Just an FYI, my salad is going to be more of a main dish composed salad. I'm also looking for anyone local who can lend me a couple of tart pans w/ removable bottoms. -
Beautiful Peter and waaaaaa, I never got to see your garden

I know you said No cupcakes, but the ones from Vegan Cupcakes take over the world are pretty good.

I was actually looking at this recipe as a possiblity for the Heartland Gathering.

We had dinner tonight at Chives. It was excellent. When I get back home, I'll post some pics. We also went to Peggy's cove today. There isnt anything to do per se, except look at the lighthouse. There is also a memorial to Swiss Air flight 111 a short way away.

Just another note about sandwich size. Zingerman's sandwiches come in two sizes. Nosher and Fresser. I just love those yiddish words.

OMG, Randi, if you and Peter eat lobster rolls with Cain's mayo on a toasted, split-top bun, I'm going to cry. As has been correctly stated, a lobster roll should have lobster, mayo, S & P. Nothing else. Bun should be split-top, buttered on the outside only, then toasted on both sides. The filling should be chilled, and have a mix of large and smaller chunks of lobster, and contain both tail and claw meat. Anything else is a lobster salad sandwich, not a lobster roll. I am sooooooo jealous! ← Don't cry..... We didnt have Cain's and according to everyone here, we might not have even had a lobster roll. We did have lobster mixed with mayo and celery on a split top toasted bun. We also had hunks of lobster on a toasted bun with garlic and butter. Peter has the pics and will do the writeup.

I've never heard of Cain's. Is it a New England product? I've never seen it in Canada.

I agree. I haven't come up with a universal item that could go with a sandwich as easily as a salad or soup. For example, you mention a bread - I don't think I would want a slice of bread served in addition to my sandwich. I was thinking fancy cracker, but maybe its more of a salad - potato, pasta, fruit...whatever, but seasoned to be my style. ← I always like some chips with my sandwich!! In fact, whenever I cater a lunch that includes sandwiches, I always include chips.

I so completely and totally live in the wrong state/country. The most exotic thing my Micky D's have is a chipotle Angus burger that really sucks. And Subway, let's not even talk about them. And I *used* to think California was the promised land. ← I wouldnt get too excited about missing the lobster sandwich from Subway. My small town in Ontario has a Subway and they're sold there too. We're probably 1000 miles from the ocean. I asked the manager about the sandwich. She said the lobster is shipped in frozen and then mixed with 2oz of mayo. IMHO, it looks disgusting. It costs 8.49 for a 6" and 17.00 for a 12". I havent tried the McDonald's version, but I've heard that it isnt bad.

Can you talk about what an oatcake is? I've seen them in almost every coffee shop/bakery/market we've visited. I had one today at the Citadel( I was starving). IMHO, it sucked. Of course, I have no frame of reference. Where can I find a good one so I can compare?

We're currently in Halifax enjoying a much needed vacation( after a 3 day family reunion in Cape Breton). I dont drink, but Robin much enjoyed the Alexander Keith's she consumed over the weekend. She usually drinks Blue Light which is a lager. She was surprised she enjoyed the ale as much as she did.

I'm actually in Halifax right now. We just ate dinner at a place called Piccolo Mondo. It was fair, nothing I'd really reccomend. We spent the last few days in Cape Breton, but I didnt get up to Sydney. I think tomorrow we're going to Jane on the Common so I'll report back.

We're flying out of Pearson tomorrow( going to Halifax). We'd like to grab a quick lunch before we park. Any options? Preferably Indian and no chains!!

I use Cook's Illustrated recipe for All American Macaroni Salad. Each piece of macaroni is individual. If it dried out, they have you add a touch of water to make it creamy again. Its a simple recipe, but really good( no vinegar either)

The first respondents on the ethnic tour seemed to think that Saturday morning was the best time, and if we adhere to that, no, I don't think it will possible for someone to do both. Some stores in Niles open at 8 a.m., but there are more than 50 food stores in Niles, so we won't be able to visit more than a fraction of them before lunchtime no matter how early we start. I am assuming we can skip Lo-Carbs R Here and the Sara Lee Outlet, but I assure you that it would be easy to spend the entire morning just at Super H-Mart. The Evanston farmers' market opens at 7:30 a.m., although the time currently set for the group shopping is 9. There are roughly 30 vendors. ← Is there anyway at alternate day can be arranged? The dinner on Friday is at 7:30pm. Is it possible to visit these shops in Nile in the late afternoon on Friday? I for one would like to do both, but obviously, that won't be possible on Saturday. -
Hmmm, thats a pretty rash statement. I think I turn out some damn tasty food on my gas grill. And, I dont have to wait 30 minutes before I can place food on it. I love my gas grill, I'd take it anyday over charcoal. To each her own I guess. This was great. I used a rub and nothing else and it was so moist and flavorful.

Hahaha, I always thought Paula Deen invited the Gooey butter cake using a cake mix. I didnt know it was a real from scratch cake. The things you learn on eG.

Coconut cake is my favorite. Care to share your recipe?

We still have those veggie bags in Canada. I actually used one last week w/ a paper towel and some red leaf lettuce. The lettuce is still good.

Count me in as a big fan. I bought these bags about 4 years ago when they were only availble on QVC. I'm still using the same bags and they work great. They've even been washed numerous times and I havent noticed a decline in how long something stays fresh. They're availble at Bed, Bath and Beyond and there is always a 20% coupon you can use. I recently bought the bread and cold cut bags but havent tried those yet.
