  1. its ok eat2much now i want to come to your house to taste your brownies!
  2. yes, but the man loves LOVES LOVES to party and party hard. all night. then he can go get poutine and better understand .qc.ca you need to realize that no reservations is a travel show, focusing on food and local culture and barlife. he is not a touring michelin inspector looking to hand out stars
  3. where is this place jul? in my day i loved rapido and montreal pool room today i am not sure where the best poutine is apdc is too heavy and soggy does globe make one with no david macmillan? what about the late night bistros express and lemeac? do they have one for low-end what about la belle province as a student this was 1 meal per day for $3
  4. no hygiene + heart attacks for less than $10 ian, another advice in montreal is to focus on the 'scene' restos in my all travels we have the best 'scene' of all the places put together especially if you factor the blankets of snow for half the year by this i mean globe, med, primadonna, sofia, cafeteria, myst, W bar / otto, wakamono, cavalli, rosalie, time, and of course la grand dame buona notte i know bourdain he loves the ladies that munch and drink and we have a lot of those here that would be fun and a good sense of 5.1.4. and our best traits also l'express and on some nites le continnental which is jamming fun
  5. wow a lot of great opinions! come on peoples dont be afraid ian for montreal i hope he gets martin picard at his best on camera also of course claude and hubert from club chasse, a true classy act david macmillan is aborn star i forget the name of the man but the crazy mushroom picker from the townships some of the great organic quebec organic farmers incl. mr daigneault the carrot man ducs de montrichard foie gras producer - that guy is a madman he cook the pate de foie and rillettes for 30 days in his farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. he will be good on camera like billybob thornton in slingblade take him to the greek heartattack breakfast place if this is still open i forget the name, what a great man! made a movie of him some years ago this is the only cure of montreal hangovers
  6. that is exactly what Virgin is doing with Virgin Wines and Virgin Vines. the most elegant communication is the one that is the simplest most effective way to communicate an idea so that the idea is understood hence the rant against flowery blah blahs that are meaningless. think of miles in sideways
  7. very good point carswell this is like osso bucco or so many other dishes with 5000 variations
  8. really? i have been almost living there since i came back to montreal and those two men never told me this! i will ask them and try it out
  9. ok but if we can't get it here PassionateChefDie then it is not a big help to us you wouldnot cook with vahlrona? it takes on a different smoky flavor make a warm chocolate torte, drink with a 1967 quinto de noval you will change your mind and your life
  10. a great anecdote bill, i have the same experience with my parents who hate to spend more than $7 per bottle of wine a lot of people here seem to think it is important to 'know wine' as in where it came from how it was made who made it was it a good vintage. this can come from learning like reading a book or this web site or similar web sites. but the best way to get this learning is to taste. the more you taste the more you 'know.' learning by reading is only theoretical. the more you taste the more you know the more you learn the more you understand tasting is still king
  11. mary if you go to the web site you will see that they use a joke to introduce the notion of body and bouquet and other wine terms to consumers it is not serious about itself, it is making a joke about wine snobs to appreciate a food pairing is beyond the scope of the market for the VV product Virgin has another product - Virgin Wines - that is targetd to slightly more advanced consumers. in this product they have more about the wines and food pairings including free wine courses to learn more if you take yourself outside of the shoes of a wine expert you will see how the concept of wine pairings can seem to be fussy and contrived to a person that is used to drinking pepsi or miller lite with his meals once he tastes the wines he learns, then he asks questions, and move on up the ladder
  12. its just marketing, like the 'for dummies' series of books. the people that buy and read them are not really dummies, of course. maybe you are being a bit harsh with the for idiots comments or just making a joke the next big challenge for the industry it is to demystify the wine experience so that it can become a daily part of the lives of people like in old world france and italy a drink like coca cola or milk in the USA the successes of yellow tail and the little penguin and two buck chuck proves that there is a huge market for it. richard branson is the king of all marketing, and he will be getting people to think of wine like beer, something casual and daily not only for special events once this phase has been completed then people can drink up the ladder to higher end wines and worry about pairings it is not a priority at this time in the wine market to get people worried about what is the right wine and the wrong wine to pair with their pizza or spaghettti or takeout thai food every night
  13. dont know how different the lobster and linguini dish at joe beef is from what you want lobster fra diavolo has a many of variations but the basic one is linguini in clam sauce with lobsters like they serve in rome call joe beef and ask if they will do it for you
  14. another good question is cant we all get a long?
