Can I first say by the time an Oregon spring cherry gets to NJ it tastes the same as one from Chile....I keep trying but cherries do nothing for me. But if I see one more oregon apple or even better "produce of USA" apple 25 miles from a NYS orchard I will scream in the store...no one will notice I am sure. Now our local supermarket has some damn good produce, stuff I cant figure out why they have even.... This is a seriously Anglo-American mountain folk town and they so much asian and south american produce.... All that said except for apples I buy on price if green grapes or asparagus are .99 cents a pound in January they can come home with me...the grapes dont actually make it home I eat them in the car. If we were to eat locally in winter what would that mean....old apples, storage onions, ummm pumpkin, potatoes, ok butternut squash that "keeps" right.... winter in most states/provinces is the PITS cherry pits not withstanding T

At the Viking House Restaurant in Hafnafjordur Iceland we were served a traditional Icelandic meal starting with hors' du ouvres.... dried fish, buttered flatbread, smoked salmon, pickled herring, putrid shark,(national holiday dish) and lambs testicals....waitress said " in america you call them Balls no?" all washed down with a double shot of Brennivan carraway schnaaps known as the black death. luckily the entree was roasted lamb with veggies and baked potato before nearly blacking out I remember the words.. no honey ...no ...dont throw up on the table. Icelandic lamb hot dogs are really good though and shrimp and salmon and roasted lamb tracey

What is your own personal "signature dish"?
rooftop1000 replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Most of my parties revolve around pork butt summer its properly done outside winter it goes in the crockpot with a bottle of Franks hot sauce and brown sugar....shred back in the crock with some of the "juice" and bbq sauce. I just love how my family wonders how I get all of Easter dinner on the table hot at one time.... same every year Baked ham, Lasagna, grilled asparagus zucchini eggplant and sweet onions, Grilled spicy leg of lamb....ya should have seen the looks when I said it was time to start the lamb as I pulled out the lasagna the first year.....25 min on the grill people.... the lasagna has to rest....grill and plate veggies on saturday and just reheat in the nuker on the serving plate....lasagna out biscuits in... wish my grandma still cooked she knew how to do all this stuff T -

The best info I could find is that there is 130 grams of Bread flour to 1 cup and 220 grams of Sugar to one cup... pie/crumble topping sound like a good use or add more flour to make a biscuit-like sweet short cake ....like for strawberry shortcake .....can split and top with any berries or peaches or fruit sauce and cream tracey

I usually do my shopping at the West Milford Shoprite which has an amazing produce dept, OK meat, never get deli (I do that for a living) but if you want seafood you have to ring a bell and someone comes over from deli???????? The fish looks fine but I usually just grab a bag of frozen shrimp and be done with it ( raw shrimp NEVER EVER buy frozen cooked shrimp for the love of whoever) If I want real seafood I usually stop at their Ramsey store on the way home....lame produce but great seafood and the bakery is to die for never been even remotely dissapointed in their pastries, donuts etc even used them for catering...better than our usual cake bakery. I cant figure out why the produce dept up here is so good the population seems fairly homogenous and yet they stock some fairly wild carribean and asian produce and there is usually someone there that knows what to do with it. I even managed a lively conversation with the produce guy and some other customers over exactly what is a sweet potato. both are Inserra stores I think.....nice family from Saddle River ...donated an ambulance to the town last year T
