francis Ford Coppola's resort, Turtle Inn. When I stayed in Placencia at Christmas last year we dined often at the Turtle Inn. I prefered the food there over the food at the Grove. Native foods of Belize are not exciting, I am guessing because of the native and the british influences. THey just do not use a lot of spices and seasonings. There is a little roadside bar in Placencia that was a lot of fun after the sun went down. It was up near the Nautical Inn. A comfortable mix between locals and tourists. The taxi driver knows where it is. And if the gelato lady is still there, her product was very good during a hot afternoon. The lobster pizza at the Turtle inn, if it is on the menu, is excellent.

  11. Tobacco Road used to be a great place to go for some brews and music. Pretty funky atmosphere considering it is Miami.
  12. dallasfood.org is the blog to go to. By the way, i had dinner Saturday night at Lanny's Alta Cucina Mexicana in its new location in the Cultural District in Ft Worth. It will rival anything you can find in Dallas and beat the pants of most of them.
  13. Diann, another place to add to your list for next visit is over in Ft Worth. Lanny's Alta Cucina Mexicana in the Cultural District. I dined there Saturday night. We did not opt for the tasting menu but ordered heavily. 3 tapas, 3 soup/salad, 2 entrees, 3 desserts and the bill with out wine came to $145. Great food, really nice atmosphere, much bigger than the original location. Lanny is going to be changing his menu soon with a heavy emphasis on seafood in the style of Mexico. This is not Tex Mex, no rice and beans. In fact one of the highlights was a rissotto with nopales that came with a roasted duck breast. That was good stuff. And the watermelon sorbet with cinnamon was nice. The fois gras with peach marmalade and toasted almonds was awesome.
  14. from my personal experience, most of these jobs were preformed by low paid Blacks and Vietnamese. Some of them had worked at the same place for many years, proud of the work they did. And this included some of the high end hotels. I am sure there were probably some undocumented immigrants but they were a definite minority, unlike where I live now. Here, most of the kitchens in town run on the back of hispanics, both documented and undocumented.
  15. I was disappointed with my meal at Circe. THe menu read better than the presentation or the taste. The service was standoffish to a single diner. I have had great recommendations about Bluestem and will definitely check it out on my next trip to KC.

  19. Basically, I considered the piece not well thought out, the expert was not even from that part of the culinary world. Having read too many posts here, I am not worried about New Orleans. Some have gone on, others will stay, and there will be others who will rise to the top to take the place of those who left. Once it is made inhabitable again, life will go on. According to todays Times Picayune, the CBD is getting power back, and that is where a lot of the restaurants are. Also, phone service is returning to several parts of the city. THe hotels will be reopened to house recovery workers, that means jobs returning to the city. Like a phoenix, it will arise better than before. some parts will be very different, but some parts will retain their charm. I have memories of riding the St CHarles street car home after work late at night and smelling all those night smells in uptown. IF it was supposed to go away, it would of happened long before now. Viva la Nueva Orleans.

  23. They are staying with their property trying to protect it. They are trying to keep the local police fed so they can work under the most extreme of contitions. So they had food inthe freezer, if they do not eat it, it will be thrown out. Have you ever had to clean up after a hurricane, the stuff in the fridge goes first, then the stuff in the freezer, then the canned stuff if you have it. So they have some wine to drink, what fine dining restaurant does not have some wine in its stores. The writer of that piece on Slate wrote a very onesided piece with no comprehension of what was truly happening, she did not stop to help anyone. At least the Brennans are sharing with their neighbors, and their neighbors is the preceint house for the Quarter. So my vision is not on the same page as yours, mine comes from experience. Have you contributed to Second Harvest yet?
  24. After talking with my sister, who is still recovering from Ivan in Florida, last year, it will be a very long time before New Orleans starts to see any thing called normalcy. It took them a month to get power back on at her house and her flooding receded in one day. And there are still lots of blue roofs, if you know any roofers needing work, northwest florida is the place to be. I have a feeling the restaurant scene will be very different when the city does start reopening. I hope that not too many restaurants are able to survive the reconstruction period. And the Crescent City farmers market is devastated. The farmers can not get into the city to sell their products. Brooks, take your time and share with us what you can when you can. Take care of your family first. I have fond memories of living on Lowerline near the cemetary and living on Palmyra behind Jesuit High School. I figure that area was devastated. We had one flooding when I lived there and the water came up to our bottom step. I read on the nola.com site that all the businesses on Harrison were under water. Hopefully, when I go the the Austin City Limits festival, i will be able to run into all the friends I have not heard from yet. That music and Food festival had become our midyear Jazzfest, with a texas twist. Now I will go light a candle and say prayers for all those in southern Louisiana who need help.
  25. I think it is going to be quite a while before New Orleans is open for business again. It will definitely be a changes place.
