Here's an alternative: Don't change the venue, change the menu (hey...that rhymes!) We could still go to Blue Smoke, but not eat burgers. I haven't been there yet and it seemed a bit of a shame to go to a 'barbecue' place and eat hamburgers.

I've been to La Cabana and can vouch for it's goodness. Didn't make it there this trip, but will re-visit in the future. My interest in BG was to taste what Fenniger and Milliken's food tasted like. I suppose Sushi Roku and Chinois are both scenes, but I went for the food. Wasn't disappointed.

I stopped in the Border Grille for a look around while in the neighborhood. Looked like a fun place for a group, as Tommy said, but not that special. So I forwent Mexican this visit. I did have very good meals at Sushi Roku and Chinois on Main.

I'm in LA (Venice) for a few days around Thanksgiving. Is Border Grill in Santa Monica worth a visit, or is it hype and to be seen place? Just curious. Menu seems good. thanks (also hope to make it to Langers for pastrami if I venture downtown).

Greetings from California. Nice pictures. Too bad it was less than 100% sucessful evening, but you all did get to meet Tarka and have fun and conversation, so that's good. No burgers yet this trip (good Sushi at Sushi Roku last night). Tonight it's beverages and seafood at Gladstones along the ocean. Tomorrow we eat the bird. I'm in for the 13tn, BTW.

Were you replying to me or Jamie? I think Jamie was refering to a plan of his for next week. I went to Daisy May's last month. Wrote about it somewhere but can't find it. Oh yeah - it's in what did you have for lunch thread. Anyway, I had just had lunch at Delta Grill on 46th and 9th. Walked to Daisy May, got pulled pork sandwich and KC ribs and beans. Took 2 days just to eat the ribs. Sandwich would have been better had I ate it sooner. {still have trouble with color not in crayon form}

If it's open then, you can stop across the street and get barbecue at Daisy Mays to keep you sustained between BC on Tuesday and Thanksgiving on Thursday. Have fun.

I won't be able to attend the event on the 25th. I'm flying that morning to California to visit my step-daughter. That means it will be only 4 o'clock when you are dining. I'll be getting drooled on by my step-puppy, Luigi the bulldog edit: he's a bulldog, not a bullgog

Not enough time to practice or play with ferrets? Definitely working too hard. Any way, you're only talking about the next 11 months. So you're not withdrawn, just on long term leave. We'll keep a seat warm for you.

Your average NY City dweller, does the same. However we have developed additional immunity by having travelled via the subway. I get a flu shot every year, but I think I stay healthy because of my mass transit antibodies.

I went to Luchows on 13-14th sometime during the early 70's. They had an annual venison festival. It was a group outing with classmates from Cooper Union, so it was just a 6 block walk. I remember consuming many beers and consequently remember little else. Except the roving Oompah band. That was unforgettable.

It is possible that the best burger in NYC, if that is still our quest, may be offered in a froofie place, cost more than ten bucks, and even be liked by Ms. Ray. They can be cooked in less than 30 minutes, fit well with a $40/day budget, and with ketchup or tomato match her red and black wardrode. Second opinions are almost always good. --mh

We discussed irreproducible results at our booth during Burger Club last night. Alas I had just thrown away the food issue during my drastic room clean up during the previous week. Fortunately , the Annals of Improbable Research are still extant. Here's their website. You can sign up for an electronic newsletter.

I'm a tough grader it seems when it comes to burgers if not so with candy. The burger itself was really ok, with a good broil char flavor outside and good meat taste inside. Greasy rather than juicy which is a negative for me. Eh bun, but that's not the burger, is it? Good value at $4.50, but I had two of them. Great beer value. Fries nothing special. Interesting place. Wouldn't have guessed that a spot like that exists in the Parker M. Great music. I like my burger on a plate and a fork for my fries, but this is a picnic lodge inside a fancy hotel. Now as to the candy. Yes it was intense. Sort of like a super salt and pepper fizzy tablet. No reason for me to have eaten it. But it wasn't as disgusting as black liquourice. Just call me 'he who doesn't spit' or 'he who eats annything.' Freak works too. Susan, did HWOE taste one of them? Glad we finished in time to catch the tail end of the total part of the lunar eclipse. Good to see the club, new and old.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for a while and I've brought it up in previous threads. I don't think anyone's suggested a viable solution or reason. Even having a person to run to Starbucks every hour for coffee to serve the restaurant patrons would be an improvement over what is served in many ecpensive restaurants. Cleaning the coffeemaker more frequently too would help. I agree with the french press comment. One of my best after dinner coffees was served to me that way in Charleston, SC. But I've basically given up and now I usually order a cappuchino or a glass of port. --mh

Eureka! The synapses lined up as I was taking a shower. As Rachel suggested, I was thinking of a different place. I was picturing March rather than Craft. So perhaps I remember rooms, just not names.

I'm back in! The "warden" has granted me an evening pass because I cleaned up my room. Organized and filed all my "important" papers that have been piling up since 1990. See you at 6. --mh

You all are probably correct. Everyone, please regard anything I report about that is more than 2 weeks ago at your own risk! --mh

Steven I was only there once and it was in May, but I'm pretty sure that one enters the place at street level, then there is a short corridor, then a dining area, then stairs down to another dining area. I could be remembering it all wrong. I need help from a more recent visitor. But if it wasn't downstairs, then it was the room farthest from the entrance. --mh

I will pieticipate. I made a pie once in 1989. It was good. I'll make a fresh one for the pot-luck. Filling TBD.
