  1. I've eaten at Union twice and although the food is outstanding, service on the other hand is questionable.

Really?? how so? I've had fantastic service- professional, warm, attentive. My husband has an alergy we always alert restaurants to and Union goes out of the way asking questions to make sure things are good.

  2. Loved our time in Newport! What a charming town! We were staying at the Castlehill Inn so we ate a very nice dinner there one night and had a great lobster meal at Scales and Shells (or is it Shells and Scales??) the next.

Had a huge selection of fried goodies at Flo's and some not very inspired lunch items at Rhode Island Quohog.

    Thanks for the recommendations!

  3. LMF, given how much you post about cocktails, my first suggestion would be Eastern Standard in Kenmore Sq (not super far from the end of Newbury St).  It's casual, good food and great drinks.  We almost always eat at the bar

Nishla, thank you for the ES recommendation, we went after dinner last night and had a fabulous time with Tom (he says hi!!) really great drinks and what a list- Jackson gave us a menu. perfect recommendation- I owe you next time you are in Seattle!

  4. ann thanks!! a friend of mine was talking about confit "quick style" and I had a major craving too!

tonight- night before vacation, so officially vacation now!- we started with a Floridita Cocktail (followed by a few other cocktails....)

    534101016_78431116d4.jpg

then we made Jamaican Jerk Chicken, fried plantains and cuban salad (iceberg-pinapple-avacodo-red onion)

(speaking of vacations, you are more than welcome to check out our new blog Luggage Tag- link in my signature)

  5. You might want to check out the new Snoose Junction Pizza in Ballard (on Market Street). They do pizza by the slice, as well as by the pie, and it reminds me very much of Ray's Pizza in New York. Extremely tasty and satisfying -- thin but chewy crust, aggressively spicy red sauce, and the perfect cheese in a nice golden web across the top. The pepperoni is fab, too.

Snoose Junction also has a very homey, neighborhood feel -- like a Brooklyn pizza joint. Perfect place to drop in for a beer and a couple hot slices.

we've been wanting to check this out, thanks for the write up!

  6. nice report back faine, thank you!

We will be in Boston for 1 night, 1 day only- dinner is at No. 9 Park but are looking for a lunch spot on Friday. We are staying at the W waterfront and will be checking out the new modern art museum as well as doing a bit of shopping on Newberry. Any great casual lunch suggestions that are easy to get to from any of these locations? we'll be leaving town around 4pm......

Summer Shack doesn't sound like it is near where we will be??

  7. we've been before but took out of town friends on saturday- fantastic! We had about a 30 min wait at 8:30. Took our drinks upstairs and hung out on the couch.

Dinner was fabulous including fried polenta with a bagna cauldo sauce (sp), homemade mozzerela with pecan butter on baguette, gorgeous asparagus soup with tuna confit on top, gnocchi ala romano, another pasta I can't remember and a HUGE pork chop! could manage another bite so we had to forgo the zeppole this time........

  8. Last night I made medianoches and had chips and pico with them.  For the filling I used carnitas.

YUM!! rocky those look awesome! much better looking than the ones I made last weekend!!

  9. We'll be in Newport next week for a few days, staying at Castle Hill Inn and plan to have one dinner there. Where else should we eat- not necissarily high end- just good and local! What to seek out in Newport? lobster? clams?

    Thanks!!

  10. Wendy - this is so odd - I just last night bookmarked the Jacques Pepin recipe for Gnocchi Parisienne in some magazine (F&W?) to make soon. How were they - as easy as promised?

KIM: yes very easy! we used duck eggs cause that is what we had so ours are a big yellow-er in color. I also drizzled some olive oil on top, I've made another similar version baked in a gorgonzola cream sauce. I just love them as a side! I think you should make them soon so we can compare!!!

  11. Here is our dinner tonight.  We had a delayed Memorial Day BBQ, since we hung out with friends last night.  We started off with a little cheese and sourdough bagettes.  I was inspired because of you all here (food blogs, etc.) to try some new cheese, and tried the Beechers which I really liked.  The other cheese was also very good too.

Beechers is made here in seattle, we love it too!!!

Here's the five course dinner I made on Sunday.  Sorry for the horrible quality of the pictures; I am currently without a good camera, so a phone camera had to suffice.

rwsweet that whole meal looks awesome, I would love if someone made that for me! very nicely done!!

And here´s tonight´s dinner! Come on, people, we need more dinners on the Dinner thread!

    gallery_21505_2929_35662.jpg

It´s sheep! or let´s call it mature lamb.. anyway it´s delicious, very tender and even the layer of fat was delectable.

we had veal chops purchased from our farmers market- oven roasted with rosemary, garlic, evoo- pan deglazed with vermouth fo a sauce. also green salad and gnocchi parisian

I gotta say it was all tasty!!

  12. The jackfruit soup started out as this Breadfruit Vichyssoise.  It turns out that you can't actually get breadfruit here, so I used canned green jackfruit, which is supposed to be a substitute.  The habanero was too much except for a tiny portion, and the jackfruit itself was basically flavorless.  Plus, the soup was a hideous khaki color.

Here's the Cream of Ginger with Lemongrass Soup.  I strained it and used the remaining lemongrass and ginger solids, ground up with some lime leaves, to make a little marinade for the shrimp, which I added because the soup is rather plain.  It was mild and delicate, and could have used a little more lemongrass.

The fritters were West African Banana and Chile Fritters.  I tweaked these a lot, adding more chile, a LOT more salt, and after frying up a test one, a small heap of baking powder.  They need a dipping sauce, and I used a red pepper jam made by a friend.

thanks abra, sorry about the coconut thing- I did think it was in there! I am definately making that soup- yummy!

  13. Abra was back up with a soup of lemongrass and ginger which was soooo good, she also sauteed some shrimp in garlic for a garnish.

    IMG_2558.jpg

This looks/sounds amazing. Is it a coconut milk base (like a tom kha gai), or something else entirely?

If abra is around I'm sure she'll jump in but I do remember her saying it was coconut based I believe

  14. some fellow food enthusiasts got together for our quarterly French cook together but this time we decided to include French colonies. Printempts Deux:

Abra made banana jalenpeno fritters with a red pepper dipping sauce

    IMG_2544.jpg

LEdlund made duck liver pate and her Mr. made a fabulous cocktail also called Printemp!

    IMG_2545.jpg

Then we sat- 14 at the table - and started the meal!

I made roasted shallot custard for the amuse bouche

    IMG_2548.jpg

Seagal made a fabulous poisson cru with home fried taro and other chips (sorry I can't remember the 2 other types but they were awesome!)
