As a young kid i went to my cousins play at Princeton.. After the play we all went to Conte's Pizza.. I havent been back since but have such an incredible memory of this pizza . Whats the story with this place, is it as good as I remember? Or should I let it live in my memory.

Wow Slkinsey, That website is awesome.. It has a great breakdown of all their cold cuts.. Currently constructing Wednesday nights sandwich in my head..

Went to Schaller and Weber for the first time this weekend On 85th and 2nd. I was driving up to my girlfriends country house with plans to bbq.. Besides the normal ribs and bacon wrapped turkey I wanted to grab something different.. I have been pleased with there products in restaurants and buying them at grocery stores.. I must start out by saying the entire experience was truly professional.. They have old school butchers behind the counter who are more then happy to walk you through the process.. I bought raw brats and something they said were like hot dogs.. I also bought raw ribs, saukraut, pickled herring in cream sauce, licorious,. pickles, rolls, mustards, and some german cheese.. Everything was outstanding.. Really loved the pickles, excellent herring, outstanding brats.. I didnt go crazy because I promised myself i would be back.. Would love to hear some recommendations as to what else to order.. I have my eye on their bacon.. excellent german potato salad too!

So we arrived for our 8 o clock reservation.. We are met with indifference by a girl wearing jeans and messy shirt.. We are walked through an empty restaurant and seated in a narrow section directly next to another table.. Odd but, i was thinking the restaurant will fill up shortly.. I later find out that I was wrong, only two more tables arrive that evening and they were seated directly on top of us.. The way the restaurant works is you pay 85 dollars and then you are then in the chefs hands.. Your allergies are the only thing taken into consideration.. Restaurant from the outside: First course: A fried shish kabob with a bittergreen salad.. Zuchini, potato, squash, and a fish cake.. The fish cake was extremely small, but excellent.. I really like the amount of green beans they put in the cake.. Very salty.. One of the better fish cakes I have had.. Would have preferred several of them and not have missed the fried veggi stick.. Course 2: Toasted coconut with two tiny specks of thai chilis served on a beetlenut leaf accompanied by a coconut soy sauce chutney.. This was really good.. Loved the texture of the toasted coconut, as well as the contrast of the two coconut flavors and the heat of the peppers.. Plus I always think its fun when you interact with the food.. Course 3: Shrimp Dumpling in Sweet and Sour Sauce.. Hmm, definately think I had one of these somewhere before.. It wasnt the best dumpling I have had and it wasnt the worst.. I would say it would rank next to a decent chinese place. I have had better sweet and sour sauce out of a packets. Course 4 : Seabass with Rubarb.. I dont even think my camera liked this dish.. Seabass cooked ok, flavors werent too impressive., The rubarb was ok.. Had the taste and texture of dried apricots.. Dish was boring and very fogetable.. Course 5: Pad Thai with two shrimp: I dont really order Pad Thai too much, but this was a good. Liked the freshness of the sprouts. Liked how all the parts came seperate and then you were to mix them. The shrimp was overcooked Course 6: Pork salad with Stick Rice.. Utterly useless dish.. The sticky rice was ok.. The pork salad was tasteless. We had asked for hot and not one dish was remotely spicey.. This dish was just so boring. At this point when you are sitting in a restaurant and wishing you were sitting home eating your girlfriends larb or thai food, its not a good sign.. No matter how great her thai food is.. But wow look at the tomato flower.. That certainly makes up for how mediocre the food is.. Course 7 8 9 were served family style.. They were all brought out at once.. First was lobster and scallop with sweet and sour sauce.. This was horrific.. The scallop and lobster were cooked to death.. The meats were mushy and if I wasnt told what the meat was, I wouldnt have been able to tell what i was eating.. It was the worst prepared scallop or lobster I have ever eaten.. And i have been to Red Lobster, I have been to seafood buffets, I have been places where i shouldnt have ordered seafood.. This place was the out right worst.. Course 8: Massaman Beef.. The beef was over stewed, I get better cuts from my butcher.. Liked the coconut swirl.. I would compare this dish to the Massaman being served at every mid level Thai restaurant from here to New York to Montanna.. Course 9: Eggplant something or other.. Eh this too was boring.. Not too impressed with the carrot flower either.. They make the same flowers at the chinese buffet by my old house in Jersey.. I would much rather them concentrate on doing something interesting with the eggplant i was eating.. Desserts Very good Lychee sorbet great.. Strawberry sauce and some g-d awful cookie.. To finish the very nicely brought me out a chocolate birthday cake with candle.. I still feel cheated by this place.. Nothing warrants the price.. I could see if the ingrediants were expensive, or the meal was delicious or intricate.. But that was not the case. This place ranks among the less favorite dining experiences food wise I have ever had.. First because of the let down, second because it was so overpriced.. But luckily i was celebrating my birthday with my girlfriend so the night was perfect.. From the horrible seating to that hostpital cafeteria birthday cake..

Thank you.. My girl flew in to celebrate my birthday which is really today...Tonight is most likely our last night in Chicago and am going to Alinea... Next trip in September I will definately take your suggestions.. Thanks everyone.

