  1. A little North of Miami but Billy's in Hollywood has been around a while. Delaware Chicken Farm in Hollywood also sells them. (to-go only, it's a seafood/poultry market) http://www.stone-crabs.com

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I'll try to get some tasting notes once he buys and drinks some wine. Cheers, Rich

    Wine recommendation

A co-worker of mine recently returned from a visit to his doctor with orders to begin drinking a glass of red wine daily. Here's the dilemma. He doesn't drink wine (or any alcoholic beverages) and if he must drink wine he prefers sweet whites. In an effort to follow the doctor's orders he is in search of a widely available sweet red wine. All I could think of were Manischewitz and Port. Does anyone know of sweet dessert wines that are produced in large quantities and would be available at a large wine retailer? TIA, Rich
  4. As a tourist when visiting NYC I have found myself at Mandarin court a few times while trying to squeeze in some good food before leaving the city. It's pretty good and usually not packed.
  5. If you want to make the 30 minute run down the Palisades to Han Ah Rhum in Little Ferry or Ridgefield (NJ) you'll be very happy. ← This place sounds interesting. I'll have to check if Ridgefield or Englewood is closer to me. I'm lost up there...
  6. I wasn't able to make it to Mitsuwa last time I visited. I will try to make it this time. Thanks again --Rich
  7. Thanks. Video Guadalajara sounds particularly interesting to me. Are there any asian mega markets in the area? Rich
  8. So I'll be back in New City (Rockland county) again this weekend. I've yet to find anything interesting or ethnic to eat around there. Not even a good asian market or ethnic food shop of any kind. I'm desparate here...any ideas? TIA, Rich
  9. My guess is that the wating period is for the thermocouple to heat up. The thermocouple is what heats the water during the brew cycle. You are supposed to push the power button once to power up the machine. Once the light surrounding the power button stops blinking, the machine is ready to brew. You then select either the one or two cup setting. Enjoy!
  10. If it is permitted I would be willing to donate a few megs to support the Israel gastronomic tour here on eGullet.
  11. I have never seen meyer lemons sold in South Florida. I would think that if they are available it would likely be at Epicure in Miami Beach or Norman Brothers. Good luck. http://www.normanbrothers.com/ http://www.jerrysfamousdeli.com/epicure_home.html
  12. My Father makes the Jewish-style fiselkh. They look very similar to the photos that were posted here but he gives the feet, well...a manicure first by cutting off the tips of the fingers.
  13. Thanks for your help on this. I have a taste for Korean food, or maybe a good bowl of Pho--two things that are kinda uncommon where I live. I'd also like to visit some Asian mega-markets since the ones we have in South Florida are kinda sorry. Anything in Northern New Jersey that is close to Rockland county is fine too. TIA, Rich
  14. Yep, the food quality there continues to go down over time. And the prices continue to rise. Also, their old "schtick" with the short-tempered waitstaff has really turned into downright rude and no longer entertaining.
  15. Thanks guys for your input. I am going to try replicate Pargiot at home on the grill using trimmed, boneless chicken thighs rather than cornish hens. I don't feel like wrestling with little cornish hen carcasses. Plus, she likes the dark meat better. So, are there any secret Israeli grill spices I should know about? I like to use shawarma seasoning but I am trying to replicate the simple grilled flavor of Israeli-style shipudim chicken here. It never seems to be seasoned with anything other than salt and pepper. Ideas? TIA, Rich
  16. I thought I would bump this up in the hopes of finding some interesting places to visit this weekend while I am back in Rockland county. I was thinking about trying to get to China 46 for the Sunday brunch. Any casual Korean food would be great too. Also, I dig Asian mega markets since we're lacking good ones in South Florida. Any ideas? TIA, Rich Edited to add: My knowledge of the area's geogoraphy is limited but it's my understanding that the area is right next to Northern New Jersey so, please suggest anything "worth a drive" within an hour's time. Thanks!
  17. my brother described this as one of the best italian-style sandwiches he's ever had in his life http://www.hollyeats.com/Sarcones.htm rich
  18. I am really curious about how one obtains kosher venison. I am pretty sure an animal can be trapped as long as it is not injured during the process and then slaughtered according to Jewish law. Are there domestic, farm-raised deer? Tell me, please. TIA, Rich
  19. Haas avocados are usually available throughout Florida at approximately twice the price of the typical Florida avocado. Florida avocados are quite large and lack much taste. Nothing close to the richness of a haas avocado. rich
  20. Interesting, thanks. I googled it long before I posted and couldn't find a thing.
  21. Freeze them and either just eat them frozen or put them through a food mill of some sort and you have grape sorbet. Frozen grapes are great!
  22. I found the Blue Door to be a major disappointment all around. Food was just okay and the service was unpleasant. Tell us more about what you are looking for. I'm a local.
  23. I stopped in at one of the local Israeli restaurants in my neighborhood the other day. I ordered falafel as usual. I think falafel is the best fast food planet -- I would give up hamburgers forever if falafel were available on every street corner. My wife ordered pargiot, or what I think is translated into English as "young chicken". The pargiot is what I am trying to figure out. Is it a young chicken? It's seems like it's smaller than a Cornish hen. That brings up another question. Is a Cornish hen a young chicken? I e-mailed my local poultry shop and inquired about spring chickens. They said the closest thing they had to Spring chickens were fryers, which weigh 3-3.5 lbs. Is anyone familiar with the specifics on what exactly pargiot or young chicken is? Are they available in your area? TIA, Rich
  24. I also read somewhere that he did a culinary externship early in his career in Israel. Not sure where, Caesaria comes to mind.
  25. Thanks to all. This should do it. I'll pass on the info as soon as there is a session break. Much appreciated, Rich
