  1. Wow! thats sad to hear. I have to admit I have not been in many years but lesley's article in the local Gazette paper and other reports from my friends say it is really going up and up maybe it is a case of over-hype, this is certainly possible! what was this terrible resto where you had a bad experience?
  2. is this the varietal of potato that joel uses in his mashed potatoes with butter and truffles?
  3. hi ruth, i have gourmet archives for many years so i will go back and check august 2004 i am now back living in montreal but still travel to nyc, hudson valley, and finger lakes a lot this is still the most romantic city in north america but i am sad to say that except for a few restos the food does not do that much for me any more not to say the food has gotten worse, on the contrary much better than 10 years ago, probably now at its peak ever so i get my fix when i travel for things like ethnic foods (japanese, turkish, indian, korean, vietnamese, cambodian we do not do good here!) but french and italian we are very very good. no good sushi here as well. however, the city is too small of a market to support many many great restos but that atmosphere and bon vivant attitude makes this less important. we like to eat and drink and party here, it is the culture also, according to our local expert Lesley Chestermint, the resto scene in QUEBEC CITY (our capitol) is even better than montreal. i can believe this since there is a lot of old and new money now there and if you think montreal is a beautiful old city, quebec is even better, like nowhere else on this continent. when you come here again please post a note, we would love to share with you our best local secret treasures!
  4. lawrence godbout is good with local farmers
  5. ok but what about the grilled cheese i never did make it to the marche JTM PLEASE is there more grilled cheese>
  6. hello Ruth i love your book and magazines i would like to know which was the best meal you had ever this is without any qualifications i.e. not due to the company but only for the food and wines and service!!!! which resto ,which food, which city and country etc.! i.e. the greatest meal you ever had thanks in advances
  7. a great question! i would ask the same of ruth did you eat at ORTOLAN or AOC or PATINA or SASABUNE to me these are the best restos of LA
  8. can you please post a link to the debunking riedel article also for the lobster one when did it get published? i get gourmet magazine but maybe here in canada it takes a long time so i did not yet get the new issue?! ruth, have to say i loved you articles when i lived in LA and almost at the same time as you i moved to new york from my native montreal all in all i think that the new york reviews you really did a great job to light the food scene
  9. very true my friend but it comes down to to the issue of cost fish from fulton is expensive but less so now thanks to our roring dollar but still i dont find great sushi in montreal. my favorite is sushi zenya and also i like jun-yi but many years ago tri was the best and the brightest. also innovator with the privat importerd saki and cold sakes which was a novelty 10 years ago still i believe we have the best lobster and shellfish in canada and who can forget the seafood form the magdalene iles! things i am searching for in montreal: best yakitori best gyoza best omakase

    WS top 100

he is a passive investor and does not promote the wines of this chateau if you have a chance ever to taste one, take ajump amazing wines note that bob was the first to promote the crazy clos des papes 2003 for me the wine of the year and the vintage
  11. forgot to mention that tri probaly doess the best he can with the bad fish that we get here in montreal what is the story with that? we are in canada, the east half of the country is only engaged with fishing!!!!
  12. how long ago? i ordered food from them on the weekend and really the quality of some of the stuff is still great (maki) but the rest is now reduced to catfood (sashimi - slimy and tasteless), beef salad filet minon (more like dried beef, over spices), gyoza (not perfect and crisp like before, soggy but still too small to be good gyoza like before) i found it sad tri is a nice man but really he is not a GREAT sushi shef but for sure the best ever in montreal
  13. I work at the Intercontinental hotel in Toronto. We had the food and wine show next door at the convention centre. www.azurerestaurant.ca ← phew! i tought i missed a wine show!!!!! anyways the giant chef was on my plane FROM toronto to montreal so he must have come here for a reason maybe to eat at garcon, our #1 resto?
  14. Really? Tell us more. Would there were a local Asian eatery with a wine list as interesting as, say, The Slanted Door's. ← this is more funny than your joke about the borsao i dont think there is even a resto in asia with a better food or wine than slanted door, i find it the best i have been to i dont feel tht we will see the genious of their loire cab franc pairing with their ribs anytime soon here
  15. why not get a group together and share the bag for $60 3kg is a lot but this price is much cheap than retail
  16. Borsao. ← are you sure? i was saving my case for the the guy that gets you in my fan club
  17. yes! this man http://www.foodtv.ca/chefathome/
  18. also i will mention that i saw the tall giant chef from Nova Scotia who have a show on the food network with his wife at the airport in toronto yesterday coming to montreal
  19. do you guys consider the extra costs of having a retails store? this of course will add to the cost of buying locale. i find it best to support the locale retailers i agree that the difference carswell compares is too great. did u try to negotiate? my policy is always negotiate and i find this always works if you are ready to buy on the spot also it is a good idea to tell the people at the store that you plan to buy on the internet, like that they can decide to give you a discount if possible
  20. can i make a complain? why is it nobody post the event before it starts? it seems that i miss all the good events i love chocolate 10 buck is not a lot of a taste of many chocos campo that is a great story remind me of the one with the peanuts from the marche jean talon. we have many funny people here in quebec
  21. yes i know jfl i was making a joke i think the whole budget for garcon is the fee for a star with 2 macarons sad to say but the woman is a bit crazy if she thinks that a 2 macaron chef is reading the gazette newspaper looking to find a job, maybe this is just for pr for her but it only makes the joke bigger and bigger anyway she will have 1 year to make her money and maybe who knows she will make a good resto as well i will say that on air canada a lot of the people were reading en route and for sure planning to eat in the top 10 the biggest thing that was robbed was toronto. i love my home of montreal but the truth is that many great food is being made these days in toronto the 'scene' is reminding me of nyc or LA where each week a newer place opens and the placeis buzzing with good food and hopes lesley a good idea for you is to do a REAL TOP 10 for the gazette with the list of best restos in montreal and quebec.
  22. i go to the west coast for a few days and i miss all the actions on my favorite topic! of course this award is a joke. a big joke on the readers of en route. as i flew on air canada this week everyone is talking, talking about where to eat. i myself was interested so i checked our Rosemede. not sure if it was so busy before but it was full now i had to ask a favor of the concierge for a table. and all this in tiny vicotoria! patricia at garcon is dreaming if she thinks that a 2 macaron chef will come to her disney resto. maybe pierre gagnaire is bored and wants to come to winter wonderland to cook steak frites for her CCeP was robbed yes but it has a decidated following that will keep the success of the resto if you think claude is not hurt then you must believe that it is ok to be the best and not be recognizesd
  23. hello carswell. i am happy to hear about a new byob. what is the best wines to drink with this kinds of food? a big rhone or more like gewurtz with asian foods
  24. the e-gods have spoken and the thread is revived! i will have lunch tomorrow at the one in chinatown and will post back here this is a most excite development i hope the food is great i love the kazakh food but this sounds better
