  1. doc, very good points however i took a problem with the term globalisation used like it is in mondovino it is not detrimental for the world to be globalized; we learn more as we know each other more i think a better term is 'generic' wines another thing is i have never tasted a wine from chile and mistaken it for america, or australia mistaken for anything or france or germany or anywhere terrior cannot be masked by tricks in the lab it will always taste difference. even the best masquerade will show the taste of the climate and the earth from where it came. would love to see some examples of wines from italy or france that taste like those from america or australia to the point where you are confused from where it came
  2. thank you brad for your good words please tell us more about these old high alcohol monsters today i entertained myself by letting my employees taste some delicious california grapes i bought at the market and informing them that the sweet and tasty little grapes were thanks to the global warming as told by our local wine expert
  3. oh yes? have been buying my butter from lantancia style europeene but it is not that great would be nice to have french butter
  4. carswell to release the steam valve a bit, maybe the point of grandpa mal's article was that alcohol might be a problem more than a virtue but he does not make this point, instead he blames it on mother nature that is why i say it is a rant sincethe base claim is wild of course as i can see that you know the real deals, wine is in the hands of the winemaker anyways i too would wish that the days were like before with 11-12% alcohol wines so i could have some with lunch anyway lets be real: we cannot say that global warming causes wines to be high alcohol. it is the winemakers and maybe the consumers that like this fashion.
  5. john, also reading the article i was wondering what he is getting at except a rant about some very strange beliefes with not a lot of backup carswell did a good recap but the tone of the original article is clearly a pointless ramp starting with the thesis statement of his article is that GLOBAL WARMING is the biggest factor in high alcohol wines. there are some sub factors he claims such as increased irrigation (i guess due to the drought brought on by global warming we have to use irrigiation now) and monster yeasts to replace the "killed off" wild yeasts but these are all painted as secondary effects of the primary evil that is the climate change there is no real point to the article i just thought his wild statement was reckless and laughable so i thought to make the post here to see the comments like someone else posted i guess that now all of fruit in the supermarket will taste like candied fruit thanks be to all the higher sugar!!

    Cigars and Wine

ouch maybe we can discuss the pleasures of smoking Marlboro reds and cabernet as i enjoy in my youth
  7. i think mary is getting to the point there is some popular reason for the high alcohol wines, parkair or otherwise certainly it is not the fault of mother nature!
  8. raxelita, yes i have. some were OK but a lot were unbalanced. this is the story of the vintage, mother nature makes the vines the man makes the wines. but this is not the point. this man in the newspaper here is making the statement that there is a correlation between global warming and high alcohol wines! i found this a really wild statement for a journalist the more ripe a wine is for sure the higher the brix the higher the potential alcohol if fermentation is completed. he makes the point that for fermentation to be completed special yeasts need to be used (again not true for so many wines either by AOC or by vintner choose to use vineyard yeasts). this kind of reckless journalism it makes me crazy!
  9. en garde Carswell! for this hallowen i think you will dress as superman, protector of truth and justice for egullet and for montreal i do not know about the west island or gazette only it seems that it is sold everywhere. maybe the statistics are available but it is not importnat - for this board it is english and i think we deserve better. lesley i enjoy your reviews even if i dont agree and i always learn something new like today with quebec city. i will go soon. the other restos like the bellydancing one today i dont think it is my style. can i propose something? let us all make peace with a glass of wine and some notes of great finds at the SAQ especially during this good sale i will go first 1. Roseline Cote du provence 2004 - excellent value around $14 easing drinking make it a bit cold before you drink 2. Catamayor Sauvignon Blanc uruguay 2005 - $13 this is great and such a good deal. very fresh fruits and low alcohol will be good for papa malcolm
  10. hello i am following up on this thread over here since on the montreal board i posted a comment from the local newspaper the wine writer claims that the global rise in high alcohol wines is due to global warming i.e. global warming = warmer weather = higher sugar content in grapes = higher alcohol wines this is his thesis i think this is one of the most ridiculous things i have herd in a long time any opinions?
