I just remmbered this thread as I sat down with a bowl of pastina with milk and butter...not the really small stuff this is called Acini Pepe I think it means peppercorns. It seems most people put this shape pasta in soup but I always had it for breakfast with milk and butter. I only got a miniscule portion today it seems my daughter has been making it for herself Tracey

Well I just finished mixing up a few batches of cookie dough....oatmeal-applesauce, snickerdoodle, sugar, choc chip, and ruggalach and while putting awy the remains of the New Crisco noticed it has "directions", The lable says that to substitute crisco for butter use 1 cup plus 6 tbls water for each cup of butter or margarine. Now after I already messed with these tried and true, straight out the betty crocker cookie cookbook recipies I thought some of the doughs looked soft already and I was supposed to add Water? Most already said butter or shortning already...Well I didnt add any water ....mmmyyummymmm anyway anyone else try this stuff yet?? Tracey

I havent gotten to try any of those places...only have had them homemade by my ex-MIL whose alternate sunday dinner included a trip to an unknown to me bakery in Newark for "pizza bread" like an italian pita.....pizza dough, hot pepper focaccia, broccoli bread and stromboli all of which were the appetizers BEFORE the Italian hot dogs. and that was a light meal compared to her Gravey Sundays They did talk about Dickie Dee's alot...... T

well I unfortunatley havent been to a bistro in France....not for lack of begging but in the Village how about Chez Jaquelline 72 MacDougal St. Its been 2 years since we wandered in off the street but still a memorable meal 3 of us ( really memorable) Hubby had crab cakes and one of the best steaks he ever had, our 16yr old went for escarots and seared duck breast and I had brandad and the duck also, no wine driving back to NJ right after dinner, no dessert (stopped for ice cream) $95 plus tip. Brandad is just an evil thing how could you sit at a table dreaming about scooping "mashed potatoes" on to bread but with the garlic and cod mingling in there it almost seems like a dip for crostini...mmmmmm hmmm stores are full of salt cod right now arent they Tracey

hi hi When I did the 65 ppl in the backyard wedding I fortunately worked for a gourmet caterer who did chile rubbed pork loins filet of beef and grilled veggies with a room temp orzo dish for me for 600 bucks... but spiral sliced hams, smoked turkeys, quiches, a hot or cold pasta, tossed and fruit salads with great breads and rolls with funky condiments like chutneys relishes flavored mayos.... Quiche for a group is fun to do if ya just make a pitcher of the custardand line up your pie shells with goodies in them ...crab meat plum tomato fresh herbs brie ham swiss bacon cheddar smoked salmon goat cheese carmelized onion...etc DONT FORGET someone to clear plates or throw away plates even if it will be buffet hire at least 2 people even if they are neighborhood teens to clear the tables...and set up....our biggest expense was actually service ....but I actually got a chance to eat, it was nubbins from the end of a beef but i got something tracey

well.... our friends dont cook for me except at massacrees uh I mean BBQs because they all know I can cook or maybe they just dont like us enough to invite inside the house...hmmm but the worst meal I ever had was in Iceland, yes I went to Iceland... had some great food too but... At a touristy "theme" restaurant they served traditional Icelandic cuisine as the appetizer course...smoked salmon, pickled herring, dried fish, buttered flat bread....Ok so far right the juice from the herring got onto the bread, dried fish is well fish jerky, i dont happen to like smoked salmon.... But I digress the rest of the platter contained putrid shark(the national dish) and lambs testicals....the waitress said " you call them Balls?" OK they were the only edible thing on the plate.....all of which was followed by the best roast loin of lamb in the entire free world, baked potaoes with a pinkish sauce that i asked for more of adn dessert of wild blueberries with yoghurt sauce. the restaurant felt our dining room was too quiet for the theme restaurant purpose so they moved a bachlorette party in with us and we all got drunk on carroway schnaaps AKA Brennivan AKA black death going back to Iceland next year if Vietnam falls through

... Gazelle Cafe on Godwin in Ridgewood also does great things with vegetarian...the menu lists the chefs prefered sides, but you can mix and match from the list or order 3 side for ($10) as an entree instead. They also stay away from "simple" starches for Atkins crowd... whole wheat pasta, sweet potato fries, whipped cauliflower.... Whole kitchen is open to the dining room also ...BYOB of course...liquore store few doors up too. T
