  1. Great photographs - How come I miss these events just about when I leave town :)
  2. Have some pub food Seriously it is an experience that you may not find in Hawaii. Can you (or someone) recommend one? And if I don't drink beer, should I go anyway? -Emily Wenlock Arms and Lamb & Flag are the two that come to mind. I do not know the exact address, but I manage to go there through 'rote. Maybe some locals could chime in.
  3. What ever you do - Do enjoy Costa Brava - A beuatiful region and very nice and passionate people. Nice beaches....

Never saw a 60's HKG Bar [too young to drink then]; but you could order apps in most bars in Queens Rd or infamous Lockhart whenever I was in HKG

It is not about food no ? Apart from trophies, and rent-by-the-hour; it is a place the R&F can take someone out without making the gossip columns no ? Or am I wrong ? Escaping from the wife and kids in CT

Diwali be gone Next big feast related event is Bakri-Id (Feast of the Sacrifice) First week of Feburary which should be mutton related....
  9. Pusan has distinct cuisine (or so my untrained palette thinks) It always helps going with locals to feast like rituals, which involve lots of drinking
  10. Getting late into this conversation: ecr has given you the jist of things, I'd just put a slightly different perspective - Open air dining - around Sangri-La Hotel just take a look at the stalls, see what catches your fancy and chow-away. Since I deduce that you ar not travelling solo, I'd not recommend to dine/drink at Sukhumvit Soi 4 or 22 Another place is Makkasan Rd (very close by to all major hotels) where a few value-laden restaurants are to be found.

    Mantra in Jakarta

Wonderful photographs - I wanted to hang out in JKT but have not had an opportunity. Please do post often and frequently about food in Indonesia - Who knows some of us might burn some miles and do a detour or swing an Asia-Pass
  12. IMNHO, There is no Saturday Lunch - It's a sorry marriage between brunch and lame weekday lunch. I've always avoided non-hotel linked restaurants - Here is why - Hotel based restaurants tend to be sensitive to the nuances of the hotel guests who may or maynot be jetlagged and so not just serve straight-fare Brunch menu [i could go on and on but I'm lazy to type on some of the issues] Savoy, Firenze does not do Brunch; Monna Lisa Firenze does neither; In NYC, it is such a confused mixed bag that Its like expalinig distributed-redundant-self-healing-optical networks In New Orleans Intercontinental they have a very good weekend Buffet Brunch, skirts the issue of Lunch by offering a spread equivalent to what we had at Copacabana Palace, Sol Melia Costa Rica and Singapore ..... [Did I just praise a NA hotel to ones outside ?? ] FG: You did say Saturday Lunch, Right ??? Not Brunch

Over this past snow weekend; We managed to make another run to Amma (jee I feel like a rum-runner :) ) and despite the weather, it was reasonablly filled - We did not have anything new -- Bad weather calls for straight-laced ordering I still think Salmon & Patri-ni-machi (OK, I'm from Mumbai and have a soft spot for parsi food :) )
  14. Sorry I cannot help you here. My last trip to Kolkatta was over 25 years ago.

    Amma

Anil, the members of eGullet have been champions of Amma. Many, many thanks to each of you for your support and patient hearing....Could not ask for a better family of eGulleteers. Would you mind sharing what these dishes are?? Maybe we ought to keep the discussion in the NY forum. Since that thread is the more active one. I am very curious now.... wondering what your favorite dishes at Amma are... ones that you are thinking in this instance..... And thanks for this huge compliment. This is what I had said in October - While Parta ni Machi is also very good.
  19. Great Mutton & Potato curries can be had in Carribean. Mostly a variations from the mother country by the generations of indians who have subtly changed the spices and cooking methods. Jamaicans,Trinidadians,Guyanese. The good news i -- All can be had in NYC - Bad news is that one has to travel the outer boroughs to find these gems

    Amma

Yes, as I mentioned there and firmly believe that one or two dishes in Amma will outshine to become as well known as Motimahal's (Delhi) butter chicken It might even become sublime in its satisation of the hungry.

There goes the neighborhood The good thing is that it seats only 40; bad news is that walk-in lunch and probably short-notice dinner reservations go out the window
  22. Now what kind of entertainment did our former mayor try to ban from NYC Now what kind of entertainment is only available in joisey you be the judge !!!!!!!

    The Mojito

Slowly but steadily "mojitos" have risen to the top of the "cool-ness" chain in NYC. So has the density of "eye candy" quotient increased in the neuvo-latino and cuban bar/restaurants. Just completed a informal survey of the mojito scene in the city -- Top of the heap is Son Cubano - with mojitos with mango flavor ? Then there is Fusion with vanilla flavored rum in the drink - Cafe Frida has cane juice -- Cuba Libre the weakest alcohol content. Please add to your mojito discoveries here I'll add more observations later.
