  1. i do not know but i doubt it. i have a worker who spends serious money on food/wine and he laugh when i asked him. 250 euros for oilve oil = 375 loonies. i dont even think anyone can afford that in the restaurant biz here, forget about local peoples. if it is good enough for thomas keller it means that it is too expensive for here
  2. Armando Manni is excellent but too expensive for mtl budgets and retailers will lose money beecause nodoboy will buy it. something like 400 euros per liter this is more than petrus! i also like the american olive oil from napa when it comes from a vineyard... so fruity and intense with the burning aftertaste. also i find that we dont get vineyard balsamico from napa.sonoma probaly another conspirarcy by the saq
  3. yes but this was the one on park avenue. all of them are garbage. i think the guy has a point that toque is not great, certainly the only great thing there isthe foie gras and the price on the bill and the wine list. it is too serious now i likd it better as a bistrot in st denis lesley what happened to n laprise restaurnt in new york? i did not hear of it even tho i lived there for years
  4. the problem is that you need 5 costumers in the same night ready to pay that price for a bomb and personally in montreal it's not possible...(by the glass). I wont pay for a wine open for several days... ← there are many machines that can keep a wine perfectly prreserved for days/weeks under inert gas. they are v. common in the us because many restaurants have a hgue list of wines by the glass i think the market can afford it here jfl91, i would be there with you paying to drink glasses of legendary wines so you don't have to put a car payment for the bottle
  5. riboflavin needs to get out more
  6. Little doggies like white zin
  7. Yes, but then you cannot have the new style surf and turf or the amazing rissotoo shredded pork with foie gras sauce
  8. Appetizers are $10-$22 Mains are $20-$40+ Wines start at $60 Desserts are $10+ Cheese course is $10+ per person depending on the # of cheeses It ain't cheap to eat there. For the full experience, I'd count on $100+ per head.
  9. Nope. They don't even have a sign on the door. Talk about your cachet! ← they put a sign some time ago
  10. Della, Club Chasse et Peche - no doubt. Make sure you book on a friday or saturday - the 'scene' is fun.
  11. Don't you mean Fergus Henderson? I herd this was going to be a meat-freak joint with a butcher on site.
  12. Sorry, my bad - the two best chefs (ex-) of the Globe Group.
  13. There are some new restos that are supposed to be opened/opening: 1. Joe Beef - from the Globe group 2. Daylight - from the BU group Any infos on them?
  14. Duh, that's not his point. Why have any smoked meat when we have smoked turkey? I would also like to know if we have pastrami here, or since everyone prefers smoked meat there is no corned beef and no passtrami!!
  15. I am trying to find the latin american drink AGUARDIENTE as they have in Colombia. Doesn't seem that the SAQ carries it also the same for CACHACA from Brazil. Is there something similar available mfor both?
  16. You should consider noo yawk pizza.... we don't have anything that comes close . here. Also very good barbq at BLUE SMOKE man i miss that place
  17. Their marketing is excellent with Wolf Blass, the evil Little Pengiun, Jacbobs Creek, etc. I read somewhere that Jacob's Creek is the most recognizable brand in the wine world. Also, many of the big Oz wine companies own American ones (SOuthcorp, BeringerBlass) so this gives them huge marketing power. In the end this is best for consumers since it usually means lower prices. We have excllent prices on the lower end of Oz wines incl. Jacobs Creek, which is excellent QPR.
  18. The 1998 Fay price came from a 2005 winery tasting room list; later vintages cost less. Australian world domination… maybe if they stopped going big all the time. ← Sorry - made a mistake and accidentally deleted my post. The Stag's Leap Fay '98 is generally available, even on the east coast, for $60-ish. There is no way the winery can sell it for $185 it is selling now from the winery for $85 - a little more than the release cost. It's common in restaurants as well because of the name value - the 1976 tasting. Maybe you saw the 1985 which is rare and is one of the greatest american cabs. Its hard to find but if you do, grab it... The SAQ price seems reasonable if you include inside the taxes and the fxchange rate, which was FOR SURE higher at the time than today. Check the winery web site and remember that we are talking about STAG'S LEAP not STAGS' LEAP - these are two different wineries! I tried pasting a link before but it got screwed up. If you are spending that kind of money then grab the Dominus, much better wine for a little more money but twice the volume! I must apologize since people have taken my words too strongly. Wine is just fermented grape juice so we shouldn't take it too seriously. For me, it is part of my work and my passions so I can get very excited. Am a little dismayed about all the people who say that they happily drink wines of a certain price because it suits them. If we assume that you have 1 bottle every week of $15, would you never consider abstaining for 3 weeks and then purchasing 1 bottle of $45 just to try it? Or forget the price, what about the types of wine. Simple wines vs more complex wines? Or arrange a tasting with your friends so that the cost of the bottle of wine is shared among many people. THis is how I got into wine, and I still MOST enjoy wines of $15 or less (even better $10!) because they can bring a joy to the drinker that is almost as good as wine 2x or 5x or 10x its price. That is the beauty of wine. However, to have a perspective on wine you need to try a wide variety or types, varietis, etc. THen again, maybe some people just like to drink wine and don't care that much, which i can also understand.
