    Burger Club

I'm not in for this one. I regret not being able to meet Mr. Cutlets or bloviatrix and not seeing the rest of the gang. I'm off to California from 11/25 thru 12/2; maybe something will happen before then. Meanwhile I will learn to make a pie for January. --mh

    Craft

We had a very nice dinner at Craft for our anniversary. We sat downstairs and it was very comfortable. When going back upstairs to leave after dinner, I was happy that we were downstairs to dine. -mh

I've heard a bit about In N Out Burgers here on eGullet. I tend to avoid all fast food places, but maybe I'll give this a try. James Beach in Venice makes a good burger. --mh

I'm on the fence for this Saturday, but I will tip off one way or the other shortly. I may have been drafted into painting the new den already. As for 11/28, I will be in California. Sorry I will miss Tarka and the rest of the BC gang. Perhaps I'll find a worthy LA burger.
  5. I'll be spending Thanksgiving in California (Venice) with my wife and stepdaughter. Wife is leaving the 15th; by the time I arrive on the 25th, both will be glad to see me. Luigi the bulldog will also be there; he loves a party. Menu will be traditional turkey and things for the most part. Tough to cook that just for 3 plus a dog, might just need turkey parts. --mh
  6. There was a time (during my childhood) when the boundaries of Washington Heights were 155th St and Dyckman Street, with Inwood north to Spuyten Duyvil. That made some geographic sense, as a steep uphill starts around 155th (maybe lower) and the northern edges of Fort George Hill end at Dyckman. I haven't lived there since 1981, so any restaurant knowledge I had is out of date. When I was a kid there were soda fountain/ice cream parlours every so often along Broadway. But we never ate out or even had take out when I was growing up. And there was nowhere worth eating in the heights in my late 20's (1977-81). So this post serves no value to the topic execpt maybe geographical. Perhaps as people list current restaurantsites, I can tell you what used to be there. --mark

E = B x C ^ 2 was placed on another wall, but wasn't photographed. I haven't been to All State in years. That block of 72nd street is like a neighborhood to itself. Different now without Royale Bakery. Essen deli/buther still there. Lots of other restaurants open and close frequently, or jump from one side of the street to the other. --mh
  9. For the August version of this topic click here. We like to get the paper / plastic combo because the paper stiffens up the bags in the shopping cart we push around the streets of NYC (no car). The plastic provides either rain protection, handles to carry the paper with, and disposal containers for cat litter clumps. I give the extras to a friend who walks dogs. They still know how to pack bags at Fairway, though it doesn't hurt to put the heavy items at the front of the belt so they end up in the bottom of the bag. --mh

I think that might have been the case today. The staff were willing to please, and may have rushed a few out of the kitchen a bit to serve all close to the same time. I think it was ~20 minutes from order to service, but we don't know whether the kitchen cooked all of them at once and we forgot to tell them to bring them out as they were done. --mh

    Burger Club

Another good afternoon with the Club. I was another whose medium-rare order came quite on the rare side. I think that's why the texture was so mushy - undercooked meat. I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer pickle spears to the TOJ's thin slices (but I eat pickles off the burger). Yes, good fries. Burger size was better (smaller than Molly's). Overall memory - mushy center. Wonder bread bun couldn't stand up to the juice, but then it's not about the bun, right? Chocolate Bar looked delicious, but I was over the calorie limit. Next time. Good to get to the West Village again and look around. I also liked the crayons. Fresh, without that annoying waxy taste. Orange was my favorite. I left an E = B C squared on the wall. --mark
  13. Knorr's used to make a packaged, powdered cold fruit soup mix. I liked that as a kid, but they don't make it anymore. -mh
  14. Seconding the comments that most of apple season is over. But, there are nice pick your own orchards around near Warwick, NY (a little north of the NY/NJ border - about 45-50 miles from NYC. You can enjoy the fall foliage and also pick pumpkins. just google for warwick apple orchards --mh

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

I'm supposed to be on a diet too, but I blew it off today. Met friends for lunch at Delta Grill on 46th and 9th. Had share of fried okra, red beans and rice - with andouilie sausage and a chicken breast, and two beers. My friend gave me half his muffeletta which he couldn't finish to take home. Since I was so close, I went to 46th and 11th and got a pulled pork sandwich, Kansas City ribs, and a large side of beans from Daisy May's. Now we have lunches and dinners for 2 more days. So much for blood sugar control this week. I should be recovered for Burger Club on Saturday

  17. Even if a city dweller could bring a shopping wagon home, there's no place to put it. Even the folding carts of apartment dwellers are difficult to store. NY'ers seem to specialize in milk carton theft (not me of course). They store anything in them except milk. However, sitting on one doing nothing can result in a ticket for loitering. --mh

Another place that has been mentioned more than once: City Hall. BTW, we cooked our own home made burgers this weekend on an old hibachi fired with wood up in the mountains. Put Molly's to shame, but there is nothing left to share with the club. I would nay on MSorely's and Old Town, not because they're not good, but because they're not better than Mollys. I think I reported on Old Town a hundred or two posts back. --mh

Ah, McSorely's. The "official" tavern of my alma mater, Cooper Union. (the last day of fall semester was called McSorely's Day. I can still smell the oder of beer, sawdust, and mustard when I think about it. We hardly ever ordered hamburgers there; usually went for cheese plates or ham and cheese sandwiches when we were students (1970-74). And back then two mugs were 50 cents or a buck. A couple years later it became a weekend handout for NJ teenagers and lost some of its appeal. Weekdays at lunchtime are still good. --mh

Nice to meat meet the familiar and new faces today. Agreeing with much of above, Molly's burger was a good pub burger, though undoubtedly not the best burger in New York. It was a good value at 7 bucks, it was big (9 ounces), it was made with good meat. The plate was nicely dressed with fresh lettuce, ordinary tomato, 2 slices of raw onion, and good pickle - better dressed than some other burger places. Yes, it needed salt. I hadn't been to Molly's before, but would go back if in the neighborhood and thirsty or hungry. --mh

I replied to your PM (is that an RPM?), Elyse. I will be there tomorrow solo. BTW, I peeked in the window of Cafe Luxemburg today. Good crowd for lunch. The Luxemburger is $14.00, add $1.00 for cheese or bacon. --mh
  23. I don't quite get the point of the article. Are you saying that we (foodie-like people) don't need the false comfort or false karass of a label and we should just seek out our culinary satisfaction for our own sakes? I can agree with that, but many people do seem to have a pack instinct. (eGullet Burger Club excluded of course ). Or do you just want a better nickname. Or do you not like people who wear tee-shirts, baseball caps and drive Lexii? --mh