  11. i like the truffles story. i did not know that you can buy them here as a consumer. it was nice on the front page gazette i see everywhere including in my neighborhood everyone has it on saturday and it is plateau so supposed to be franco. for this reason i guess is the entertainment. the frenchie paper is not so good in the weekend. so the west island comment i guess is not based on reality. i am not lodging a complain with the gazette just asking if anyone reads this guy and what they think of him and where he came from
  12. carswell dont be angry about my comments about the brasao and the other mexico wine. i admitted after that i spoke to soon, could have been my flu from that week. i am not a doctor or lawyer or PDG of big company so i like to see good cellar selections and wines for dirnking now. To promote the wines of maison nicolas is a joke if you know this house. to give so many stars then you wonder what else is at play. you maybe do not read the gazette since he reviews some high-end wines as well today he has a $176 barolo if i remember (i resycled the paper already) and also some wines in the $40 range which is a lot for me and most people. i think you think i only drink $$$$ wines my best wines to love are under $15 thank you carswell for the lesson in winemaking, believe me i know this industry very well do you not think it is a gross generalization to blame high ripeness on global warming (think australia, california over the last 15+ years - think of the average temperate) or on vineyard management? or even worse to teach the poor west islanders that this is why wines are high alcohol now? even worse grandpa complains about high alcohol and then does not post the alcohol % of the wines he reviews!!!! do you imagine frank prial would write something so stupid? cook-em-all i guess you have a problem with other peoples opinions. i am not a wine reviewer but i do have a wine business. am not in a position to review any wines and anyways a lot of people i think would not care about what i drink. that is why i ask what is malcolms background. i guess you agree with everything you read. hooray for discourse on this board! phaneuf i like i find he is much more balance and informative. it is the anglo readers ii think that are being sold some fairy tales
  13. hello friends wondering if anyone here reads the wine reviews in the gazette. not sure if it comes more than saturday but i only have the saturday issue each week to read the food articles today malcolm anderson blames high-alcohol wines on global warming the first i have heard this comment, maybe it is peculiar to the hot wines at the saq high alcohol = global warming. not to get too deep into wine talk but this is really the craziest thing i have heard in a while. how did this guy get his job!! he loves to generalize there is not a lot of direction and education for all the montrealers out there i wish he had more sense in his writings and focus on the saq and what can be had that is truly great and a good find here it seems to be a good wine comes here then it disappears in 2-3 days as all the wine connaiseurs buy all the stock he does not even seem to focus on new releases or saparate SIGNATURE from CLASSIC and other wines like the saq does does anyone else read his reviews? what do they think today he reviews an undrinkable wine. Maison Nicloas Cabernet from d"oc $11.50 in the saq for sure cheaper than evian in france i picked one up at atwater since i won 15% off and decided to see what grandpa anderson was drinking. this is a terrible wine, worse than a dep wine. for $3 more drink Roseline which is very tasty from provence. what they did to the cabrnet grape at maison nicolas is a crime against the vine clearly he is drinking magic kool aid if he think this is a good wine - 3 and a half stars !!! lower on the page he give CONUNDRUM 4 stars. i suspect he will go to the guigal lala event and then give those wines 3 stars who is this man and where did he come from?
  14. wow - this is great! i never herd of this how come there is no discussion here is anyone from here going? i assume lesley will go for the paper to tell the story? good to see the price and have 1 year notices, i will need the time to save
  15. so the bordelaise is gone? they win #1 and he goes!! more jokes
  16. too bad i guess please how do i get on the list and how much does it cost is it only for industry or regular joe can come
  17. not to my tastes flavor combinations were a mess which i find always with nuevo latino food but lesley - to be serious in no stretch of a fantasie can they be best anything this reminds me of BU being on the list last year - of BEST RESTAURANTS. a joke again. there is not a lot of food on the menu there unless you count charcuterie i will check out O CHALET but i never herd of it what did you think of garcon? i have had many lunches there no dinner due to work but thank god the money for the food is not from my pocket forgot to say that for me thuet is incredible the 2x i ate there. for sure now raza and garcon will not have trouble filling their seats this winter also to give kudos bronte the food did not go down since the award they did a good job going from empty to full every night doing top top quality
  18. what a joke who is chris johns? i agree with bronte last year but please garcon and raza? ccep deserves of course
  19. i will show up with a half-empty bottle of goats do roam see what he says lesley what is this event and how do can we go
  20. happy halloweeen sale at the saq 15% off on the internet 10%,15%,20% off from the store depending on the card you get (lucky draw) in real and virtual world must spend $100+ to get the deal sale ends oct 31 good luck boo hooo
  21. yeah, i thought so i herd that the series including the one from you and laurent godbout would be in english now just wanted to check it out.... you have a lot of fans man i hope that you can deal with the pastry groupies!
  22. i think you are not getting the humor of the site. it is cheeky british style humor 'to take the p*ss' as they say out of something does not mean bashing, it is just a sense of humor about it i think that wine appreciation needs a real sense of humor i have been to too many tastings where you have many fine bottles and everyone is silent and solem and serious about it. this is not fun! wine should be enjoyed in the spirit of mondavi - with friends and families and good humor and good times not to be so serious as to scare people away
  23. if you like jokes you will like the show NO RESERVATIONS. bourdain is very very dark humor style in this show much more than his other shows. he is also very critical and looks to be hungover each day. i think he will be happy to see that in quebec it is still permis to smoke in many restos but of course not at the best ones. try that is new york or california
  24. chopper do you know if this book is only in french
  25. this is just a joke ribo, i am saying this since many canadians most likely did not see the show since it is on a US channel not available here they may confuse this with the old bourdain shows on food network
