  1. sorry identiflier but arcade fire is not nirvana, just another overated montreal band, despite spin magazine we are not the next seattle. speaking of eurodeli what the hell happened to their spinach stufed pizza? it sucks now for tapas: sala rosa is good tapeo is great, amzing vibe deux is cool but food is so-so. they need to stop the lame interpretation of thomas keller with the salmon cornets, this is a joke pinxto is so-so, they are haunted by the ghost of one of montreals greatest joints that used to be in that space. had some mixed meals there but the food is ok. depending on who you ask club chasse main courses are also tapas :-) in my opinion we do not have real tapas here, certainly not iberian style i think montreal could be a good place for nouveau tapas with our local speciaties served as a small dish e.g. poutine, smoked meat. would be great. also quebec foie gras which is good. also lately i discovefed our honeys thanks to the nice man in atwater market. wow it is great.
  2. they had the exact same sale erlier this year... i think it is to encourage people to buy oneline more than the store juging from the crowds at the saq at marche atwater i think people understood it is 10 dollars off per botttle... people were stacking up like during the strike
  3. cost i think. wild mushrooms here are veryv ery expensive like gold. if you find the real thing, fresh not dried, be prepared to pay.
  4. thanks you carswell i was going to the marche tonigth to see if any are left. i will call your contacts, also i herd that they have at schwartz a whole smoked turkey! is this for cooking or for eating like deli?
  5. is it possible to have fresh whole organic not GMO farm raised turkey here in montreal? like the one you find at whole foods in the usa, not a big monster like you see in the supermarket! please let me know if you now where i can find one in time for dinner on monday
  6. So JFL in the end how much is one bottle canadian?
  7. Mainly french wines? Would you be able to define cheap a little better..... ? ← french, australia, very little us on that night. lots of wines from s. america and spain/chile/arg/other latino places david is not really a wine guru but he enjoys good stuff. btw he looks v. happy with his new place not cranky and miserable like i used to see him at globe and rosalie. strange that tehre are no french fries on the menu but i forgot to ask david why. in time i hope they get a proper sommelier or maybe just consult with one. the placeis so small there is no room for a big wine cellar. from globe you would think there would be more cali cult cabs but there was not even one that night. i think they are aiming at the common man and keep it all v. democratic with good wines good prices. a good place maybe to learn about new wine regions for value wines. many wines at $40 most at $50 a few at $60 very few above $80 there is a special stash of secret wines you can ask for. wierd stuff from spain. they will also take special requests for wines if there is somethign you want and are regular coustomer seghesio zinfandel at $60 there was la fleur de petrus at $120. this is crazy because at the saq it is $100! dominique portet $60 jp moeix pomerol $50 some burgundy in the $50-$60 range, i had a glass and was not impressed something from stellenbosch, SA right now there is nothign special on thee wine list but i think in time they will add more wines. keep in mind the winelist it changes all the time based on what david is cooking and serving. i hope that when carswell and jfl and other wine gurus go there we will have more reviews of people that know the wines of burgundy and south america and spain. these regions are not for me. the wine list is not bad for such a new resto; but i do not know if this will be a place for real wine gurus. this is for david and fred to decide! i am curious to see lesley's review of the place.
  8. mains - $18 - $25 apps - $7 to $12 and more seafood can be more wine list is cheap
  9. protecting the wineries since there is not enough crop to make wines if they dont use forgein grapes then no wine, no wine nothing to sell = bankrupt i dont know why you are talking about VQA in this context - VQA wines need to have ontario grapes. this is a measure to allow the wineries to make some money to carry them until the next year. VQA is a brand; it doesnt have to mean anything more than that to a consumer. it does not mean that there is good wine in the bottle. far from it if you taste most ontario wine. these wines will not have vqa on them, they will be put in the ontario areas of the LCBO ontario wines need to be better to compete on the global market. if we talk about wines other than the famous ice wines, there is a lot of room for imporvement.
  10. its a protectionist measure due to the crop damage.
  11. same spot, same name different concept dofferent owners i ate at a pre-opneing dinner and was not impressed but will give it another shot. i also find the location bad i hope they do well. maybe because of all the condos and spillover from the w they will do well

    Goodburger

i loved the concept did anyone eat there? angelos on 57th was a fave when i lived in the city, when you ask for extra grated cheese for a couple bucks they put half a pound of parmesan. great stuff!
