  1. Well, I read through all those other forums and so on, and the most attractive option (big surprise) is the idea of travel and self-teaching. Since I have already kind of embarked on the getting an apprentice-ship path, I think I would be happiest if I continue on the less structured approach. Save up, travel to Spain, France, Italy (more suggestions?) and taste and see and smell and absorb all that people are doing. Thank you everyone! I feel lucky to have such a lovely resource.
  2. Best Topic ever. I live on Peanut Butter. By choice. Certainly Peanut Butter and dill pickle. I read about it in Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, and It's totally delicious. Grilled cheese with peanut butter is about as rich as I can handle, but its very comfort food-y. Yum yum yum.
  3. thank you both! that's a great start
  4. I've been struggling with the idea of culinary school for a while, and thought that I'd decided against it but am now having thoughts again. . . I know that I want to continue to make my living by making delicious sweet things for people, however I don't know if pastry school is truly a necessity. I'd love to know people's opinions. I've been mostly discouraged from going when I talk to the culinary school graduates that I know personally, but I'm thinking I should maybe gather a wider range of thoughts. thanks so much!
  5. So does this place still exist? I haven't heard much about it recently . . . Anybody know?
  6. I also wanted to say thanks for the suggestions! I just arrived in DC and we're going to brasserie beck tonight, i will let you know how it is!
  7. thats' the one! I didn't make them though, we used the store bought variety, because Oma keeps everyone with cupboards full of them, so it was a good opportunity to eat them up!
  8. So I made the mustard soup this weekend for my boyfriends oma and family! We made a whole feast, actually, using many of your lovely recipes and keeping many of your insights in mind! We began with french fries, which i wrapped in little parchment paper cones, served with mayonnaise of course! then bitterballen, followed by that lovely mustard soup. The leek and bacon garnish really was a perfect touch. Dinner was stamppot with the butter braised delicousness of beef, and the little crunchy cookie that i can't spell (spekkelok?) Anyway, thank you for all your work! His oma was absolutely thrilled beyond belief.

    Peanut Butter

Hi everyone, this is something I'm very passionate about! Maranatha brand is the best, chunky for eating out of the jar, smooth for toast!
  10. That's it! Thank you for the recipe and the lovely pictures, such happy memories of holland!
  11. Hi! I'm so happy I found this thread! My Boyfriend's family is dutch. we were in holland with them last year for a bit, and had so much fun getting to taste the food, we can't wait to try your recipes! We've been looking for a good recipe for a soup we tried in Gronigen (sp?) that we were told was called Mustard Soup. . . does this ring any bells? thanks again, keep up the great work!
  12. Wow, this is all so great, thanks everyone! As to the question about specifications, etc. about budget, I'm open to whatever suggestions, but I will probably only eat one "splurge"erific meal and otherwise stick to places where i can ideally get out for under 25.00- i work in food, so of course, i don't make a ton and live on tips. . . wonderful of course, but financially limiting sometimes
  13. thanks for replying to quickly! I think a safe list is a good idea, and I'm coming from Portland, OR, so if Washingtonians aren't cut out for standing in line for 45 minutes, I certainly aren't either! Dino's sounds really good on their website, and reasonably priced. I would also love cocktail suggestions, my friend lives in Eastern Market, but I don't know how easy or likely it is that we will venture from the neighborhood. thanks again! I'm taking notes. . .!
  14. Hello everyone! I am coming to dc in august (crazy, no?) to visit my best friend and I'm wanting to eat some great food in my 4 day stay. I've read around a lot on this forum, and it sounds like i've got to go to 2amys, Jaleo, Zatinya, Central (if finances allow at the time), and maybe dino, Bourbon, Bistro du coin? my dad is in DC often for business and really recommends Bebbo trattoria, though i'd love to hear opinions about that too. I'm very open, I'm looking for the best! I'd love a little guidance! thanks so much!
  15. Thanks for the interesting comments guys! I'll look forward to that recipe!
  16. Thanks for the thoughts ! Recipies anyone?
  17. I had the most delicious Carrot Cake ever yesterday, and apparently it was Vegan! Double Yum! It was dense, and moist and almost fugdy in a way (texture wise). Does anyone have a good vegan carrot cake recipe they'd be willing to share? Thanks! ~Miranda
  18. two creamy wonderful scoops of Tillamook Ice Cream- one peppermint candy and one chocolate peanut butter-- sitting out in the lovely warm sunshine at the Tillamook Cheese factory!
  19. I have so say Vanilla is getting the shaft here! HD Vanilla is absolutely my favorite. Flavors are all very well and good, but choosing just one favorite? it HAS to be vanilla
  20. the other day, i just put a little bit of olive oil and thinly sliced lemon on some salmon before putting it under the broiler and that was pretty tasty. Usually though, we do dill/olive oil//garlic/lemon juice something or other-- lots of dill.
  21. Mmm, i second the thought on the yumminess of Dagoba. the xlocolatl (that might be spelled wrong) is exactly the chocolate/chili bar i've been wanting.

    Tea vs. Chai

chai is definately spiced black tea with milk and sweetner of some sort. Its just another name for tea. thus it drives me nuts when people say "chai tea" because its totally redundant.