  19. You are awesome! I will call them to order my goat. I was advised to go to the butcher on Onatrio a little east of St. Laurent but their premises are filthy! Thanks for the choices, I will check them out this week.
  20. Love the Borsao, if you will - if I want my wine to taste like Lollipops, I'll put the bottle on a stick and shrink wrap it. The SAQs time has come and gone Carswell. They serve no purpose in our world today beyond ensureing that our fatcat govt has a strong source of revenue. I say put the concession up for tender and let the strong big importers bid for it. My tax dollars being diverted by an agent who compensates the SAQ to promote Little Penguin? Surely you are joking. In a open, fair market I welcome the rise of Little Pengiun, Sutter Home, Arbor Mist, Yellow Tail, and whomever else wishes to compete for that segment. Here where our government shields us so it can skim all the profits? I expect nothing but the finest wine at the $10-$15 price point. Thanks for the heads up on the courrier vinicole. I was looking more for the value price sub $20 zins I can use to fuel my BBQ rather than high-end offerings. I bought a bunch of Coppola merlot today ($27 a bottle!) which I am used to buying at my supermarket, i just closed my eyes when I hit the cash register to pay....
  21. Does anyone know where I can get goat from? I want to make curried goat.
  22. I am neither a troll nor an insulter with an agenda; I just have my own opinions. I can see how the Barsao appeals to those that love sangria, wine coolers, and the spiked high school punch of their teenage years. To me, it's Sutter Home from Spain. However, I will not condemn it yet, I'll take Casswell's advice and chill it next time before I guzzle. I take back my comments about the LA Cetto; the Petite is tasting fine tonight, nothing special; I would argue that it is neither over-extracted nor a fruit bomb, but it is a tooth-staining inky monster. To me, it's more of a rustic home-made style that one would expect from Baja California. Definitely good value at the price, in fact I will buy a case and lay it down for 2-3 years to see what happens. Anyone drinking this today would best guzzle each glass alternating with a glass of water and Maalox. When you have a monopoly, you leave yourself open to criticism. My experience with the SAQ has been sub-par so far, I had the shock of my life this afternoon while trying to procure some CANADIAN ice wines for some incoming business clients tomorrow - their selection is horriffic. Also, an informal tour of the terrasses of the city confirms that Little Pengiun monster has taken over the wine lists in the Old Port. Peeking into the wine cellar at LES REMPARTS, an allegedly "award-winning" wine list, I saw more bottles of Little Pengiun than anything else, all chilling at a subdued 55 degrees... Scary stuff. One last issue - is there a release schedule for the SAQ? I asked the store manager at the one in the Eaton Center and he said that wines fairly randomly show up and that we should not expect the summer Zinfandel release until AFTER the summer?!
  23. I woke up this morning with a nasty sinus infection that has been building since yesterday, so my tasting abilities were probably impaired. My friends tell me that the real value point for the SAQ is south american wineries, which I confess I know nothing about. Hopefully I'll learn more in the next few months. I was surprised to see that in the sub $15 category there were almost no german or Austrian wines, let alone the typical new world wines. Don't get me wrong - I too would prefer to drink the best possible wine for the best price. I was just surprised to be steered towards those choices. I sniffed at the remained for the Cetto Petite Sirah and I could begin to see the attraction; the tannins had softened and I could detect the start of the inky black fruit that distinguishes the varietal.
  24. I assume you are referring to the "launch party" at Cafe des Eclusiers? Is anybody going? Maybe this can be an unofficial 514 offline? If anyone wants to grab a bite post-party maybe we can all go to L'Express or a BYOB and live it up.