  13. yes but can i have them by the glass? i ate there once and the food was whatever. the terasse makes it all better.
  14. jfl i dont think we are going to see mature wines in a wine bar in montreal. not anytime soon. this requires a wine program. i do not know of any restos that have a big $ budget for this kind of thing. they all buy from the saq and maybe sit on it for a couple years. from time to time there will be a trophy wine at club chasse (haut brion) but this is maybe one bottle, and they buy it privately. places like queue de cheval have a decent wine pgoram but far too expensive and no wine bar i know many private collectors with nice collections but of course you cannot sell these in a resto. we have maybe 3 restos with world-class wine lists and they are too expensive to qualify as everyday wine prices even for the rich. a dream: champlain charest opens a wine bar in the city selling wines at everyday prices
  15. no risk no reward the point of wine tasting is to taste wines and hope to find a good one if the wine is a name and has a reputation you taste to see if it is deserved and if you like it if the price is right you buy it if you go to a restaurant to drink wines you can afford at the saq i think that is a waste of time and opportunity to have a good sommelier to take you on a journey the point of a wine bar is to experience new things you didnt know before. to limit the epxerience by price is to remove some of the greatest wines in the world
  16. i have never seen a good/great wine by the glass in montreal for sure not in the class that you talk of. hubert is good to open great bottles by the glass because he has the clientele of the city that will leave a good decision in his capable hands as to what wine will be nice to try
  17. gus you have a bad attitude why spend any money on good food and why not give all of your income to the poor and live in a box people spend $3000+ on a bottle of wine so why not olive oil if you have it you can spend it why criticize it
  18. i agrree with everything that jfl is saying. there are many many wealthy montrealers. if you look at the cars and the clothes and the money spent at the good restos you will see that there is a market for this. you cant build a whole bizplan around selling drc flights but for sure if you put it on the menu there will be people that take it i find the wine flights at bu and pop uninspiring. there selections even of private imports are not very good. we still dont have a great winebar here and it is sad because many people could learn a lot from a good wine bar i hope that the club chasse guys open one btw i ate dinner at versionlaurgent godbout and their wine list is short and bad but reasonably priced.
  19. also jfl91 i know some coffee shop owners like second cup frnchise and they will do some roasting en prive if you need it. the best is to buy your own roaster, but too much work and smell if you askd me. maybe you should call and ask the art coffee java guys they are nice
  20. the regular montealais is too poor to afford premier cru and better. but this is not the point, we are not monaco or dubai if there is a special event think even students will come to taste mouton and haut brion and yquem and HSS and dunhoff and and rest of the greats. do not be so narrow minded that montreal is only beggars but no banquet - we maybe need financing but still we like good foods and wines!
  21. is this a joking time? stephen shaw? i would not put him in any sentence with ducasse unless it is a juxtaposition. his favorite olive oil i think is canola or maybe bertoli en vrac this is truly a great year for tuscan oliveoil releases so i think you are right that rarewine will have some nice ones, they are very quality conscious. will they ship to montreal? but the comparison is very different in terms of quality. i was not kiding when i say that armando manni is petrus or more accurate sassicaia or gaja or ornellaia of wines it would be nice if i could affford it but this is not the case. it would be nice to organize a party offline with some nice wines and if we share the costs i will bring the manni from one of my visits to the us or europe what do you say lesley and jf91 will be interesting for those to taste such a jewel
  22. for the record the oil is too expensive for torontonians as well since it is not sold there. we should not feel too bad.
  23. jilli42 you live in a great wine city in america there are many good shops there there is a big sale now at macarthur beverages on all rhone, northern and osouthern from 98 to 03. many exlnt values in 20 dollar range http://www.bassins.com
  24. armando is the queen of olive oil so you are in part correct. this is a finishing oil or used as a garnish or a dip, you do not use it for patates frites to make poutine. for those that can afford it, it is a necessity since there is ne plus ultra. also keep in mind jfl has a special price i think from Armando. I have seen it for sale for 400 euros for the litre, 40 euros for 50ml a bottle thin like a pencil. that is why i said that there is no market for an importer here in montreal; there are not enough people who will pay that price if they are too poor or to smart it is not germane. maybe montrealers are also too smart to drink petrus that is why they love borsao
