  1. Any demographic stuff available on the average Zagat reader?

In the Los Angeles guide, California Pizza Kitchen and The Cheesecake Factory generally duke it out for most visited restaurant. And they make the list of 50 most popular.

  2. I don't think McDonald's and its legal advisers are dumb enough to sue a food critic and/or his publication out of existence. What a suit like this does is make just about everyone think twice before publishing stuff critical of  the Golden Arches and its emanations. It also tells that world that McDonald's stands behind the quality of its food, such as it is.  Far more effective than putting someone out of business, and far more impact, for that matter, than most of its recent advertising campaigns. But you are right about the US, they won't try it there.

Right. They get the headline. Then they settle the case. Maybe even get the critic to eat a few of his words.

  3. On behalf of the rest of the world I am bringing suit for defamation against Steven Shaw for defaming the rest of the world as "frivolous" and that we are like how the U.S.A. in regards to negligence, products liability, etc. by which he clearly implies "stark raving" but would rather say "bat shit."

Implies nothing. The innuendo was clearly defamatory, but don't you folks have enough on your plate with the world press constantly harping on SARS and mad cow?

  4. To quote Bux:  "Nothing makes me more homesick for France than a discussion of andouille, except perhaps one about andouillette. ......."

My question, how can we sell 'Andouille' here in the States, especially 'Cajun' and a name like 'Prudhomme' (and/or other manufacturers) when there is not a single piece of 'intestine' in it?

When we say andouille, don't we mean short for andouille ham?

  5. It does seem like these lists are for a mental dessert island, not a physical one.  On the latter, wouldn't we want books on raw food and, of course, grilling?

hollywood, note this from my first post . . .

But this thought experiment assumes that you're not actually on a desert island since that might narrow your ingredients to the point that cookbooks would be superfluous.

    In any event . . .

    What would your books be?

We don't need no stinkin' books. We need F-I-R-E!

  6. Some of my favorites:

    Cru Bourgeois-

    Chateau Patache d'Aux, Medoc

    Chateau Noaillac, Medoc

    Vieux Chateau Landon, Medoc

Chateau Ramage La Batisse, Haut Medoc (excellent)

    Chateau Hantellian, Haut Medoc

    Chateau Cap Leon Veyrin, Listrac

    Chateau Le Haye, St. Estephe

    also

Chateau Siran, Grand Cru Exceptionnel, Margaux

Watch out for the wines of Fronsac as they can be great values.

I had hoped you'd chime in. Thanks for the recos.

  7. Perhaps you could advise us novice campers of the significance (?) of this term on French wines. Any good ones? Just a marketing gimmick?

  8. Very comprehensive coverage. Oddly, I've been to Galatoire's several times over the years and always had excellent service and pretty good food. Agree about Commander's. It's sorta the Taillevent of NO.

I wish Deacon would come back and throw in his 2 cents.

  9. I'd recommend the Bungalow in Corona Del Mar for steaks and seafood. If you're at the Ritz Carlton, they have a good dining room there (called The Dining Room) but the prices are at a premium. Some like the view if not the food at the roof level restaurant at the Surf N Sand in Laguna. Is it called Splashes? I forget.

  10. Also, avoid anything served as food at the Music Center.  It is mislabelled.

Generally, I'd agree with you, but I haven't been to Otto's since Patina Group took over (they seem to have a lock on food service at most museums and cultural spots these days, the Getty being a notable exception, the latter having good food).
