Sorry ! A day late and a euro short -- Never had a chance to check your posting. Anyway AMS is easier and inexpensive for me to get to than the west Coast Hey !! What's with "Sichuan Food" ??? More later .......
-
Please I missed the 'Grimes' piece - So did I miss the 'tragedy of the world Series too' -- Clue me in
-
I wrote my impressions of Amma, and a week later leave town for AMS -- Holy Macro -- A whole slew of postings... Guess I said the same thing, we agree - but, I eat in pickings -- My appetite is not something one would find in size in the 'mid-west' . I have to take another bunch to 'Amma' before I say more

Chocolate Burfee ? Best of both worlds

That's why I said second date No competition with the views

No it's more fun on the edges - maybe we should symbolically link this topic to New Englans and Heartland Groups How about Boston Beans to begin with and Chicago Dogs during the 7th inning commercial break. Personally I want this series over before I fly to AMS (NYY in 4)

ouch!! harboring a bit of bitterness there? when i went to tufts in the early 90s, both medford and slummerville were serious shithole townie neighborhoods. but at a bar a few weeks ago i started talking to a girl that had just graduated and she was just raving about how nice sommerville has become and how hip it is. that's gentrification for ya. Sheesh !!! Kiddos I'm from the time Big Dig was just a concept, White was the mayor, bridges were measured in Smoots and we hacked the Harvard-Yale game

Twenty Bleeping pages about What ????? Could we just create another category and have this as a sub-group like France and just rename this thread as Elyse's-carnivorous-Fan Club If this proposition does pass egullet's board of election/Selection (Hey If Arnold can become Gv'nor, my Prop. can also pass through too no ? ) I'll promise to vote for W [Now ducking for cover and preparing to escape to AMS for rijstaffel ]

After having eaten at Amma more than a couple of times in the past two weeks - I have to reluctantly say - Salmon Malabar was amongst the very ... [use your own superlatives ] except for the added dollop of dosa-style-potato-filling sides. In India, many places are known for one or two entrees, which are their signature dishes e.g Motimahal's Butter Chicken; Sweet's Corner's Chole Bhature, Bade Mian's Boti-Kebabs -- This could be Amma's IT thing IMHO. Three Samosa Appetisers The Chutneys were heavenly. but a Punj can not really accept a bong-style singaras called samosas - OK Mango martini ??, Mango Cosmo, Rose Lassi all very delicious and inviting. Tasting Menu - A Lassi followed by the non-vegetarian tasting menu is a formula for trouble (At least for my size and appetite, those who have seen me know I cannot eat big or many macho portions ) Imagine just taking a bite from the piece of lamb and just a spoon of mango cheesecake and reluctantly letting it all go waste Butter Chicken was rich and tad off the mark (But hey ! as a kid I had one made by Nehru's travelling personal chef, as well as at MotiMahal and India House in LON, So I'm being more discerning) Patra ni Maachi made in the same style and substance as in now defunct Pondicherry Bhelpuri - Even though it was good, I'll take Auntie servings @ Dimple for now, thankyou, I ate much more than I want to talk about, but hey I dragged folks from 68th-69th& Park Ave. just for a lunch break the other day without having a negative flaq More as I work through the menu [bTW the material the menu is printed on is the same material as a wedding invitation I received around the same time... hmmmm...]

NYC Amma A Lot has been said about this place because of our good friend Suvir Unbeknown to moi (contrary to Suvir''s promise about an advanced tasting to an un-named restaurant opening ) we got out a tad late out of Mica Bar (not my hangout) and my locals of the neighborhood suggested eating at the curry house next door (a euphemism that many Brits use to catagorize Indian rest.) On seeing the menu, my friends were surprised to see their standard items missing -- According to the waitperson "Saar, Everything has changed ...." The food was ................ Hmmm ???? (Had I tasted at a hidden gem in this part of town ?) 36 hours later .... egullet post's Gail's take on it with a URL - My comment was SOG Subsequently, I hauled my old behind and dragged friends and family to Amma Amma Is up there amongst the desi restaurants I have eaten. [Details on Amma I'll post elsewhere]

When you put everything in perspective, it is enjoyable - Good for a second date

What do you want to spend ? My last three trips I have settled on Hotel Marmara in Taxsim Sq. (an Insider track to comp. ugrades facing Bosphorous ??? I can't give that up can I ?) If you are a bagpacker/pensionnes type then go to Itskal Caddessi (sp?) and negotiate the room rates with the many such places....

I second Suzanne's suggestion - Get out of the Midtown West because those restaurants will be focusing on the pre-theatre crowd. But if you must - Bello - 56th & 10th.
-
But Of!Course Move to Clinton - Neither UWS, nor Chelsea. Walk to Lincoln Center/Broadway/Central Park
-
Anu - How did Bao Noodles serve you cocktails ? They have as of yet not received their Liquor License. We were refused any alcoholic drink

A very nice article -

Did you ever write a trip report someplace or somewhere on your three week in 'nam ? I'm looking for an opportunity to go there BTW, a very well written review.

Look here and also check this out I have used it in India/Turkey/EU/South America in the past. You might want to invest in this I have and has saved half-a-day worth of jet lag.

For what appliance ? Laptop/Hairdryer/Electric shaver should have 110~220V 50~60H built-in. To be on the safe side get a universal plug from Sharper-Image or look around port.com. I thought you'll were in .IT by now ?

That and then some. Till I bring all the folks who I care about (in small groups), to taste @ Amma, I'll refrain from commenting
