Okay, everyone in town has commented on the one word restaurant names - new trend: Physically aggressive names - Crush, Smash, Twist, Twisted Cork, Oliver's Twist. Any others? And, anyone know what's going in just south of Rendevous? Pretty far along, no signs. Lots of fancy lights, kitchen equipment, slate wall. I think Ethan's Italian place is across the street with the Express Construction sign in the window.

Northwest Vegetable Gardening
tsquare replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Cooking & Baking
I finally bought a curry plant this year - specifically to use leaves called for in Indian Home Cooking recipes. It is great - and trying to flower. I clipped them off to promote longevity - not sure if that was appropriate or not. Guess not, as it is considered a "dried flower use" plant - a perennial (in Seattle? We shall see.) Tomatoes! Both from the unmarked orange cherry type and full on red Siletz. Figs - plenty, but some browned early and dropped, for the first time. What's wrong? -
Finally had a waffle at Arosa (Madison, across from Swedish.) Better than what they are selling on the street. Seriously, these are good - and mochas are made with shaved swiss chocolate. (Sandwiches are very good as well.)

In addition to places like Value Village and Goodwill (plenty of glassware and cast-iron, the occassional fish poacher, etc.) the U-district has Hardwicks. You gotta go. Still a swap shop - they have an online presence here (this isn't the swap stuff): too cool

Oh and lunch - Salumi (edge of Pioneer Square) and Baguette Box (not french) onthe edge of Capitol Hill and downtown.
-
It is very nice, too French for John, and too far from downtown for corinnesweeney (originator of thread).

Please tell us more about what you like to eat and how far you want to travel or what area you are staying... Out on Madison - Crush is lovely. New - Purple Wine Bar has opened downtown - haven't tried it, but it looks handsome. Moxie on Queen Anne has lunch and great happy hour prices on food. Won't you try Cremant and tell us it doesn't live up to its hype? Mean, aren't I? Oh, take the ferry from downtown to Bainbridge and try Madoka - Pacific Rim cuisine from one of the originators.

After my experience trying to travel with fine Portland chocolates earlier this month - I understand why they might suspend operations for the month. Those chocolates melt under a stern gaze.

Oh, the old Mallory Hotel, west of 405, has been renovated into the Hotel Delux. Very nice looking. The bar looks great and has a good priced happy hour for food. The restaurant (Gracie's?) is quite formal appearing, but the menu looked good and the chef was the sous at Lucy's Table. I guess that is good? This is close to the Stadium (the older one.) Someone should check this out. The bar especially.

Correct - the Portland Farmer's Market! I stay away from the Saturday Market... Ate the chocolates anyway...not pretty, but good.
-
Quick visit - Park Kitchen was lovely, except that the last of 6 small plates arrived some 1-1/2 hours after the first 3. But we liked the food, location, and feel of the place. Le Pigeon on SE Burnside was fabulous for Saturday brunch. And the Saturday Market was a dream, as always - sorry to have missed Jim. BTW, if you travel to Portland and plan to bring home chocolates from any or all the great places, take a cooler! The I-5 drive home created a serious melt-down. Oh, and our resident cat, who is not a beggar, was very interested in the toasted baguette from Ken's! Two times even.

Lisbon Restaurants: Reviews & Recommendations

Well, if you had stuck to the basics, you might have had a better experience: another view Keep travelling - and eating. -
Eric is back in Portugal and you got to go out with him? I drooled over his past reports...so jealous.

I did this about 10 years ago (from NYC) and loved going up the Hudson River Valley and seeing the light that so inspired painters - but it gets old. Make sure you have some good company, a book, some food...and relax. In Montreal, check out the markets and community gardens. Lovely.

Current price, before tax and tip - $9.95

Wednesday's only, 3-7, walking distance. 6 of the markets

Not even a nice dish of gelato?

This book has made Indian cooking one of my favorite things to eat at home. Every recipe I have tried has been a success. My pantry continues to grow with new ingredients and I planted a curry plant to have fresh leaves. As the book warns - stand back, they pop in the hot oil. Sounds like popcorn though they are skinny string type leaves. Thanks again Suvir.

Had pickled grapes in two different restaurants of late. One was very good.

Early bird special? Have to say the breakfast provided for guests was not good. Didn't make me want to try it for dinner, but did go across the street to the Blue Star for an enjoyable meal. Hope you let us know how dinner goes.
