  1. the kids loved the soup, not so much the cheese crisp

shaya I have never heard of kids liking soup and not crispy cheese!

dinner from the last few nights

Sunday Dayne picked up mussels from the farmers market and we did them up with some bacon and shallot sauce. served with baguette and salad also from said market

then last night we had fondue with baguette and french country ham. cornichons on the side. rhone wine in the glass

  2. I made carnitas last night for a potluck at work. I don't have an oven right now so I did them following Jaymes recipe in my le crueset on the stovetop and then finished them on a baking tray under the broiler. They were very good, very tender and flavorful. I put a bit of bacon fat on the baking tray to give them a little extra to fry in since I couldn't render as much as I wanted via roasting.

  3. Sandy how cool that you will be visiting us!! Once you get downtown on the bus the main core is a ride free zone which can be handy if you want to travel around between the south end (ID/Pioneer Square) and the northend (Beltown) with Pike Place being about middle.

Happy Hours are such a great way to eat around on the cheap. We love Union's, Cascadia (mini prime burgers and salmon burgers!), Brasa (hit or miss service but good food), BOKA and Vessel (mini croque monsieur!)

I do hope we'll get a chance to meet you while your here!

  4. Wendy, looks like Shaya is not the only one showing off   can I rent Dayne to cook for me while I go shopping?

 Chufi, he is good like that!

This afternoon I'm trying Food & Wine's "undated coq au vin" their "zesty braised chichen with lemon capers"  April 2007 Page 76.

I was reading that article too- so what did you think Jmahl??

markk I don't care who made it, the stuffed turbot looks divine!

  5. Ok, this thread inspired me.  I was sauteeing my chicken thighs for arroz con pollo last night and after I'd browned the skin side, I flipped them and removed the skin.  Finished browning the thighs and used them in the casserole (the skin usually gets soft when cooke with the rice, so we didn't miss it).

I took those skins and continued sauteeing them until I had cracklings and then salted them.  Served them with side cars and my husband and I were in crackling heaven.

YUM!!! sounds even better than the fried garbanzo beans!

  6. I used FoodMan's recipe to make my first ever falafel today and served it to Dayne's dad and uncle. I've actually only even had it twice before. This was very good and everyone loved it!

    after the grind

I made quenelles using 2 spoons

    432703352_68477a8914.jpg

served them warm with warm pita, israeli salad and tahini sauce

I assume serving them warm is the way to go but do people eat them room temp also??

thanks for coming up with such a good cook off! this is a keeper for sure!!

  7. The cook tending to his risotto - he's sitting up in Mom's "risotto stool"

  8. It's a total cave. Here in Seattle there are more than a few restaurants who only serve organic sustainable food- but they don't make huge statements about it or send letters or "ban" other foods. They just do what they do.

I agree with pansophia- stop making my dining decisions. I'm grown up enough to make my own. If you want to get kick backs by making grandiose speaches and statements have at it....but my dining dollars will go to others who make their own choices!

  9. MiFi those look good, what kind of fish do you use and is there maple in the cakes or the beans?

jende have fun with your book!

sadistick all looks yummy! especially the smoked salmon with caviar!

  10. polenta al sugo (might not be pretty but is very tasty!) served with a chianti we brought back from tuscany and followed by amareti (sp) cookies from florence

  11. I've got an office potluck next week that I'd like to contribute to but it has to be something that can hold- no ovens at work so mac n cheese, gratin, ect are out. I'm thinking chili in the crockpot but what else?? must not be too adventuresome.....what are your biggest potluck hits?

  12. I love loco moco!! yum! do you serve it in a bowl or a dish?? I like it in a bowl!

tonight we made octaveman's mongolian beef! it was great!! served simply over rice. the beef was sooooo tender! thank you

  13. One photo that I did not get that I really wanted was of the woman selling live frogs. She was one of the few who refused when I asked if I could photograph her or her frogs even after I offered her a tip.

doc do you always ask permission when taking photos? I have found that I generally don't unless someone is looking at me rather particularly....and I always wonder about professional bloggers, if they ask or not.

  14. Nishla that looks like a spectacular meal!!

we had Normandy chicken tonight- chicken breasts cooked in apples, onions, cognac and brut hard cider. served with some fresh carrots, zuchini and peas and mashed potatoes with marscopone cheese. excellent! I'm not feeling well so while dayne had a glass of red I had a rhubarb Dry Soda which was really tasty with it!
