  1. The Jingle Inn. Little place off of 46 on the other side of China 46. Consistently excellent sushi, as well as other 'cooked' items.

    Lorena's

Received an Excellent NYT Feb. 26
  4. I don't know if it qualifies as a neighborhood place...but Blu is very good. Eperney is also very good. Dai Kichi is a neighborhood Sushi place...it is okay. On many of these..do believe the hype.
  5. Dinner and jazz perhaps in Newark and Montclair..if still open: Trumpets in Montclair and the Priory in Newark.
  6. Ever since Mr. Brunos Pizza..the very best square Sicilian Pie ever..closed due to relocation..we tried Foschinis. It is good..not great, but good. We have only ordered their regular pie with toppings, and it is good. It ain't Mr. Bruno's, but it is the second best we have found around Rutherford.
  7. Scuttlebutt's Pub Nutley I heard the chef here is from somewhere fancy (I don't remember), and that the food is quite good....does anyone know??
  8. Good thread idea!! Mexicali Blues, Teaneck NJ Not for the food, for the live music!

    Blu

Had dinner last night at Blu. We ordered the Mahi encrusted with sesame and ginger sauce, Maine Monkfish, and the Chatham Cod. We had the risotto as an app, and choc. w/banana ice cream as dessert. The Risotto was perfection. Just perfection. The Mahi..delicious. The Monkfish was good..but missing something..I don't know what, but something. A little bland for my taste. My friend said the same thing about the Cod, and upon tasting I agreed. It is so subtle as to what is missing, and it certainly is a good dish, but needs a little umph..IMO. The dessert and coffee, always great. We arrived at 8:00, with a reservation, but waited 20 minutes or so for a table. Service has been better. The waiter seemed rushed to go home..which he did, mid dinner. The second waiter seemed a little happier to be helping us...not bad, just not up to par.
  10. So that is what happened to Tumptin. It was awful last time I went..never to go back again.

    Blu

Based on the NY Times review I will check this place out but based on the photos, the food looks a little sloppy. But as long as the flavor is there its worth a try I guess. You are kidding, right?
  12. There must be a computer in the restaurant....when I was a server, years ago, it was one of our duties...like refilling the salt & pepper. One of us had to type the specials and copy them. We were given the list by the chef, with descriptions, and that was that.
  13. I told a friend of mine the other day (who is Jewish) that there aren't any good Chinese Restaurants in my immediate area...with all seriousness he told me that perhaps I should move I understand exactly what Jason is talking about...no big deal...the only debate is if the food sucks or not.

    China 46

Tommy, as usual, hit it right on...it is just good business to offer another bowl of rice w/out charge to regular customers. When I waited tables a free drink to a good customer went a long way, and cost the restaurant pennies. A bowl of rice cost pennies, brown or white. China 46 offers an Americanized menu as well as its "Chinese" menu. Both menus are offered with a choice of brown/white rice. Being that this restaurant is in NJ, in the USA, catering to us non Asian folk as well as Asian folk might be wise. Each and every time we have gone, there are Asians and non Asian folks enjoying their food.

    China 46

We have become somewhat regulars here..going a couple times a month or so. The last time we went I was disappointed by something that is rather small, but we found annoying. Tom and I always order brown rice with our meals. The serving is unusually small, and we always get one extra bowl each. This time they charged us for rice. I asked why, and he tried to explain how he legitimizes charging for a bowl of rice..I didn't listen in all honesty...in my mind, there is no good explanation for charging for a small bowl of rice, we all know what rice costs. Come on now...the owner sees us in there all the time. We bring friends often. Have a little respect for those who patronize your restaurant on a regular basis. Aside from the fact that we have found the food to be a little greasier as of late, we are now turned off by a very small but irksome fee. We will try Sesame tonight.
  17. Who says no to free dessert offered by the Chef?? It would be in bad taste. Ummm...no...I don't eat free desserts...what would one say? Gary said he loves egullet, and that it has helped out the restaurant a lot. He wanted to buy a member of egullet dessert. WHO says no?? My first post on this thread was prior to free dessert. Quite trustworthy, being prior to my being bribbed with sugary treats. My goodness....It was just dessert.
  18. My friend and I had dinner here last night...my second time. We had the escargot appetizer which was yummy, the Rich/Poor man which was also yummy, the Snapper which was good, not as good as the above, and when telling Chef Gary, who was saying hello to the tables that we heard of the restaurant through egullet, he bought us dessert which was to die for....Baked Alaska and a Port Wine Sorbet with berries. Delicious. Chef Gary also sat with us a bit and told us of his experiences as a chef....he does bbq too! Altogether a lovely night. Thank you!

  20. I think the scientific community goes with the locigal assumption that if you take away a toxic substance, the person exposed to the toxic substance will fare better. No study needed. The question of whether it is toxic or not is at issue..not if withdrawn will one do better. Once something is proved to be toxic, it would be unethical to continue to expose humans to the substance in the name of science. Daniel....science wins on this one. In the same vain, if society knows of a toxic substance, it would be unethical to continue to expose humans to the substance. But of course you will come to your own conclusions. Good luck with that.
  21. Daniel, you now have two studies to interpret on the negative effects of second hand smoke. It is scientific...not really up for debate. Just as smoking is bad for you..not really up for debate. I am sure you too can find all the studies you are looking for in a google search. Just make sure the tobacco industry is not the author.
  22. A new University of Minnesota study finds that nonsmokers who work in bars and restaurants that allow smoking have higher levels of nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals in their bodies on workdays than when they're not working. Researchers found that nonsmoking employees had up to 25 times more nicotine in their urine on workdays than on other days. The co-director of the university's tobacco research center said the same employees had up to four-and-a-half times higher levels on a chemical associated with a cancer-causing toxin on days that they worked. They study found that even on their days off, the employees had higher levels of the toxin than people who don't work around secondhand smoke. The study is published in the new issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.
  23. I was in college when I worked as a server...before the ban obviously. I have not worked in a restaurant for many, many years. Thankfully. I also choose not to go to restaurants that allow smoking. IMO it interferes with everything, from the food to the ambience..and of course those pesky health issues.
  24. I worked as a server for many years in a NYC. I had upper respitory issues throughout. My doctor told me to stop smoking...I didn't smoke. Second Hand smoke is hazardous to others. Period.
  25. How is it that an owner of an establishment should have a freedom of choice to allow poison to harm his/her customers? That is not a legal choice. It is against the law to knowingly hurt people with toxins....cigarette smoke is toxic. Absolutely no doubt about that. Why is this a discussion?? It is only the financial issue here that is at the heart of this discussion, not freedom of choice etc. It is the financial hit owners may feel. There is no question as to the issue regarding the health of the partons and workers. Cigarette smoke is Toxic. Scientific fact. So the notion of health vs. money becomes the only issue here folks.
