  1. I have taken a cast iron dutch oven out of the fridge and placed it in a cold oven that was just starting to warm up. I never had an issue doing this. I do not know haw thick your insert is but if you start with a cold cooker they should come to temp together with out too much stress. I would NOT place the insert into the cooker if it was anything above room temp.
  2. Enjoy most of the Sonics are closed here around Atlanta.
  3. Remember?? I have a box of them in storage somewhere. It was sold as the 'home-owner's' size box. It has either 2 or 4 holders and about a dozen cups.
  4. I've always called it egg-in -a-hole. My daughter-in-law calls it YUMMY!!! She say it is a "one eyed sailor" as she heard it in girl scout camp.
  5. YES!!! We eat it as both here. Just depends on how we are feeling here that day. Wife's family is from Virginia and I am Cajun from South Louisiana.
  6. Looks good to me. I guess I know what I'll be making in a couple of days.

    Cooking for one

It's just the wife and I here so we buy meat and vacpac it in single serving portions. I usually wrap each portion and pack several into a large bag. I try to make sure that the bag can be opened a serving removed and the bag resealed. Fruits and vegies we buy what we need. I also keep several kinds of frozen vegies on hand and only cook what we need for the meal. We don't use too many canned things but keep some things on hand.
  8. Fresh Baked. There are too many to choose but I would have say the bread (French loaf) from a small local bakery in the town I grew up in. Bakery is still there but the baker is long passed. His recipe cards were not the same as he baked by. That he kept to himself.
  9. A word on the diamond stones. Use a very light touch, just enough to keep the blade against the stone. They also work better after they have been used a couple of times. Good luck.
  10. Pretty decent pizza can be had at Nick and Nate's Hand Tossed Pizza and Hand Crafted Beer in Waynesville and Silva.
  11. Be careful using the diamond stones. You can ruin both the stones and your knife. Use a VERY light touch. Too much pressure and you'll destroy the stone and still have a dull knife.
  12. I just got these yesterday. clikety thing They will go great with my other knives.
  13. I have to join fatguy on he Bisquick side of the table. I always add extra liquid. This makes a thinner cake and is not as fluffy but more crepe-like. The grandkids like them just fine. I do agree that it makes a great waffle, especially baked on an antique cast-iron waffle iron.
  14. One of my earliest memories about food is standing on a chair at the stove with Dad teaching me to scramble an egg. Growing up in South Louisiana how could I not like food??
  15. I ordered a leather hone from them. It also took about a month but they threw in both a smooth steel and a ceramic steel. Made for a real happy camper. I also keep a ultra-fine diamond "steel" for when the other two need a little help.
  16. Here is a link to Hand America They make several types of Steels, including glass and ceramic. I have a couple of their products and find them well made and good people. I have no interest in this company other than a consumer.
  17. A second vote for the chips.
  18. The wife and I were at that place (or one just like it) for our anniversary dinner few years ago. After entrée’s that would have been at home as part of a tasting menu (My wife’s “wilted spinach with balsamic reduction” was three baby spinach leaves) we left looking for something to eat. I was in San Francisco last year, walking into a restaurant I was met with the unmistakable smells of overflowing toilet and meat that had gone WAY off accompanied by some sort of pine cleaner delicately overlaying the combination. Needless to say I left as soon as the waiter left me at the table.
  19. I had forgotten about those. I had the pleasure of having the original Popeye's,(before they started with the dry coatings). The chicken now is good but then was better. :D
  20. Man, now you got me homesick... I grew up on Bayou LaFourche about 30 miles by air and 90 by road.
  21. Alpharetta is about 12 miles outside of the perimeter north of the Atlanta City proper up GA 400. There is a Whole Foods (Harry's) there as well as several Publix and Kroger’s. There are also several good restaurants as well as several not so good and lots somewhere in the middle. The Varsity has a location here also.
  22. SmokeJack in Alpharetta is a new joint. Kinda upscale for a BBQ place but on the two visits there, lunch time, it's been more than acceptable.
  23. We tried that one here. Make sure to cook the caramel a little longe than you think it needs. Otherwise it turns out too watery. Good flavor. I need to try that one again.
  24. Better= "make you want to slap your Grandmother" I think this comes from slapping hands away from seconds or firsts if you're from a big family.
