  1. Looking at the sites posted by Toliver, I spied another favourite that I'd forgotten about: Charlston Chews I loved the vanilla ones!
  2. Bottlecaps - yeah! I'd forgotten about those. I loved the root beer ones too. I was a big fan of candy and bubble gum cigarettes too - wonder if that had anything to do with my starting to smoke at age 11 (I quit, thank goodness, over 20 years ago). There I was a wee kid emulating my mom (who smoked) by blowing the powdered sugar through the wrapping.
  3. OK, I'll give. What are soap candies? I miss those peppermints that were red and white striped but weren't hard - they were like solidified foam. King Leo comes close. Then there were the clove flavored hard candy sticks.... ← They are small, ju-jube like candies that taste very perfumey and soapy. After the initial aversion , they are/were positively addictive
  4. Softee Toffees were a favourite for me - all except the coffee flavoured ones (still don't like coffee flavoured sweets of any type). Others - Mike and Ikes, Hot Tamales - candy necklaces, bracelets - loved the Pop Rocks - soap candies! Hated them at first, but later really fond of them. - marshmallow filled mini "ice cream" cones, and marshmallow anything (except the marshmallow bananas - hated the fake banana flavour) - Mojos - once I'd spent my candy allowance on other goodies, any leftover pennies would buy a couple of mojos per penny. ETA: Almost forgot - garbage can candy! http://candyaddict.com/blog/2008/04/02/ret...garbage-can-dy/
  5. Choices market has the Liberty Mediterranean yogurts on sale until May 31 at $3.39 (choices club price).
  6. I really like the selection of food storage containers at Dunlevy's and haven't seen the equivalent in more general kitchen supply places (but I expect other restaurant supply would have similar). There are a number of systems of rectangular or round containers that makes for very efficient storage both when in use, and when empty.
  7. No, just a bunch of 'opening soon' signs on the window (the name may be coming back to me - "Zironi's"? something like that). They have big pizza shoes to fill, so here's hoping for the best edited to add: They have a website under construction: http://zironis.com/
  8. On the bright side (I hope), thin crust Italian pizza is returning to the Amadeus Pizza location at 2nd and Anderson. I forget the name but it started with a 'Z'. Hooray, pizza is back in the 'hood :-)
  9. Mmm, mayo! Well, we have Hellman's on hand at the moment, and that'll do. When I can find it (which is almost never locally it seems), I adore the Delouis Fils mayo from France. It has a rich flavour and a nice Dijon mustard kick to it. I'll have it by itself on bread, in sandwiches, with meats, as a dip for veggies or whatever, but especially love to stir it into scrambled eggs. When the Hellman's runs out, I'll be making this: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=61958&st=30# Thank you for that bleudauvergne!
  10. Dunlevy - on 7th at Manitoba - also sells to the public. http://www.dunlevyfoodequipment.com/htdocs2/index.html
  11. I've been for lunch - and a very delicious lunch it was! I had striped bass, prepared similarly to the black cod mentioned above - with aged sherry vinegar and an assortment of cherry tomatoes. SO had a paella - with a generous amount of seafood buried among the rice. It was a rather sunny day and some of the tables in the center were completely in direct sunlight - I was relieved when we were sat at one where I could sit in the shade and my sun-loving SO could bask in the warmth. The crowd was mostly business types that day (even though it was a holiday Monday), and one fellow felt the need to broadcast his voice throughout the room. The room is gorgeous and airy, but perhaps a bit vulnerable to noise propagation. I haven't been for dinner but I'm keen to return for lunch again soon. They had some yummy sounding sandwiches on the menu. I fancy myself popping in for a lunch at the spacious bar, and enjoying a sandwich with one of their Caesars (which looked pretty fine from what I saw). Nice wine list, and interesting options by the glass. However I found their markup to be a bit steep.
  12. I saw salt cod at Donald's market on E. Hastings at my last visit (a couple of weeks ago). (edited to fix typo)
  13. http://www.localwineevents.com/Okanagan-Wine/ edited to add: http://www.thewinefestivals.com/trellis/ev...ed=1&category=3
  14. Is that the place on the East side of the street, just north of Marine? I haven't been there for quite a while, but have enjoyed some memorable meals in their friendly, humble restaurant. Last time, I had a fantastic fatty pork and garlic shoots dish that really stood out.
  15. Le Crocodile's rack of lamb is a classic.
  16. Is it Fraser Meadow that makes a vanilla-raspberry flavoured one (in a clear container)? I love that one - very light, fresh flavoured and creamy (if a little runny).
  17. It is open: 781 Denman St., Vancouver ← Good news! Mmmmm, schnitzel!!
  18. Ah, just shows to each their own The mocha is my least favourite - the combo of yogurt tang and mocha just don't work for me. We've got the prune and walnut one on the go now. I throw a handful of Granola King granola on it for a snack. Yummy! As creamy as it is, there's much less fat content that say, a premium ice cream. Maybe more on par with a gelato. I love the plain for cooking - and it makes a heck of a lassi too!
  19. Would frozen tomatoes do? One of the vendors (Klippers, I think) at the Winter Market had frozen tomatoes on offer. They were whole, in their skins and would be suitable for cooked dishes.
  20. Thanks for this post. I've been following the developments and am worried. Hopefully the election of a FotF member to UBC's Board of Governors will help. This is a link to FotF (Friends of the Farm): http://www.ams.ubc.ca/clubs/friendsubcfarm/Site/Home.html (edited to fix a typo)
  21. It's a new flavour. I picked some up at the dairy vendor in Granville Island. I'm sure it'll turn up wherever the Méditérrannée line is stocked. That's my new fave, for now, but I also especially love the prune and walnut one. I sprinkle a little granola on for a healthy and indulgent snack.
  22. That's exactly why I love the Moore's ones
  23. I'm quite partial to those from Moore's Bakery in Kerrisdale. Nicely spiced dough, very traditional. You can probably find them at Stong's grocery on Dunbar too. Terra bread's are very, very tasty, but don't quite hit the traditional note as well for me as Moore's do.
  24. Yay, scored a cheek today! Oyama is a treasure indeed We call them "Oh Yummy!" at our house and they are a frequent source of a quick weeknight dinner. Thanks so much for this good news, eatrustic!
