  2. Had dinner the other night in Montclair at Trattoria Rustica. Not inspiring at all. Okay food. Nothing special. Typical red sauce place. Shame. Has anyone eaten at Assaggini Di Roma in Newark?
  3. I heard the news as well and am very upset. I too feel bad for local folks without transportation. The store is/was needed in this town, and it is a shame that we are losing it. A drag that I have to now drive to Lyndhurst to buy what was easily purchased walking down the street.
  4. I have had pies from Brooklyn Pizza and Foschini's. They are comparable, but something about the Brooklyn pie is better in my opinion. However, no waits at Foschini's. When given the choice, we always get the square pie from Mr. Bruno's....but of course totally different style. Foschinis is decent enough though, and worthwhile. We like JoJo's as well...exactly as described, big, cheesy and good. Tommy is right about take out of the thin pies...something gets lost if not eaten very quickly.
  5. We like Mr. Bruno's in Lyndhurst for their square pie. Their regular pie ain't bad either, but their square pie is really good. They make decent red sauce italian fare as well. They were closed for renovations of the strip mall they are in, and reopened with waiting lines out the door. Crazy. They are in the mall with TJ Max.
  6. Thank you very much for that breakdown, Bob. We will be arriving Saturday night, not Friday..my mistake. We will be ordering take out, as I will have a pup with me. Any Chinatown favorites? Any other Italian choices in the area? You gotta love egulleters for their generosity of time and palate.
  7. Thank you for your suggestions. We will need to find a meal for Friday evening. Is this area a business district that caters to weekday lunches? Are there any other decent restaurants that have take out in the area? Thank you again.
  8. Hello, We need help in finding a decent take out Italian or the like near the Hotel we will be staying at in Philadelphia. We do not know the city at all. We are staying at the Marriot Courtyard at 21 Juniper Street. All help will be most appreciated. Thank you. Tom

    Rutherford

Agreed...we go there all the time and really enjoy it. The chicken kabob sandwich, the falafel and hummus, even the chicken burger and fries...all quite good and the owner is a nice guy.
  10. chicken and eggs are probably right out, then. mass produced chickens live in deplorable conditions. ← Yes, Tommy, you are correct, they are in deplorable conditions. Animals could be raised in a more humane way. They Are being raised in more humane ways. That is why many stores are only buying from cageless farms. It is a good thing to promote cruelty free poultry etc. It is possible, and idealy, if one can afford to do so, we should all be more thoughtful in our purchases.
  11. should the government ban veal, then Yes. They should. They should ban cruelty to any animal for the sake of glutteny or entertainment. For the record it is not silly to have convictions for the prevention of cruelty to animals. I never speak out about any of this as this is a site about food. It is indeed the elephant in the room. This thread and some of the comments are so insensitive to animals that I am saddened.
  12. Menton speaks the truth. Proof that the animal is suffering? My goodness what blinders we humans can put on when we want something that invariably hurts others. Do we need proof that a calf is suffering in a cage unable to move until it is slaughtered? Does the animal have to write a letter explaining their pain? Geese naturally graze, they do not force feed themselves. Scientific proof? Just watch the process and the proof is pretty obvious. Amazing!
  13. Your right, animals suffering is funny stuff. It is always funny to see animals suffer for our entertainment or gluttony. Watching calves in cages so small they can't move...funny stuff. Force feeding animals, always a laugh. How do you know they are suffering...gee, I don't know. Only humans really suffer pain I guess. The rest of the animal world have no feelings or ability to feel pain.
  14. We tried the new Turkish rest. in Carlstadt the other night. It is decent. We had the Eggplant salad, Tabouli, and a Chicken kabob. All very tasty. The atmosphere is nice, service good. My only complaint would be the size of the app's. I usually go to Betyi Kabob in Union City, and am spoiled by the generous portions. However, the authenticity of taste was equal.
  15. There is a new Kabob restaurant in Carlstadt on Hackensack Ave. It is Turkish I believe. Opened a week or so ago. Big space, across from Sal Anthony's Italian rest. which expanded a month or so ago. Will try it soon. In Rutherford, there is the Turkish rest. opening and a Gyro place opening. Odd so many middle eastern places in such a small area. Rutherford already has Eros and Athens, both mediocre. Hope these are better.
  16. The fact that it is not a feature dish is not a good excuse for poor execution..period. If it is on the menu, do it well, otherwise don't bother. Your photos are very good...good execution. And your reviews are very good, very convincing. The two combined are a hard sell indeed.
  17. Okay..maybe I am a sucker for the hard sell...the tasty photos, the good reviews. We went here again last night thinking we would give it three chances...one time was good, one wasn't..this was the clincher. Did a 'chinese' search and saw the photos and read the reviews and thought maybe I am missing something. No, unfortunately, no. I ordered a staple dish...chicken w/mushrooms. It was mediocre. One big button mushroom cut up with some chicken, snow peas & carrots. It is only my opinion, but my goodness, how is this place deserving of photos? In fact, how are many of the places deserving that have the photos and stellar reviews worthy?? Is it me? Do we lower the bar in NJ? Do I just not get it?? I have visited many of the photo op restaurants as of late, and have been amazed at the mediocrity of the food, ambiance, & service. The whole package. Please, stop with the hard sell unless it is really stellar!
  18. Wow, thank you for that thread. We will have a car part of the time. We are not meat eaters, but fish, poultry, and almost all cuisines are good. Thanks again.
  19. Hello All, We will be visiting your gorgeous city in September and will be staying in Kitsilano. Hoping for recommendations in the area, as well as throughout the city. Boyfriend is not a foodie...but I am. Coming from NYC, so don't need fancy, just good! Thanks in advance. Joana
  20. Hello Rachel, Unfortunately it closed I heard of a place from my Peruvian clients in WNY, but I never tried it and would have to do come searching for the name.
  21. We ate here last night and I was a bit disappointed. As mentioned earlier, I frequented a Peruvian Restaurant quite frequently in Union City. This restaurant was poor in comparison. I had the mussels which were okay, but not as fresh tasting or as tasty as I have had in the past. My partner had the rotiserrie chicken which was mediocre at best. The menu was not as typical as I expected...no Halea...fried array of fish with corn, onions, and the like. At least I did not see it listed. I will not return.

    Lemon ice

The Lyndhurst Pastry Shop on Ridge Road, right next to the Kingsland NJ Transit station, does a fantastic lemon ice, zest bits and all. I can't speak for the pastries, but the line has been long these hot nights. I can speak for the pastries...very good!! I buy their Biscotti often to give to business liasons....leaves them happy
  23. I went to La Isla recently and it was good, but you are right, not as good as it used to be. On Bergenline, no where imparticular. We used to get takeout from the cafeteria around the corner kind of thing, and in our opinion, as good as Rebecca's. Perhaps someone else has a favorite as I don't get around there much anymore.
  24. We went years ago..when it was all the rage. We were shocked by the level of the food (typical Cuban..nothing special) and the prices they were asking..also the tip in cash issue. Both my friend and I agreed that the food in any typical Cuban cafeteria on Bergenline Ave. was equatable. The atmosphere certainly isn't, but the food is. I would go to La Isla in Hoboken for Cuban hands down.
  25. I have been to this restaurant as well...Nitayya. It was okay...do yourself a favor and try Wondees or Brookside...no comparison in my opinion.
