  1. What a find! Amazing what a huge difference there is between the ad pictures and the real thing.... And the photos are supposed to be of the real thing! Maybe the ones in the ads do exist somewhere, in some distant utopia... or distant hell, I guess, depending on how you feel about fast foods.
  2. If you don't mind traveling to the NE, there's Gallo's Seafood on Roosevelt Blvd, on the northbound side just a block or so above Rhawn. Good seafood, reasonable prices and should be able to accomodate your group.
  3. Just sell 'em empty buns and say they're 'air burgers'...... Oh, and that they're all-natural, of course!
  4. You know how some people think you can make some dish Mexican by adding cheese? Maybe this is the Japanese variation-- just wrap something in rice and nori and <poof!> it's sushi!
  5. Wowies! That recipe would make about 12-13 pounds! I'm sorry I can't offer any advice about directions, but if you're going to experiment I'd suggest cutting the recipe in half, or maybe even a quarter of the amounts.
  6. Thanks to a link from my cousin's blog, Suburban Guerrilla, here's another theory concerning disappearing bees. Specifically, the pesticides that coat genetically modified corn seeds.
  7. Maybe the students are under 21 and aren't allowed to work with the grown-up stuff.....
  8. I like Hanover frozen veggies too. And since you like their white corn, keep an eye out for Cope's frozen white corn from Lancaster PA. I don't what their distribution area is, but you might be close enough for it to be in a store near you. Yummy stuff, prepared just the way you said, or cooked gently in a pan with a touch of cream and some butter...... wowies!
  9. What a family of sweethearts! I'm way old enough to be your son's....well, way old enough, let's just say .... but I'm already jealous of whoever he ends up with!
  10. This reminds of a time not too long ago (July 15, 2006 6:33 PM) that I was making a Thai dish that was to have about 5 Thai Chilies sliced in the dish. After having a beer or two before starting dinner I found myself having to use the restroom. I finished slicing up the chilies and like a dumb ass I forgot to wash my hands. It took a couple of minutes before the heat started coming on and within 5 minutes my unmentionable was on FIRE!!!! Without going into the gory details it took over two hours for the heat to subside to a managable level. At least our dinner was good. Bob ← I'm guessing you were 'Altoman' at the time?
  11. I don't know-- this doesn't seem to me to be pretentious, just getting really particular about stating that something wasn't actually made in someone's home.
  12. Maybe this is pushing the topic a bit, but I just thought of a movie where something hot is swallowed, but it's not cooked. Oh, and it's ice but it's not cold.
  13. There's been a number of situations lately that I've either witnessed, been told of, or have read about (such as here, of course!) where I believe a well-aimed water pistol could work wonders. Especially if the source of the spray cannot be ascertained.
  14. I guess mine would be Nestle's Toll House chocolate chip cookies. I follow the recipe faithfully, except for portioning out the dough. I get so many compliments on them, and I like them so much myself, that I just don't see any reason to try any other chocolate chip cookie recipe!
  15. You got it buddy! Way to go! (Hubby downloaded this for me and the kids. Our little one was frightened by the effects which are pretty cheesy for these standards today. Still a very enjoyable film). ← Yep! I could picture those scenes right off the bat! I didn't need no stinkin' confirmation!
  16. #161. War of the Worlds!
  17. Count me in too, please! I'm ready for another 'meatarama' round!
  18. I don't know if this counts as a euphemism, but I never understood the point of calling an uncured pig's leg 'fresh ham'. Why isn't it just called pork?
  19. I had occasion to try a bit of marrow--- once! I don't recall what it tasted like; I couldn't get past the greasy texture of it in my mouth! And I don't like undercooked green beans. They don't have to be cooked to mush, but I do want them cooked through. That 'crunchily underdone' texture is NOT cooked, to my taste!
  20. So what's the word for the 24th? Is the latest pizza tour still on?
  21. Perhaps a shepherd's pie, or pasties, for a savory change of pace? Or on the sweet side, chocolate peanut butter pie? Or to be really retro, how about a mock apple pie with the Ritz crackers!
  22. Also tomato sandwiches. ← You bet.... White bread is primarily the vehicle to transport the mayo and summer-ripe, jucy tomatoes to my mouth, while I remain somewhat clean-- usually. It's also the only proper bread for that flattened, grilled cheese sandwich, or a BLT.
  23. OK, so putting up preserves isn't so easy..... But there is freezer jam! Lots easier than dealing with scalding hot jars. Directions are with the pectin. I made a few containers of strawberry jam last year from some tasty strawberries. It was wonderful to pull one out in the middle of the winter. What a taste of summer....
  24. With the attempts of restaurants to promote healthier options, I wonder if part of the problem is pointing them out as such. Are the healthier dishes listed as just another item on the menu, or are they highlighted in some way to draw attention to the possible reason for ordering them? There's other things I was writing down as I read through the posts on this thread, and after reading the original article. There was a mention of restaurants serving the size dishes that they do because that's what people want. There's also the thought that restaurants push these size portions on people. There may not be a specific conspiracy to make people eat more, but I feel it's not as simple as some of the posts on this thread make it seem. A conspiracy, for want of a better word, is not as far-fetched to me as it may have seemed at one time, especially after reading the book 'Mindless Eating.' Oh, and remember those incriminating memos regarding cigarettes? Anyway, here's my thinking on it-- Companies are in business to make money, and to make their shareholders happy. The companies mentioned here happen to be in the food business. Market share has to keep increasing to make them all happy. If the number of people aren't increasing to consume a given product, then the companies have to find some way to increase consumption. If the sales numbers aren't increasing and their customer base is somewhat stagnant, then they have to find a way to make their existing customer base consume more of their product. Hence, bigger plates, bigger portion sizes, etc., and they sell more. Companies may not necessarily be 'out' to make people fat, but if that happens to be a side-effect of selling more of their food, I'll bet they think 'oh, well-- too bad.' Companies are out to sell their product and make money-- they couldn't care less what you do with it after you buy it, or how it affects you, as long as you keep buying it.
