  1. Look what happens when you can't even wait to finish page 6 before posting! ninetofive's post (#180) talks about cyanide poisoning. She seems to be more adventurous than me... Does anyone know if stone fruit pit liqueur will kill me? I can't wait to read pages 7 & 8. Never before has following an egullet thread provided a cliffhanger like this! This is better than TV! (To the eGullet PR department: Feel free to use my glowing endorsement (above) in future promotional materials.)
  2. I've got to bring this topic out of hibernation!!! I'm trying to get organized for when the fresh fruit gets here. (How very Martha of me, considering the 7 feet of snow covering everyone's lawns in Montreal!) I've been inching my way through the thread (and tho I'm only up to page 6!) I haven't seen much talk about stone fruit pit infusions. I think someone mentioned trying out cherry, but I don't recall seeing what the results were. I'm curious about fruits like peaches, apricots, and plums. Does anyone have any thought? Thanks to everyone who posted the results of their experiments!
  3. Your cult has claimed another one! How could I not join, when the ebay vanilla prices are so low! I can't wait to get started...
  4. Has anyone heard anything good/bad/indifferent about the Atelier Pierre Herme classes? I'm thinking of signing up for one, but it's a whole lot of money, so I'd like to be sure it's worth it! Thanks!
  5. Does anyone know where I can get (moulded) chocolate making supplies in Montreal? It's all a grand experiment and I'm starting from scratch, so any pointers will help! Thanks!
  6. Criklewood - I wish I could have gone to that event, but I had to work! I'm glad to know you enjoyed it; I'll be sure to look out for it next year. I had the Degel again this weekend and I think I'm developing a crush. I'm looking forward to bringing it to a BYOB restaurant this weekend. I go through phases with favorite foods, looks like a have a new one!
  7. If I lived in Seattle instead of Canada, she'd be getting nothing but homemade meals for weeks! And that's what I was hoping to give instead of the standard baby gift! What you say is SO what I want to give, not a crappy gift basket! (I appologize to gift basket vendors everwhere! There is a place and a time for all kinds of gifts!) Hey Seattleites! Can you recommend places I could order from online or by phone that would deliver goodies to my friend? Thanks for helping a girl who only knows from Singles and Space Needle!
  8. I'm looking for a gift for my girlfriend who is about to become a new mom. (All together now, awwwwwww!) I looked at blankets, and onesies, and picture frames, and blankets. But won't my girl get this all from other people? (Moms, please correct me if I'm wrong on this! I just want to give something useful!) Does anyone know of a REALLY good gift basket company? Baskets can be hit or miss, and I would never want to send a bad one! My friend lives in the States so eventhough I live in Canada, I'll want a company that at the very least will ship there. Cheers y'all!
  9. Has anyone tried this? It's the second pressing of the apples they use to make the good stuff. It has 12% alcohol, which I think is lower than the original cider. It does have good flavor, mind I'd like to try the two side by side for a proper comparison. Oh yeah, the Degel is just $11. Eleven bucks!
  10. I'm curious to hear what other bakers have to say about this. I've been tempted to buy them - so many pretty colours!!!
  11. Thanks so much, prasantrin! I really appreciate being given a great head start! Cheers!
  12. I'm not sure if I am posting this in the appropriate forum. Sorry if I have... I've heard about people who host private dinners in their homes and I'm considering doing this myself. What I'm considering is a small operation, like a secret restaurant. I believe there was a lot of buzz about a kid doing really avant garde molecular tastings in his dorm room... Naturally, now that I'm interested, a quick google search yielded no pertinent results If any of you can recall hearing about such an operation, can you please let me know about it, either here or by PM? I appreciate anything our collective memories can turn up!
  13. Thanks for the recommendation. Will definitely check it out. I am also a porkophile!
  14. I made David Chang-style Pork Buns for a friend's party. The pork came out great but the store-bought buns I bought left a lot to be desired. Live and learn...
  15. I actually went to that grocery in Chinatown last night and, no, I don't think they speak either language. I kept asking the guy the weight of the piece in English and French and got no response. No matter, I got my pork! Thanks for you help guys! -Porkelle
  16. Hi all! I need to know how to ask my butcher for pork belly ASAP! Also, does anyone know if Berkshire pork is available in Montreal? Thanks!
  17. FG - You should come to Montreal! Aside from being 'hot' in the foodie world, it's also what I coming to believe is the Munchos Capital Of The World! Ever since you started this thread I've been noticing Munchos EVERYWHERE... which is weird since other Canadian posters have said they can't find them. There's even an empty bag that's been kicking around the parking lot of the factory where I work for at least a week now! You may also be interested to learn that Quebecers have a really interesting / bizarre relationship to their potato chips. We get the most bizarre limited edition flavors - BBQ Chicken anyone? But I guess that's a discussion for a whole other thread!
  18. Thanks for the recommendation, Snackhappy! I've been meaning to eat at Chez L'Epicier; I always pass it on the way from the parking lot to Le Club Chasse Et Peche! My veggie friend really enjoyed his meal - tho I forget what it was right now... They 'made it up' on the spot because the yummy-sounding menu on their website is out of date and the new one does not feature a vegetarian dish. I liked the look of the menu that's on their website right now. The new one not so much. The food was good and we enjoyed good, moderately priced wine, and reasonable service, but I feel very fortunate to have had the benefit of extremely good company! I guess a mixed review, but perfect for my particular situation. Yay for me!
  19. Remember the Gazette article a few weeks ago about cocktail lounges in Montreal? Me too. I clipped it with a mind to save it... and then promptly recycled it. Now I'm thinking: No matter what the author of the article thought, where do you lot go for a stellar cocktail? Bonus points: Why can't you find Pimm's at the SAQ? Can I get a Pimm's cup in any known bar? kthxbai!
  20. Man, I love you guys! This site is fantastic and I don't post as much as I should, but this thread is worthy! I am a Jelly Belly FREAK! In fact, upon reading this thread I sent my boyfriend a text saying "Take me to Sugar Heaven or lose me forever". Sugar Heaven is one of those bulk places here in Montreal. Bonus: If you can name the movie quote, there's a kilo of virtual Jelly Bellys (or is it Bellies?) in it for you! I have so many favorites, but the Strawberry Daiquiri was my favorite as a kid. It was total forshadowing of a boozy young adulthood! I'll never forget the time I asked the girl behind the counter for 100 grams of Strawberry Day-queer-ee. She rudely corrected me, but I ask you, what sort of proper 10 year old knows how to pronounce Daiquiri?
  21. I want to take some friends out someplace good but one of them is a total veggie. The guy won't even touch fish. Does anyone know of a nice place - I'm hoping for Old Mtl - that will accomodate the dude? Thanks!
  22. Your guests are in for a real treat!
  23. cricklewood - Thanks for responding so quickly... Maybe we can compare notes when I've done a little more work? ruby
  24. Cricklewood, Thanks for your reply. I really don't mean to sound ungrateful or anything, but do you have that link handy for the gouvernement du quebec site that has the questionnaire you were referring to? It sounds like a great place to start... To be honest, I have yet to search for it, but the gov't websites tend to be difficult to navigate, while concealing a wealth of info... Thanks so much to everyone who responded (and to anyone else who can help!) Ruby