  15. wow sounds great some time ago i had hot cholcalte in san francisco with a dab of marshmallow creme and hazelnut ICE CREAM was like a fat dream
  16. good news! big sale is coming on oct 28 10% or 15% or 20% off if you buy $100 or more in the store. not sure if it works for internet you will play a game to see which one you will win good luck and good drinking!
  17. Susur is not 'fusion-type' it is a particular sort of extremely precise cooking. I can tell you we have nothing like it and there is not a lot of this in north america. Anise yes is good but from recent reports has fallen sharply. It is by no means as well expense account dining with their poor wine list. i ate there last new years and i had a very disappointing meal but i do not use that as an example. what about the lost gems like les remparts and chez queuex and da emma? can someone report on those

    Nobel prize for wine

ok guys even though we love this hobby we cannot count wine in the same level of exalt as physics, chemistry, medicine, literature , world peace maybe instead a oscar or grammy for wine! althought my vote would go to mondavi
  19. we don't have anything like Susur but despite what you will read on this board we do have some amazing places you can only find here: 1. Club Chasse et Peche 2. Bronte 3. Joe Beef 4. La Chronique 5. Les Chevres my advice - blow the expense account on the wines at Club Chasse, great eclectic selection. Food at Bronte is world-class the wine list is weaker but they will be having truffles on the menu if you l ike that
  20. I appreciate your honest assessments of the 2 restaurants and will check out CC&P one my next visit. Thanks. ← you should also check out la chronique and maybe les chevres. i have never had a great meal at les chevres and never been to la chronique but many many people love these two places and put them in the league of the best we have heer
  21. maybe i am stupid carswell but - what are their points? for lambretta, once he removed his personal impressions his points were watery drinks and bad food. this is a good opinion. i made the point first that cavalli has sucky food. the martinis at cavalli are excellent and i never had any watery drinks. wine list is expensive but this is 5 a 7 not a dinner. i respet his opinion but making jabs at people because they are rich and young women that have nice cars is mean spirited. don't you think so? what is the point of identifiler? a lot of crap is going down now in montreal? we are not living in san francisco? what does this have to do with 5 a 7 carswell? please inform me. also show me any put downs i dont see any. this thread is about 5 a 7 not who is jealous of whose lifestyle and who is coolerer and who is cheesy all week
  22. i dont even know what this rant is about except more hating on other peoples lifestyles and insane comments about cheesy you dont like it, shut it and move on, you are seriously dumb if you think that only signature restos will survive think again. montreal does not survive by having great food and signature chefs - it lives and dies by the handful of people that keep the restos busy. ever notice the same faces over and over and over again in the same restos? this thread is not even about that it is about 5 a 7 and of course the usual clowns come here and start making righteous comments about their 'pure coolness' instead of other peoples 'cheesy coolness' how do you know i am not in the legal business? if you saw how much my company spends on legal bills each year you would shut up fast and run away with your prada loafers leaving skid marks. since i know for a fact that MANY female lawyers drive nice cars you should really just be quiet and munch your samosa quietly or ask your own dealer for a higher dose. lambretta made a stupid comment about harlots driving BMWs that could only be motivated by some kind of bad feelings and jealousy. if he does not like the feedback then he should not make comments. you make some broad claims about insider knowledge about the CdP and the BN Group. you think you know but do you REALLY know? from your unformed comments i can see you do not. back to the original thread, hijacker so mr. prada luxury import - where do you go 5 a 7 with your baba cool friends?
  23. hey lambretta, dont hate here we go again jealously complaining about people with money enjoying their wealth this is a sickness in montreal and on this board cavalli is a scene - see and be seen. you dont go there for the food, it is 5 a 7 after all why is the girl a harlot if she has a bmw? she cant be a lawyer at the many firms in the area? comparing dieu du ciel to cavalli as a 5 a 7 scene is the same as equating a vespa or bicycle with a bmw
