  1. Do NOT eat at Tommy's unless you're drunk and want to throw up. Jay of Jay's Jayburgers used to work at Tommy's and has taken Tommy's chili cheese burger and made it digestible. You don't have to call HazMat before attempting to eat it. Seriously.
  2. Not exactly sure what you mean by streetfood. Something you walk up and buy? Something you eat in your car? A papusa if I am not mistaken is a Salvadorean thing (never had one, yet). A Baja Fresh is a pretty good small chain of relatively healthy Mexican Restaurants where you can get ahi tacos and other good stuff. Lower in fat. Some street food: Grand Central Market, between Hill & Broadway, downtown, has good stuff, particularly Mexican, like gorditas, burritos, tacos. Pink's on La Brea is known for it's chili dogs. Orson Welles purportedly ate 18 in one sitting/standing. Oki Dog on Pico has bacon and pastrami wrapped dogs. Jay's Jayburger at Virgil & Santa Monica Blvd., has good chili cheese burgers and dogs. The In N Out burger to order is the Double Double Animal Style. Get The Deal at Fatburger, asking for the burger "on the char." However, IMHO, the best is the Hamburger Platter at Thai American Express Cafe, on Rowena in Silver Lake, not far from your location. Also good are the care asada burritos and the tamales at Yuca's on Hillhurst also near you. But what is of interest to you? Want Thai? Japanese? Chinese? Middle Eastern? Here's a link to LA Weekly's Where to eat now feature done by Jonathan Gold and Michele Huneven. http://www.laweekly.com/food/totallist.php
  3. Looks like you gotta think outside the box.
  4. this is what i was referring to. as far as those little aluminum boxes go, i'm guessing that a whole lotta research would be put into a new type of box, as the effects these things have on juice are not doubt negligible, but put your wine in aluminum for 3 years and see what happens. The wine will get alzheimer's?

Is there an abattoir for lobsters?
  6. So, how much clout does your name carry? What's your last name? Mind if I pose as you on the Left Coast? none. that's why it doesn't matter if my assistant uses her name. Maybe she has a good phone voice?

  8. Call me. I'll drink yours.
  9. Just got an email that Wine Expo in Santa Monica is having a champagne tasting and tasting menu at Joe's in Venice on December 29. $185 per person all inclusive. Call Wine Expo to reserve.
  10. That does it! I'm changing my name to Zagat.
  11. you put it in the bathtub, next to the case of piels cans. If you "got" gin, you'd be making it in the bathtub. BTW, do you bathe?
  12. Not just the pouring, what about icing it down? Do they make giant ice buckets for this?
  13. You are making an unwarranted assumption.
  14. If you are like me you are jealous you didn't think of the Zagat guide first. But I do think they shape the results and ignore ballot box stuffing by others. I also think there's a tendency on the part of voters to exaggerate their habits in terms of number of times they eat at high end spots. In the early years in LA, I used to write in places all the time. But they never made the guide. Yet the editors routinely name new places that have just opened and weren't on the ballot. Also in the days of the paper ballots, some local places were known for handing out ballots to their customers in hopes of getting good votes. On the movie front, their guide lacks credibility in that it is so focused on films of the last 5 years. They worked around this a little by getting a lot of film students to vote. Otherwise lots of classic films wouldn't have gotten any votes. Basically, it's a decent check list or inspiration for what to rent at the video store. Can't see this being published more than every 3 or 4 years.
  15. I've had ankimo at sushi bars and it's usually a small shaving of the stuff on rice (for tourists) or not. About a week ago I had a whole cake of it served as an appetizer in ponzu or some sauce at Sushi Ike in Hollywood. Tasty. The odd thing was that after I had ankimo I was able to appreciate sea urchin sushi for the first time.
  16. Not only that, they are only going to sell French wine. A place after Plotnicki's heart.
  17. What are the key ingredients in the green label variety?
  18. Received a flyer the other day offering the 99 Claret at $430 per case (retail $480) and the 2000 Chardonnay at $250 (retail $288). The Claret, hopefully as good as the 97, is 72% Cab, 19% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot & 2% Petit Verdot. There are 1,100 cases of the Claret and 1,500 cases of the Chard. Estate bottled. More info: caves@whiterockvineyards.com.

    Guy Savoy

Every three star in France and some that were three and are now two (L'Esperance, Cote St Jacques,Oustau de Baumaniere). My husband wants a medal from the French government. It wouldn't surprise me if Michelin or some gourmet society did have a medal. Did you/he become Knights of the Tastevin or some such? If you had trouble finishing at Guy Savoy, I wonder how you fared at Cote St.-Jacques?

    Claret

FWIW, White Rock Claret, particularly the 97, would be an excellent choice with meat or duck or cheese.

We're talking every 3 star in Paris, or every 3 star in France? Either way, quite a daunting feat.

What was the tariff? Did they reduce it because you passed on the second serving of canard? Sounds like a good meal. The time I ate at GS there was a taxi strike that happened that night. At meal's end, GS had had his own fleet of dark green vehicles drive patrons back to their hotels. This was in the 2 star days.

    The Wine Test

Is it tasting or is it ESP?
  25. I've actually read this is called a "Buckeye". http://www.digsmagazine.com/host/host_mart...tiniprimer3.htm Appears to be so, however, when Wambaugh was drinking them at a place called Monaghan's in Pasadena, they were called Black Marbles. In fact, I think he wrote a book with that title.
