  1. Zotter is an Austrian chocolatier http://www.zotter.at/4.html?&no_cache=1 Their selection is dizzying! http://www.zotter.at/141.html?&tx_shop_pi1[pointer]=max Kentan, galangal is related to ginger, but with a distinctly different flavour.
  2. It's also a really good deal in those big Costco sizes :-)
  3. I really like the "Nuts to You" Pumpkin butter. It's organic and unsalted. I can't remember where I bought it though. Stong's possibly - but I'll see if I can find out. I'm running low so I'll be keeping an eye out for it anyway. It's really delicious when spread on toasted Terra Breads pumpkin seed bread, with St. Dalfour pear preserves
  4. Glad to hear it - pest infestations are indicative of overall unsanitary conditions. There's also an online form and email address here: http://www.vch.ca/environmental/contact.htm
  5. 604-675-3800 That's the number for Vancouver Coastal Health's food inspectors. You should report this so the problem gets dealt with. This reminds me of an experience long ago (~15 years ago), at a local hole in the wall cafe. Squeezed some ketchup on to my fries, and out popped a cockroach. I reported it and was pleased with the response. The restaurant was cleaned up, is still in business. I've never returned though, I've called it the 'cockroach cafe' ever since.
  6. Hey, there's this newly opened South Indian place too. http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showto...dpost&p=1530334 At Oak and Broadway, it would be about a 5 minute drive from the market, or a 20 minute walk I get bread and goodies from PICA frequently, but the dining room can really vary. Haven't eaten there for quite a while though, so shouldn't really comment. The Afghan Horseman recently moved to the 'hood (at 2nd and Anderson), but I have no idea how it is now.
  7. Shouldn't that be 955 West Broadway? I've been keen to try that. Thanks for the report
  8. I was going to suggest Rangoli too. If you're on foot, it's only about a 10-15 minute walk to the market. You could also consider Yaletown for a pre-Granville Island lunch. Hamilton Street Grill perhaps? Then you could hop the little ferry from Yaletown (stops by the Roundhouse community centre, I think) to G.I. for a scenic little boat trip.
  9. ^ Yup. I've been a repeat diner at a number of places (Parkside, Chambar and Rare in particular) as a result of DOV experiences that knocked my socks off. On the flip side, there are a few I've never returned to as a result of DOV disappointments.
  10. Yes, Helmer's is listed for both the Feb 9 and Feb 23 Winter markets: http://www.eatlocal.org/wfm/february.htm
  11. bon ton makes small croissants ...i think ← Quince's croissants are smaller than the norm, and they have frozen ready to bake too, I think.
  12. Heh, heh! It was a DOV dinner that hooked us on Parkside, and it's been a regular destination ever since I was pretty underwhelmed by our Raincity Grill dinner. I had the tartar trio to start and enjoyed that very much (lovely clean, bright flavours). SO had the duck consomme. The duck, mushroom and thyme tortellini were savoury and delicious, but the broth was very thin and watery. SO's main was delicious - a perfectly cooked square of salmon (medium rare with a nice seared finish) on a bed of leeks with baby parsnips on the side. My main was so-so. It was a chicken roll of sorts - a skin-on breast wrapped into a role. Trouble is, the chicken was a bit gristly and the skin was rubbery. I'd have forgiven the gristle if the skin was crispy . The flavour was good enough and the sides were delicious (whipped Pemberton potatoes, a generous portion of mushrooms and roasted celeriac). We both had the Fireweed honey pot au creme and enjoyed that very much. Service was well timed but we were sat against the rail and I found their practice of serving over the rail rather odd (and a bit irritating).
  13. Oh that sounds good! Here's hoping they deliver across the bridge.
  14. Yup, and it (and questions of acknowledgment of prior work) didn't escape the notice of the Ig Nobels http://improbable.com/2007/05/18/five-seco...out-background/
  15. The Field Guide to Produce may fit your needs. A typical entry includes: - General Description - Alternate Names - Season - Purchasing (what to look for, what to avoid) - Storage - Tips on preparation, serving suggestions, and flavour affinities. Also (although it doesn't discuss storage): The New Oxford Book of Food Plants While this has less in the way of practical tips, it is a very readable reference that covers the botany, nutrition and use of food plants.
  16. Last time I'd had pizza from them was October sometime and it was November I'd heard they'd closed - I think (last fall's a distant memory now). I don't know if they have/will reopen anywhere, but their website is down.
  17. I haven't had them lately, but the croissants at Quince on 3rd and Burrard have are quite superb and reminded me very much of a true Parisian croissant.
  18. Sigh I'm a loss for delivered pizza now that Amadeus has closed.
  19. Flash frozen at sea, and carefully defrosted fish can be much fresher tasting than 'fresh' that's been transported and held for a time. I'm a big fan of Iron Maiden's salmon (that's the boat, not the band ) Iron Maiden seafoods delivers (see website for schedule), or you can catch them at the Vancouver farmers markets. http://www.wildseafoods.com/index.html

    Roasted Cauliflower

What a coincidence to find this thread sitting at the top - I've just finished roasting up a bunch of cauliflower that will form the basis of a Roasted Cauliflower Soup :-) I will saute a bit of garlic, add chicken stock, the roasted cauliflower and maybe a bit of nutmeg and let it simmer a bit before blending and finishing off with a bit cream.
  21. Yes they do. I've bought andouille at Oyama. Can't say if it has an authentic flavour or not, but it's pretty darn tasty in my Jambalaya :-)
  22. I fully support the practice of restaurants wanting a guarantee given the prevalence of the book-and-no-show crowd, but I'd like to see disclosure of cancellation policies somewhere (without having to call the restaurant to find out). That said, I'm really looking forward to my Raincity dinner! Yum!!! My husband is swooning over the leek and parsnip combo (his two favourite foods!) in the salmon main
  23. I booked at Raincity Grill for DOV-08. Their menu looks delish! It may be our only DOV meal this year thanks to a busy schedule and tight budget. I booked online and noted a first - they needed my credit card # to secure the booking. I have no problem with this, but I am annoyed that this booking policy (nor cancellation policy) isn't mentioned anywhere (at least, I couldn't find a statement on Tourism Vancouver's DOV page, OpenTable.com, nor Raincity Grill's website). I'm curious, are other restaurants requiring CC #s for booking this year?
  24. Sad news indeed. RIP Urban Peasent!