So I went to Arun's tonight.. Before I go into my review with pictures I just wanted to stop anyone who might think about going there.. The place absolutely sucks.. Its expensive, the staff is horrible, seating the only four tables in a multiroomed restaurant in a square in the most narrow section.. Unfortunately I was able to hear and see all that took place in tiny alloted space so I saw all the meals were identical.. It wasn't even the choice of dishes but the meat and seafood were poorly cooked... This place is shamefull...
-
Oy veh.. I havent read the Aruns post in awhile and am going here tonight to celebrate my birthday... Should i change my reservation.. I too am a big sri fan and wanted the ultimate thai experience.. Where should i go instead

Thanks for the good words Rachel.. I must tell you however, I am a big fan of the shoefly pie.. I am Half Penn Dutch and it has been a staple on my mothers table.. When done correctly, i.e by my mother or grandmother it is an awesome thing..

For the ultimate of Fry loaded sandwhiches you need to hit Daffy's Deli in Newark, DE. I reccomend 'Da Bomb' which included buffalo style chicken fingers, mozerella sticks, french fries, hot peppers, hot sauce, blue cheese dressing, and melted cheese on top. Wow, all that sandwhich and not a vegetable to be seen (unless you count the hot peppers, which I don't, they are more a neccessity of life than a vegetable). Hey, if one of your road trips ever brings you through DE look me up, I have to salute someone like you with a couple rounds of drinks. ←

Thats it.... Get the kids an account to Egullet.. Tell them I want pictures and a full review of dads meal..

Yeh.. There is something about the bag that is very eye catching.. I would call it retro-foreign .. But its just cool to see that they are using a charcoal grill.. In most advertisements when they have someone grilling they are using propane.. I hate propane and often wonder how could a company want to stand behind the easier and inferior way of doing things? But then i realize I am out of my mind and I take my medication.. Anyway, I have never seen that brand before, its just a great little picture they have on the bag..

I looked up some places in Lexington.. Sweet Magnolia's looks pretty good.. And listed under fine dining you have .. Sheridan Livery Inn.. Its says"Fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy a wide variety of your favorite American cuisine; steaks, poultry, and seafood delivered fresh daily. Dine inside or out on the adjoining cafe or enjoy a drink at the lounge. " These are the places i would expect.. edit to add. Wilson Walker House "1820 classical revival town house. Featured in Travel and Leisure Magazine as "one of the best restaurants in Virginia." Creative American cuisine with regional influences. Children's menu, daily specials, and casual dress. 4 beautifully restored banquet rooms. Reservations requested. Open 11:30AM-2:30PM 5:30PM-9PM. "

I understand what you are asking in terms of Fine Dining in small towns.. Small towns certianly do have nice restaurants, but most of them are offered in terms of either steak or local fair.. I wouldnt expect to eat at a great Italian or French place in a small town, not that they dont exist.. I would more expect to eat at place that serves upscale local American cuisine.. Wether it be game or steak or fish.. I have found that Italian or Chinese in a small town is certain disappointment..

1)We picked the places we hit through a combination of Road Food Website, friends, Chowhound, Egullet, City Search and just comming upon a place. The Indian Taco Place,The Indian Reservation Elk Burger, Walkers, Real Chili, State Street Brats, Sir Scotts Oasis, PA Macaroni Co, Jimmy's,Enrico Biscotti, Beto's 24 Hour Taco, Culvers Butter Burger, Nancy Pasty, Johns, Grumpy Jacks BBQ, and Bobs Family Dining were all not planned.. So the majority of the places we ate at were not planned.. Lems and Leons in Chicago, IL Pizzaioli were from Egullet.. Leons and Kopps ice cream was from RoadFood, as well as Waldorf A Story and Matts.. We start out on these trips with a desire to learn about different regions which includes there food.. So we refuse to eat at any non local chains.. 2)Just in terms of eating Wisco despite there horrible drivers , Milwaukee seemed like an amazing place.. RoadFood had suggested German Places that looked awesome, butter burger places, a couple of good deli's, and of course re-hit and find new places.. So did Madison with lots of ethnic cuisine and just the fact that they service college kids means there will some good cheap eats.. Chicago I am leaving for in a couple of days so I know I am going to hit some awesome places there everytime i go.. I am looking forward to Alinea this trip..Salt Lake City we didnt have the time to give a fair chance.. My cousin is distraught I didnt try this burger place that puts pastrami on top of a burger.. Also we were going to go to the Pink Iguanna? i think, but we arrived so late.. So Salt Lake we need to revisit.. Minn We were too south on, so we didnt have the chance to see any of the lakes or visit any of the cities.. I would love to go back there.. But I think i will be in northern Minn in August on my next trip.. South Dakota I reall think Grumpy Jack has a vision in terms of BBQ and I hope he can reach it..Montanna I wish I had more time there.. There is a place is Butte that had a porkchop sandwich I wanted to eat but didnt have the strength.. And also would love to see more steakhouses like the one I went to Sir Scott Oasis.. 2a) But in terms of just visiting the states to hang out, I would happily return to any of the places. I really fell in love with Montanna, its just so pretty.. Like i said in my post, I be happy anywhere in America and would love to go back to any place I have visited here.. Its all so different but remarkable homey at the same time..

Ahh geeze.. I walked in there and wasnt too impressed.. I looked at the grill and just saw pre-sliced meats sitting in a cooler by the grill.. They were like pushing corned beef.. I passed the place up.. I know for next time.,.

I am so glad you read it.. There were no fancy garnishes on these plates.. Just straight forward great food.
