  1. Wow, Kris, that was really nice. Of course I'm having trouble coming up with a question due to the fact that the course seemed to answer all of mine. I actually used to be one of those tofu haters, but it was from years ago when the only examples I had were poor ones. Go back fifteen or twenty years in the U.S.--even here in the N.Y. metro area--and Tofu was exotic. I remember only having very bad examples, usually in Chinese restaurants. Soy has come a long way in America, and now it's not that hard to find good examples. So did you go through a Tofu conversion Kris, or were you always a fan?
  2. Even frozen, you can't go wrong with White Castle burgers. Get the ones without cheese though--I don't think the cheese nukes as well.
  3. Larb Pretz? I'm in. Okay, maybe its lucky that one hasn't made its way to the NY/NNJ area. Tommy and Jason would be fighting over the last box.
  4. Yikes. Sorry to put you on the spot Nero, but what about their Pizza do you even like? Unless it's changed recently (I have to admit not having Dominos for many years), it's always tasted like the cafeteria Pizza I recall eating way back in Middle school. As for the wings... not to give Dominos the benefit of the doubt (they don't deserve it), but it does sound like the worst part of the problem might be specific to your Dominos location--they were rewarmed at some point before being delivered to you. They probably cook a whole vat or bucket of them, leave them sitting around, and scoop 'em out and re-warm them at need. Yuck. Since like Tommy it's been about a decade since I subjected myself to Dominos, I haven't tried those "Dots" things either. They sound nightmarish.
  5. What they really need is chocolate covered Pretz. Sort of a "Pocky Pretz".
  6. Yes, as I recall the Pretz were supposed to get their own photo, but you never took it. I've adjusted the title of this topic a bit to make it clearer that this topic is about any Japanese (or possibly even Korean) stick-like cookie or cracker snack. Mmm, Corn Pretz. I really have to stop before I eat the whole box. Those "Decorer" Pockys on that Otaku site seem new.
  7. I saw a "C2" commercial yesterday while channel surfing (a "joy" you TIVO owners miss out on!) The most disturbing thing? The Rolling Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want" as it's theme. More about the coming mammoth C2 "ad push", from AdAge.com The article at least hints that this may be the start of one of the most expensive ad campaigns in history. "Mid-cal" may seem like a joke, but this is huge money and huge news--possibly even moreso if it falls on it's face like "New Coke" did.
  8. Hawthorne is a mere 7 miles from Passaic. They are, in fact, both in Passaic County. So you can report back to us on the taquerias there, since most of our forum reporting on NJ taquerias has been in Bergen County. Although, actually, I just looked it up. Bergen County town Bergenfield--which Jason has given you some hints about--is only 9 miles from Hawthorne.

    "Shrek" M & Ms

Geez, where would you go other than Target for Shrek M&Ms. I mean the connection is OBVIOUS.
  10. I went to a movie earlier and for the first time saw these: Junior Caramels. I know this is an established candy in the U.K. (with the box shown on that website--the "American" Junior Caramels box looks a lot more like the American Junior Mints box), but it's pretty new here. They taste a bit like Sugar Babies--yet a third product from Tootsie Roll Industries--but with the same chocolate coating on the outside as Junior Mints. Elsewhere on eG, we've also recently been talking about Shrek M&M's. Had those today too.

    "Shrek" M & Ms

Got a bag of the Peanut variety today (at Target, of course!). Not bad. They do taste a bit "richer".
  12. It might help if we knew what town you are in David. Don't give your exact address though, just the town name.

    breaking dry pasta

Of course you could just buy better pasta.
  14. Yeah, I just saw this on a schedule. I don't think NBC is even bothering with commercials anymore.
  15. Well it's in a plastic 15 oz. container, with "La Poblanita" across a green, white and red label. It's made in Passaic by: La Poblanita Inc. 353 Passaic Street Passaic, NJ 07055 Ph.: 973-472-0224 So it doesn't seem to be made right in that store, but it's a relatively local product and from the looks of it, not mass produced. The ingredients, in order are: Chile Mulato, Chile Pasilla, Chile Ancho, Chocolate, Azucar, Sugar Cane, Canela, Cinnamon, Ajonjolie, Sesame Seeds, Almendras, Almonds, Manteca, Vegetable Shortening, Semilla De Cilantro, Cilantro Seeds, Spices and Natural Flavorings. Plus the instructions to reconstitute with Chicken Broth (obviously a nice stock works better than crappy bouillon).
  16. El Paso is actually in Englewood, by the way, not Bergenfield like La Batalla and Mi Pueblo.
  17. David Russo's recent inquiry reminded me that I've been back here recently and didn't post about it. I had a perfectly lovely Torta here the night that Saigon Republic had that fire. As I think Jason may have pointed out somewhere, it does indeed appear like they swiped the excellent grill-man from the Mi Pueblo grocery store in Bergenfield. No comparison. Way better. I also have to point out that they SELL the Mole, and I bought some. I've been doling it out for weeks--it reconstitutes with chicken broth.
  18. Andrew Levinsky is entranced by a Cult. Read the ravings of the new High Priest of the Cult of Tea, here . . . --------------------------------------------------------------------- Be sure to check The Daily Gullet home page daily for new articles (most every weekday), hot topics, site announcements, and more.
  19. Is that like The O.C.? Okay, minus the jokes I'm sure we've done a variant of this question before. We're looking for an affordible restaurant, with non-sucky food, which can hold a fair sized party. Maybe we need a little more. Are we looking for any particular TYPE of food? Also, which meal--lunch, dinner or maybe brunch?
  20. Were they from one of the major Indian-influenced peoples of Nepal? Nepalese who actually lived in India as some intermediary step? Or are they simply identifying themselves with India for the convenience of American sensibilities? It's funny. You know who appears to have the most complete ethnicity/tribal information on Nepalese on the web? Missionaries. They've actually got the ethnic/tribal breakdowns with "conversion" statistics. eGullet's own Ellen Shapiro (aka- "Mrs. Fat Guy") knows a LOT about this area, and a decent amount about their food, so hopefully she sees this. Her DOG is named Momo. Theoretically this topic perhaps should go in eGullet's Elsewhere in Asia forum.
  21. And why would porkiness make it weird? As I said, Molé Poblano + Pork Chops = Good eating. It's not weird at all. What's weird is putting SUGAR on Pork--real OR fake. Molé has certainly got SOME sugar in it, but it's a bit down the list of ingredients, and I can't even imagine wanting to taste Malitol on Pork.
  22. I suppose we can arrange a merge. No need for two topics when one will do. EDIT - done. the two topics are one. But the link is broken now. Ha ha, I get it. If you'd like I can go edit beans' post (it's past her edit window, so she can't do it herself anymore) and adjust the link so it comes right back here in a big circle like it should. I just don't like editing user's posts for no good reason.
  23. Pop culture tends to portay beer as part of a culture of excess. Homer Simpson drinks Duff until his stomach distends. Reality isn't always that different. Beer is the only alcoholic beverage where people can get special glasses that are the size of a Big Gulp, or go to bars where they can stick their faces under a running tap (it's a college age thing). College students are also supposed to drink the cheapest possible example by the caseload or worse yet, the kegload. It's folly to battle pop culture, but I'm wondering for the connoisseur of beer, how much beer do you actually drink? How much beer SHOULD you drink? What are the reactions of a true beer connoisseur to the popular notions about beer--amusement, tolerance, disgust, frustration? Does the realm of the beer connoisseur exist completely apart from beer guzzling, or is there some logical intersection?
